PULLOUT TEST REPORT FOR

CONSTRUCTION OF ROAD SLOPE
PROTECTION STRUCTURE AT SPECIFIC
LOCATIONS ALONG JCT. BANCAL-LEON
ANTIQUE BDRY.RD (S00114PN)
K041+593.00-K041+622.27

CONTRACT ID NO. 22GI0036

1. INTRODUCTION
This report presents the results of the pullout test conducted for the CONSTRUCTION OF
ROAD SLOPE PROTECTION STRUCTURE AT SPECIFIC LOCATIONS ALONG JCT.
BANCAL- LEON ANTIQUE BDRY. RD (S00114PN) K041+593.00-K041+622.27.
To ensure Quality Control & Assurance of the installed slope protection system, a Proof Pull
Test is required as detailed in Department Order 32 Series of 2019 on Item 522 – Active and
Passive Protection Systems for Unstable Slope. The proof pull test is performed for a selected
set of installed soil nails/anchors for the verification of their anchoring strength to meet the
required performance.

2.1 Reference Standard

The reference standard followed is the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal

Highway Administration’s Soil Nail Walls Reference Manual under publication FHWA-
NHI-14-007. The document presents information on the analysis, design, and
construction of permanent ground anchors and soil nails in highway applications.
The purpose of the permanent ground anchors is to contribute to the stability of the
earth resisting system mainly through tension as a result of the deformation of the
retained soil or weathered rock mass. Load transfer to and from the surrounding ground
develops through shear stresses acting along the grout interface of the soil nail. As the
reinforced-soil block deforms, shear stresses develop at the grout-ground interface.
Because the retained soil deforms toward the excavation, anchors undergo extension
resulting in axial tensile forces in the tendon. The axial tensile load in the tendon
increases from the anchor head to a maximum value; then decreases as the anchor
transfers load to the surrounding ground. The tensile resistance of the tendon and the
pull-out resistance of the anchor are the main resisting mechanisms.

2.2 Pullout Resistance

August 14, 2023

The pullout resistance of a soil nail is a quantity of fundamental importance in the design
of soil nail walls. Calculation of the pullout resistance of each soil nail is based on the
length of nail extending behind the potential slip surface under analysis, the diameter of
the grout body surrounding the tendon, and the bond strength of the soil-to-grout
interface.
The bond strength (qu) is the (ultimate) shear strength of the soil-to-grout interface.
Factors affecting the bond strength include the conditions of the ground around soil nails
(e.g., soil type and soil overburden stress) and installation methods (drilling, drill hole
cleaning, grouting procedure, and grout characteristics).
Values of bond strength have been reported in the literature for drilled and gravity-
grouted soil nails installed in various types of soils/rocks and for different drilling methods.
Table 1 includes ranges of presumptive bond strength (i.e., nominal values) for various
combinations of soil and drilling methods. For the bond strength used in this report, it is
assumed to be SANDY GRAVEL. A bond strength of 25 psi or 172.37 kPa was used in
the calculation of proof pull test.
The ultimate pullout resistance of soil nail (r PO) is equal to the bond strength multiplied by
the perimeter of the bond zone.
Table 1. Estimated Bond Strength for Soil Nails in Coarse-Grained Soils
(Modified after Elias and Juran 1991)

2.3 Details of Proof Test

Proof tests are single-cycle tests in which the load is applied in increments to a maximum
proof test load (PTL).

The maximum load in the proof test is calculated using the following equation:

PTL [1]
= LB VT x rPO x 0.75

where:
rpo is the nominal pullout resistance of soil nail per unit length
LBPT is the bonded length during proof pull test

Meanwhile the nominal pullout resistance per unit length of the soil nail is calculated by
Equation 2:

rPO = x qU x DDH x 0.75 [2]

where:
qu is the bond strength
DDH is the diameter of the drill hole

The maximum bond length during verification test is calculated by:

[3]

where:
At is the cross-sectional area of the tendons
fy is the ultimate tensile strength of the tendons
CRTY is the reduction coefficient of mild grade steel equivalent to 0.9

The properties of the soil nail are based on 32mm deformed steel bars conforming to the
specifications detailed in ASTM A615M for Grade 60 Bars (Tensile Strength and Yield
Strength).

*Table taken from ASTM A615-M – Standard Specification for Deformed and Plain Carbon-
Steel Bars for Concrete Reinforcement
The reduction coefficient for mild-grade steel (Grade 60) is 0.9.
The acceptance criterion required that no pullout occurs at loads less than 1.0 PTL.

3. EQUIPMENT
DO 32 Series of 2019 states that the contractor shall provide all necessary resources
including all torque wrenches, jacks, gauges, reaction frame, pump, load cell, bearing plates,
and other equipment required to carry out the pull test from the anchor bolts/soil nails
specified.
4. TEST RESULTS
PROOF TEST LOAD CALCULATION
FORMULA:
PTL = L B PT x r PO x 0.75
Ɏ
rPO = x qU x DDH
L B PTMAX = At x fy x CRTY
r PO x 0.75
PTL - PROOF TEST LOAD
L B PT - BONDED LENGTH DURING PROOF TEST
rPO - NOMINAL PULLOUT RESISTANCE (PER UNIT LENGTH) OF SOIL NAIL
qU - BOND STRENGTH
DDH - DRILL HOLE DIAMETER
L B PTMAX - MAXIMUM BONDED LENGTH DURING PULL TEST
At - CROSS SECTIONAL AREA OF THE TEST TENDONS
fy - YIELD STRENGTH OF TEST TENDON
CRTY - REDUCTION COEFFICIENT OF MILD - GRADE STEEL = 0.9
DBAR - TENDON DIAMETER
GIVEN PARAMETERS:
BONDSTRENGTH, qU = 172.37 kPa
DRILL HOLE DRIAMETER, DDH = 60 mm or 2.36 in
TENDON DIAMETER, DBAR = 32 mm or 1.26 in
BAR YIELD STRENGTH = 60000 psi or 413.69 MPa
BAR LENGTH = 6000 mm
= 236.22 in or 19.69 ft

CALCULATIONS:
DETERMINATION OF NOMINAL PULLOUT RESISTANCE OF SOIL NAILS
rPO = x qU x DDH x 0.75

rPO = 3.14 x 172.37 x 60.00 x 0.75

rPO = 24.37 kN/m
DETERMINATION OF MAXIMUM BOND LENGTH LB PTMAX = At x fy x CRTY
rPO x 0.75

L B PTMAX = 804.25 x 413.69 x 0.9

24.37 x 0.75
L B PTMAX = 16.38 m (if L BPTMAX is less than 3.05m, use L BPTMAX = 3.05m)
L B PTMAX > 3.05
L B PT = 6.00 m
DETERMINATION OF VERIFICATION TEST LOAD
PTL = LB VT x rPO x 0.75

PTL = 6.00 x 24.36808 x 0.75

PTL = 109.66 kN

PROOF TEST LOAD CONVERSION TO PISTON READING

PISTON = 109.66 kN
READING 2025.61 psi
