TITLE : SIGNIFICANCE OF CHORAL COMPETITION AS A ROLE IN DEVELOPING CHORAL MUSIC EDUCATION FOR
UNIVERSITY CHOIRS
Problem Statement

This research is being conducted in seeking greater understanding of the choral competition as a role in developing choral music
education from a university choir perspective. There are many types of choir groups in different universities that have their own kind of
approach towards choral. Most of them are guided by professionals and talented people who usually have experiences in the choir field
and have a high target of achievement for their groups.

University choirs find the chance to expand their capabilities and to test their fluency through their participation in choral competition
where they are evaluated by a panel of judges and being graded based on different criteria such as how they interpret the repertoire, the
balancing in singing, techniques, etc. By entering these competitions, choir groups are able to verify their level of competency where
they evaluated and know where they stand, what to improve in sort of abilities among choirs around the world, especially in Malaysia.
Individuals in the choirs participate in these groups with the aim of improving their artistic abilities and skills, being in a social
environment and communicating with different individuals and exhibiting their joint works together. Admiration of group activities,
formation of common values, realization of individual and group goals, and enabling individual development and interaction contribute
to the increase of ties between the individuals forming the group and to the sense of belonging to the group. (Emel Funda TÜRKMEN, &
