Filter Tutorials

1. The specifications for a Butterworth LP filter are,

Pass band - 0-2 Mega-rad/sec

Maximum Pass Band attenuation less than or equal to 2 dB

Minimum stop band attenuation less than or equal to 60dB at stop band edge of 6
Mega-rad/sec

(a) Find n and c

(b) Write the magnitude of the transfer function.

(c) Determine the transfer function for the filter.

(d) Synthesize the filer as a passive filter with 1 ohm termination

(e) Scale the filter components for 1k termination.

2. The specifications for a Butterworth LP filter are,

Maximum pass band attenuation less than 1 dB at pass band edge of 2 MHz.

Maximum Pass Band attenuation more than or equal to 60 dB for stop band edge of 8 MHz

(a) Find n and c to satisfy the pass band edge characteristics exactly

(b) Write the magnitude of the transfer function.

(c) Determine the transfer function for the filter.

(d) Synthesize the filer as a passive filter with 1 ohm termination

(e) Scale the filter components for 1k termination.

3. Derive the general expression transfer function for a nth order Butterworth Filter for c=1. What
changes are to be made in the expression id c is not equal to 1.

4. Specifications of a band pass filter are as follows.

Pass band from w=20 k-rad/s to w=30 k rad/s having maximum attenuation of 2dB

Stop band for w less than or equal to 10 k-rad/s and w greater than 40 k-rad/s having a
minimum attenuation of 40 dB.

(a) Find the equivalent LPF specifications for the above filter.

(b) Find the transfer function for the specs in (a)
