SIMPLIFIED READING

MODULES TO ENHANCE THE

READING PERFORMANCE
LEVEL OF GRADE Vl
IN TUACA ELEMENTARY
SCHOOL

l. CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

Reading is the process of making and getting
meaning from printed word symbols. Unless a child is
equipped with the basic reading skills, he/she would
not be able to study independently and effectively.
However, there are various kinds of reading difficulties
being encountered by pupils because of several factors
that influence them in the acquisition of reading skills
like literal, inferential and critical.
This is evident in the recently conducted PHIL-IRI
Test where, out of 40 pupils from Grade Vl-Venus who
took the test, only 6 pupils or 15% fall under
Independent Level, 8 or 20% under Instructional Level
and 26 or 65%under Frustration Level.
Because of this prevailing scenario, this action
research that would determine the effectiveness of the
SIMPLIFIED READING MODULES is conceptualized.

ll. ACTION RESEARCH QUESTION

This study aims to determine the effect of the
SIMPLIFIED READING MODULES to the reading
performance of 26 Grade Vl pupils who belong to the
FRUSTRATION LEVEL. Specifically, it will seek answer to
this question.
1. How effective is the use of the SIMPLIFIED READING
MODULES to the reading performance of the 26 Grade
Vl pupils along with the least mastered reading skills?

lll. PROPOSED INNOVATION, INTERVENTION AND

STRATEGY
a. Title: SIMPLIFIED READING MODULES: AN
INTERVENTION TO ENHANCE THE READING
PERFORMANCE OF GRADE Vl-VENUS AT TUACA
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
b. Description:
The researcher will design SIMPLIFIED
READING MODULES of different reading skills.
This research will consider the reading abilities
and performance of the key respondents. The
researcher will design SIMPLIFIED READING MODULES
of different skills which are aligned to PHIL-IRI reading
passages to address the problem. Learners will be given
intensive reading activities and instructions.
They will be given more time to get engage in
their reading tasks/activities, and assessments will
follow to assess or monitor their reading progress.
c. Benefits:
This research will benefit the Grade Vl-Venus
of Basud Central School.
d. Mechanics:
This research will focus on intensive reading
activities of the respondents to be followed by constant
evaluation/assessments to monitor their reading
progress.

lV. ACTION RESEARCH METHODS

a. Participants and/or other Sources of Data and
Information
The participants to this study are the Grade Vl-
Venus of Basud Central School. They were identified
through the PHIL-IRI test recently conducted.
In the analysis of test result, only (6) six pupils or
15% of the class belong to INDEPENDENT LEVEL while
(8) eight or 20% belong to INSTRUCTIONAL LEVEL and
the rest which (26) or 65% of the class belong to
FRUSTRATION LEVEL.
b. Data Gathering Method
The researcher gathered the data through the
PHIL-IRI Assessment recently conducted. She will also
conduct survey and focus group discussion to other
pupils to validate the result
