BASIC CONCEPT OF RESISTANCE

SERIES AND PARALLEL CIRCUITS

WHAT IS EQUIVALENT RESISTANCE?

EXAMPLES AND CALCULATIONS

BASIC CONCEPT OF

RESISTANCE
is the measure of the amount of
current repulsion in a circuit. It uses
ohms (Ω) as its unit of
measurement.
WHAT IS

SERIES CIRCUIT
In a series circuit, resistors are
connected end-to-end, creating a
single path of current flow.
Current: same current flows through all resistors
Voltage: voltages in a series add up VAB=V1+V2+V3
WHAT IS

PARALLEL CIRCUIT
In a parallel circuit, resistors are
connected among common point

Current: Current splits into currents I1, I2, I3

I = I1+ I2+ I3
Voltage: Voltage drops across all three resistors are identical
VAB= V1= V2= V3
SERIES PARALLEL

VOLTAGE Veq = V1 + V2 + V3 .... Veq = V1 = V2 = V3 ..

CURRENT Ieq = I1 = I2 = I3 .... Ieq = I1 + I2 + I3

EQUIVALENT RESISTANCE
Equivalent Resistance is the simplified value that
represents the total resistance of a complex circuit.

SERIES CIRCUIT PARALLEL CIRCUIT

SERIES CIRCUIT V = V1 + V2 + V3
V = IR
V1 = IR1
V2 = IR2
V3 = IR3

putting the values of V1, V2 and V3

z

IR = IR1 + IR2 + IR3

IR = I (R1 + R2 + R3)
R = R1 + R2 +R3

Equivalent Resistance
Ieq = I1 + I2 + I3
PARALLEL CIRCUIT

From ohm 's law

I=V/R
I1 = V / R1
I2 = V / R2
I3 = V / R3
z

putting the values of I1, I2 and I3

V / R = V / R1 + V / R2 + V / R3
V / R = V [1 / R1 + 1 / R2 + 1 / R3]
1 / R = 1 / R1 + 1 / R2 + 1 / R3

Equivalent Resistance
