STE Department LAC Session on Understanding 21st Century Learners in

Adapting Classroom Strategies
February 23, 2023 @ 3:00 PM

The Paradigm Shift in Education about the difference in traditional and

evolving curriculum, instruction and environment is very important to understand
by the 21st century teachers.
Moreover, there are many observable changes from the way the past learners
learn and behave compare to the 21 st century learners. Some teachers provided
insight like learners from the old times are afraid to their teachers and they are
more respectful. In contrary, today’s generation of learners are daring, outspoken,
risk takers and outrageous. Hence, teachers from this session had a reflection that
they must be able to adapt on the different characteristics of the learners.
The teachers performed the Scavenger Hunt activity wherein they identified
the skills and preferences of their fellow teachers in any possible ways and as fast
as they could. Even in this activity it helped the teachers recognized that everyone
has multiple intelligences specially the learners as well.
In line with this understanding of the 21 st century learners, the teachers
planned to adapt classroom strategies suitable for the kind of learners today like
integration of differentiated instructions in the lesson delivery.
Therefore, the learners of this generation are unique and diverse. They are
characterized by being creative, communicator, collaborator, critical thinker, and
problem-solver. In order to cater the needs of these learners, teachers must possess
the five C’s (commitment, competence, creativity, compassion and character) to
nurture better the 21st century learners.
