DRILL ACTIVITY!
Directions: Answer the following questions on the space provided of your activity sheet.
Do it individually. (time limit: 3 minutes)
4.)
Directions: Answer the following questions on the activity sheet provided. Form a group
consist of 3 members and find the common difference to the following patterns. (time limit: 3
minutes)
Sequence
Is a function whose domain is the set of positive integers, usually a set of
positive consecutive integers starting with 1.
The function values a 1 , a2 , a3 , a4 , a 5 , … a n , …are called the terms of the
sequence.
Arithmetic Sequence
A sequence where every term after the first is obtained by adding a constant
called the common difference.
A sequence is arithmetic if each pair of consecutive terms differ by same
amount.
Formula:
a n=a1 + ( n−1 ) d
where:
a 1= first term of the arithmetic sequence
n = number of terms
a n = nth term of the arithmetic sequence
d = common difference
Example1: Given the sequence 15, 25, 35, 45, 55, ... Question: Does this sequence arithmetic?
If so, find the common difference and the next two terms.
Example2: Given the sequence 4, 8, 16, 32, … Question: Does this sequence arithmetic? If so,
find the common difference and the next two terms.
1.) Situation: There are 125 passengers in the first carriage, 150 passengers in the second
carriage and 175 in the third carriage and so on in an arithmetic sequence.
Problem: What’s the number of passengers in the fifth carriage?
2.) Situation: Given A car travels 300 meters the first minute, 420 meters the next
minute, and 540 meters in the third minute.
Problem: What’s the distance the car travels in 4 minutes?
3.) Situation: You visit the Grand Canyon and drop the penny off the edge of a cliff. The
distance the penny will fall is 16 feet on the first second, 48 feet the next second, 80 feet
the third second and so on and form an arithmetic sequence.
Problem: What is the distance the object will fall in 5 seconds?
ASSIGNMENT: On a one half crosswise. Answer the following questions: Pass your outputs
on the next meeting. Determine whether the sequence is arithmetic or non-arithmetic. If it is
arithmetic, find the common difference and the next two terms.
