Assignment 3
Calculation of the IHIP by the MBE Method

1. What are the main sources of reservoir energy and primary recovery? (list with
brief explanation)

2. Classify oil and gas reservoirs according to their driving mechanisms.

3. What is the MBE method and its basis for determining IHIP?

4. A gas reservoir has the following data: ( T =160 °F )

P, psia 4600 4300 4000 3700

Gp, MMM scf 0.000 9.486 18.758 26.816
z 0.860 0.830 0.800 0.760

Calculate the IGIP, G.

5. Given a small gas reservoir, with initial pressure of 3200 psia and temperature
of 220 °F. The pressure production history and gas volume factors are as
follows:

P, psia 3200 2925 2525 2125

Gp, MMM scf 0 79 221 452
βg, cu ft/scf 0.0052622 0.0057004 0.0065311 0.0073000

 Calculate the IGIP using production data at the end of each of the production
intervals, assuming volumetric behavior.
 Explain why the calculation in part (1) indicates a water drive reservoir.
 Based on electric logs and core data, volumetric calculation on the reservoir
showed that the IGIP is 1018 MMM scf. If the sand reservoir is under partial
water drive, what is the volume water encroached at the end of the periods?
There was no appreciable water production

6. For an undersaturated reservoir, given:

Cw = 3 x 10-6 psi-1 , Cf = 4 x 10-6 psi-1 , Swc = 18 % ,and

P, psi Np, MMstb βo, bbl/stb

7000 ― 1.38
6700 5.9556 1.42
6400 11.5847 1.46
6100 15.6770 1.49

7. Calculate the original oil in place for the following reservoir if: Pi = 4000 psi,
 = 25 % , Swc =30 %, water salinity = 30000 ppm , βoi = 1.4 bbl/stb , P = 3800
psi, βo = 1.41 bbl/stb, We = 2 x 103 bbl, Np = 3 x 106 stb, T = 200 °F.
