SCRIPT:
OPENING CREDITS:
The train station is empty, it cuts between the empty
station, the clock and the trainline app to Southall. The
scene is just a few seconds long before a train speeds
across and then masks to a girl sat on a train by
herself. SHASMI is sat by herself, in an empty carriage
and she is looking at her phone. It cuts to the screen of
her phone, scrolling on Instagram. Her phone drops out of
her hand and then the screen turns black except for the
phone falling. Then a train smashing into it and the
titling being revealed. The title masks on and says
‘BLOSSOMING ROOTS’. The screen zooms into the gap in the
O and there’s Shasmi, she is in her room, it pans from
her reflection in the mirror to her straightening her
hair. The scene turns to black except for the
straighteners which stay in frame as it comes up with the
straighteners as an ‘A’ as it says ‘A PRODUCTION BY’ and
my logo comes up. The straighteners go across the logo
and masks it away.

MUSIC: A BLEND OF MUSIC – WESTERN AND PUNJABI.

FADE TO

SCENE ONE: INT. TRAIN CARRIAGE – EARLY AFTERNOON

SHASMI is back on the train, she picks her phone back up


and sits back in her seat. The scene cuts to the doors
opening, a centralised shot as she leaves through the
doors.

SOUNDS: TRAIN DOOR OPENING, BEEPING SOUNDS, SHASMI


GRABBING HER BAG AND LEAVING, FOOTSTEPS.

CUT TO

SCENE TWO: EXT TO INT. COLLEGE ENTRANCE TO CANTEEN -


AFTERNOON

SHASMI makes her way back into college. She walks into
the canteen and sits down, taking her food out of a
curry, STUDENTS around her get up and leave and give her

dirty looks. She sighs and puts her food away, instead
getting up. It cuts to her sitting back down with western
food – a burger or a sandwich. She eats her food while
scrolling on tiktok, her for you page is full of the
western standards, she sighs and puts her phone down.
Finishing eating and then getting up and leaving.

SOUNDS: FOOTSTEPS, RUMMAGING THROUGH HER BAG,


CHAIR MOVING AGAINST THE FLOOR, PHONE BEING PUT
DOWN

CUT TO

SCENE THREE: INT TO EXT. HOME TO STREETS - LATE AFTERNOON

SHASMI receives a package from her grandma back in India.


The brown package is given to her by hands, we don’t see
who they belong too. She sits on the couch of her house
and opens the package up, revealing a box. The box is
full of bangles, clothing, letters and an heirloom.
Shasmi picks up the heirloom and examines it, it piques
her interest and she run out her house, a video of her
running down the street is shown, and then she reaches
her library.

SOUNDS: PAPER BEING RIPPED OPEN, BANGLES, TISSUE


PAPER.

MUSIC: UPLIFTING, UPBEAT.

CUT TO

SCENE FOUR: INT. LIBRARY – EARLY EVENING

She sits at the computer and searches ups a bunch of


things. Until it appears on screen, the picture clear as
day. A time lapse of Shasmi, she is looking at the
computer and the lights shine on her face as she changes
tabs, researches into the object. Shasmi turns to check
the time and it cuts to the clock. She realises it’s time
to go home and turns her laptop off. She leaves the chair
remains spinning.

SOUNDS: KEYBOARD TYPING, CLOCK TICKING.

MUSIC: FAST PACED, INTENSE, UPLIFTING.

CUT TO

SCENE FIVE: INT. TRAIN, EMPTY CARRIAGE - MORNING

SHASMI is on the train again. She is getting on a train


to Southall again, her music no longer English, but
Bollywood/Punjabi music. Her head against the window as
she approaches the station. A centralised shot as she
gets off to station.

SOUNDS: TRAIN DOOR OPENING, TRAIN SPEEDING ALONG,


BEEPING FROM THE DOOR

MUSIC: MIX OF WESTERN AND PUNJABI MUSIC

CUT TO

SCENE SIX: EXT. SOUTHALL MAIN STREET – LATE MORNING

SHASMI is walking into the town. The scene is of the


bustling town, the people surrounding Shasmi as she
walks. She stops, watching a family/a group of people in
a restaurant, eating food and enjoying themselves without
any issues. She sighs turns around and walks past the
camera. Masks her into the streets, roaming around and
looking at the stalls, the shops and the street food,
watching people enjoy the food, looking at the jewellery.
A lot of scenic shots – the sky, the people, the food,
the jewellery, the clothes, fabrics, etc.

SOUNDS: CAR HONKING, BUSTLING PEOPLE (TALKING,


FOOTSTEPS), SIZZLING FOOD SOUND OF PAYMENTS
GOING THROUGH, BIRDS.

MUSIC: PUNJABI MUSIC, SLOW TO UPBEAT AS MORE


THINGS GET SHOWN.

SCENE SEVEN: INT. SHOPS - AFTERNOON

We see the outside of her shop and it’s a saari and


lengha shop. Shasmi looks around. At the colours and the
styles before going into the changing rooms. She emerges
and does a spin, looking at herself in the mirror. She
smiles at herself. She tries on a few more as well before
leaving.

MUSIC: UPLIFTING, WESTERN AND PUNJABI MUSIC MIXED


TOGETHER

SOUNDS: CURTAINS OPENING.

SCENE EIGHT: EXT. PAVEMENT FLOOR - AFTERNOON

SHASMI and her FRIENDS are sat on the curb, enjoying


their street food, samosas, pani puree, spring rolls,
etc. A close up of Shasmi, happy and content as we zoom
out to show all her friends laughing and chatting.

CUT TO

SCENE NINE: INT. TRAIN CARRIAGE - MIDDAY

SHASMI is once again getting on the train, a bhindi on


and her western clothes. She is with her FRIENDS and she
pulls out a samosa and starts eating it. And no one looks
at her weird, no one says anything. She sits and happily
eats.

CUT TO

SCENE TEN: EXT. TRAIN STATION – MIDDAY

The train zooms past, and then the credits roll on.
