PREFACE

TVS Motor Company Ltd (TVS Motor), member of the TVS Group, is the
largest company of the group in terms of size and turnover, with more than 3
crore (30 million) customers riding a TVS bike.

TVS Motor Company is the third largest two-wheeler manufacturer in India,


with a revenue of over 20,000 Cr ($3 billion) in 2021-22. It is the flagship
company of the Rs. 71,000 Cr ($8.5 billion, in 2021) TVS Group. The company

TVS Motor Company is the third largest two-wheeler manufacturer in India,
with a revenue of over 13,000 Cr ($2 billion) in 2016-17. It is the flagship
company of the Rs. 40,000 Cr ($6 billion, in 2014-15) TVS Group. The
company has annual sales of 3 million units and an annual capacity of over 4
million vehicles. TVS Motor Company is also the 2nd largest exporter in India
with exports to over 60 Countries.

TVS was established by Mr. T.V. Sundaram Iyengar. He began with Delhi first
bus service in 1911 and founded T.V. Sundaram Iyengar and Sons Limited, a
company in the transportation business with a large fleet of trucks and buses
under the name of Southern Roadways Limited. When he died in 1955, his sons
took the company ahead with several forays in the automobile sector, including
finance, insurance, manufacture of two-wheelers, tyres, and components. The
group has managed to run 97 companies that account for a combined turnover
of nearly $6 billion.

Early years 100

Sundaram Clayton was founded in 1962 in collaboration with Clayton


Dewandre Holdings, United Kingdom. It manufactured brakes, exhausts,
compressors, and various other automotive parts. The company set up a plant at
Hosur in 1978, to manufacture mopeds as part of their new division. In 1980,
TVS 50, India's first two-seater moped rolled out of the factory at Hosur in
Tamil Nadu, Southern India. A technical collaboration with the Japanese auto
giant Suzuki Ltd. resulted in the joint-venture between Sundaram Clayton Ltd
and Suzuki Motor Corporation, in 1982. Commercial production of motorcycles
began in 1984.
Suzuki relationship

TVS and Suzuki shared a 19-year-long relationship that was aimed at


technology transfer, to enable design and manufacture of two-wheelers
specifically for the Indian market. Re-christened TVS-Suzuki, the company
brought out several models such as the Suzuki Supra, Suzuki Samurai, Suzuki
Shogun and Suzuki Shaolin. In 2001, after separating ways with Suzuki, the
company was renamed TVS Motor, relinquishing its rights to use the Suzuki
name. There was also a 30-month moratorium period during which Suzuki
promised not to enter the Indian market with competing two-wheelers.

Recent Launches include RTR 200, TVS Victor and TVS XL 100. TVS has
recently won 4 top awards at J.D. Power Asia Pacific Awards 2016, 3 top
awards at J.D. Power Asia Pacific Awards 2015 & Two-Wheeler Manufacturer
of the Year at NDTV Car & Bike Awards (2014–15)

In early 2015, TVS Racing became the first Indian factory team to take part in
the Dakar Rally, which is the longest and most dangerous rally in the world.
TVS Racing partnered with French motorcycle manufacturer Sherco for the
Dakar rally and named the team Sherco TVS Rally Factory Team. TVS
Racing also won the Raid de Himalaya and the FOX Hill Super Cross held at
Sri Lanka. In three decades of its racing history, the team has won more than
90% of the races.

In 2016 TVS started manufacturing the BMW G310R, a model co-developed


with BMW Motorrad.
Characteristics of TVS Motor
TVS Motor was the first Indian company to deploy a catalytic converter in a
100cc motorcycle and the first to indigenously produce a four stroke 150cc
motorcycle. The list of firsts from TVS: "India’s first 2-seater moped – TVS
50", "India’s first indigenous scooterette - TVS Scooty", "India’s first Digital
Ignition - TVS Champ", "India’s first fully indigenous motorcycle - Victor",
"First Indian company to launch ABS in a motorcycle - Apache RTR Series",
"The first scooter with Body-Balance Technology – Wego”, The clutch less
motorcycle=Jive", "Indonesia’s first dual-tone exhaust noise technology –
Tormax" & "India's first oil-cooled chamber construct with Ram- Air assist-
TVS Apache RTR 200 4V". TVS have gone through extensive quality
improvement programs thus producing world class two-wheelers.

Manufacturing Capability

TVS Motor has a production capacity of over 3 million Vehicles a year. The
company has four state of the art manufacturing plants - three located in India
(Hosur, Tamil Nadu; Mysore, Karnataka and Nagaland, Himachal Pradesh) and
one in Indonesia (Karawang).

Distribution

Today, TVS Motor functions through a nationwide network of more than 4000
touch points across all the states in India.

Awards

TVS Motor won prestigious the Deming Application Prize in 2002.

In the same year, the work done for the TVS Victor motorcycle won TVS
Motor the National Award for successful commercialization of indigenous
technology from the Technology Development Board, Ministry of Science &
Technology, Government of India. In 2004, TVS Scooty Pep won the
'Outstanding Design Excellence Award' from Business World magazine and
the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad.

The effective implementation of Total Productivity Maintenance practices won


TVS Motor the TPM Excellence Award given by the Japan Institute of Plant
Maintenance in 2008.

TVS Motor has won several management awards, notable among them being
the Emerging Corporate Giant in the Private Sector awarded by The Economic
Times and the Harvard Business School Association of India. Business Today
magazine awarded TVS Motor the Best Managed Company and the Most
Investor Friendly Company awards. Its advertising practices won it the Good
Advertising Award by Auto India Best Brand Awards, 2009.

The University of Warwick, United Kingdom, gave him an honorary Doctorate


of Science degree. while the Government of India honored him with the Padma
Shri, one of India's highest civilian distinctions.

Innovative implementation of Information Technology has won TVS Motor the


Ace Award for Most Innovative NetWeaver Implementation in 2007, awarded
by technology major SAP AG and the Team Tech 2007 Award of Excellence
for Integrated use of Computer-aided engineering Technologies.

Himalayan Highs, an initiative launched by TVS Motor Company has been


included in the India Book of Records when Anam Hashim became the first
woman on a 110cc scooter to complete the trip to Khardung La, the world’s
highest motorable stretch.

reflected in over 6 million satisfied owners of mopeds, motorcycles, and
scooters. Its 4000 highly motivated employees manufacture high quality

Products:

Two Wheelers in India was set up as a joint venture between TVS and Dunlop,
UK in 1960. The company supplies wheels as Original Equipment to all major
vehicle manufacturers in the country. Wheels India is entering into
collaboration with Titan, the world leader in off-highway vehicle wheels
relating to earthmoving, construction, and agricultural equipment.
Manufacturing Plants are located at Chennai, Tamil Nadu, Rampur, UP and
Ranjangaon, Maharashtra. Wheels India has a workforce of 100.

Products and Service

Wheels for commercial vehicles, cars, jeeps, tractors construction equipment /


earth mover and defense vehicle, wire wheels for export and air suspension
systems for commercial vehicle.
Subsidiaries of TVS Group:

TV Sundaram Iyengar and Sons Limited operates through the three following
divisions:

TVS Sundaram Motors Madras Auto Service

1. TVS and Sons distribute Heavy duty Commercial Vehicles, Jeeps and
Cars. It represents premier automotive companies like Ashok Leyland,
Mahindra and Mahindra ltd. Fiat and Honda. It also distributes
automotive spare parts for several leading manufacturers.

2. TVS & Sons has grown into a leading logistics solution provider and has
set up state-of-the-art warehouses all over the country. It has also
diversified into distributing Garage equipment that ranges from paint
booths to engine analyses and industrial products.

3. Sundaram Brake Linings Limited- First Indian company to manufacture


asbestos-free brake linings, woven clutch facings and disc pads for
automotive applications.

4. Sundaram Fasteners Limited- India’s largest manufacturer of radiator


caps to GM in USA.

5. Sundaram Finance Limited – Leading consumer finance company in


India.
6. Sundaram Industries Limited - with a reputation built over five decades,
comprises several divisions: custom molded rubber products, tyre service
and coach building. Also specializes in refrigerated trucks and bunk beds.
7. Sundaram Clayton Limited - Sundaram Clayton Limited was established
in 1962 in collaboration with Clayton Dewandre Holdings Plc. (WABCO
Automotive) pioneering the manufacture of air brake systems in India.
SCL enjoys a major share of the Indian OEM market as well as the
domestic aftermarket, which it caters to through a strong and well spread-
out distribution network SCL-Brakes division is the first company in
India and fourth company outside Japan to win the Deming award for
achieving distinctive performance improvements through TQM.

8. Sundaram Motors – Major dealer for Indian and foreign cars in South
India and foreign cars in South India. Established in 1966, Sundaram
Fasteners Limited (SFL) is today the largest manufacturer of high tensile
fasteners in India. SFL is also the principal supplier of radiator caps to
General Motors, North America. Powder metal parts include rotors &
gears, shock absorber components, value train components, structural
components, and bushes. Cold extruded parts include gear blanks
transmission parts, cams, starter sleeves & pinions and CV joint parts.
The radiator caps range includes oil filter caps and fuel filter caps, both
metallic and plastic.
Branched off into three divisions:

The Rubber Division started in 1962, manufactures molded rubber products for
the export and inland markets.
Coach Division, started in 1960, has its main plant in Madurai with two
branches. Its employees are about 900 people.
Tyre Service Division, with 28 branches and a workforce of 600: Sundaram
Finance and associate companies promote Trans energy Limited. It was
incorporated in 1981 in technical collaboration with deltec Fuel System BV,
Holland, internationally fuel charging systems for Internal Combustion Engines
using Gaseous Fuels as LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) and CNG (Compressed
Natural Gas). The factory and R&D Unit are located at Chennai.
A JV established in 1995 by T V Sundaram Iyengar & Sons Limited, Asia
Match Company Limited, Ashok Leyland Holdings Limited, Ashok Leyland
investments.
Limited from India with Worldwide Enterprises Pvt. Ltd of Sri Lanka. The
commercial operations commenced in 1997 and the Company has established a
vast network of over 60 dealers across the length & breadth of the Country.
Initially the focus was on distribution of genuine replacement parts from Ashok
Leyland and Tata commercial vehicles from Quality auto component
manufacturers from India, the JV is now looking at expanding the scope of
distribution to cover distribution of spare parts for Japanese vehicles also. The
core strength of the company is its large supplier base from India and vast
network of dealers.

TVS Interconnect System Limited was incorporated in the year 1999. The
company has its manufacturing facility located in Madurai. The Business
Development and Marketing Factions are headquarters in Bangalore. The
regional marketing offices are in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Delhi.
Manufacture and assembly of electronic connectors, Rf Coax Product, Cable
Assemblies, Fiber optic Products and accessories.

TVS Motor Company has one of the most extensive networks with over
500 dealers and 2500 Customer touch points.

We are the first in the two-wheeler industry to measure customer satisfaction,


audited by external consultants of international repute.

We have taken care to standardize facilities across all customer touch points.
Up gradation of faculties and continuous improvement in all processes is given
importance. The company also takes an active part in imparting training and
capability building in all areas including sales, service, and business
management. All our dealers are connected through the extended network of
SAP, ensuring operational efficiency.
Supply Chain Management

Forming the inner of the extended TVS family, our suppliers are involved at
every stage of product development.

We extend core values and best practices to all our suppliers. Through
continuous training forums we impart TPM (Total Productivity Maintenance)
and JIT (Just in Time) practices.

TVS suppliers are committed to quality through continuous improvement and


up gradation of processes. This has helped them obtain prestigious international
certifications like ISO 9000, QS 9000 & TS 16949.

The TVS Motor Company R&D team has a strong pool of technical talent
supported by state-of-the-art infrastructure capable of developing new and
innovative designs. Currently, more than 400 engineers work on developing
radically new products and cutting-edge engine technologies. Our R&D team
has developed the revolutionary Variable Timing Intelligent (VT-i) Engines,
one of the most innovative technologies developed in the two-wheeler industry.

TVS R&D Engineers have published multiple technical papers in international


conferences on engine and vehicle technologies. They also have a few patents
to their credit.

Social responsibility

This extended arm of the company believes in social responsibility and has

the country.
Economic development

The program enables people below the poverty line in these adopted villages
to earn their livelihood by involving them in activities that generate income.

Health

Health is one of the focus areas of the Srinivasan Service Trust. Dental care
camps: eye camps, health check-up and nutrition programs are conducted. The
initiative also focuses on primary health, maternal health, child-care, and
leprosy eradication.

Infrastructure Development

The Company is actively in the community development of the villages by


providing infrastructure facilities such as housing, sanitation, roads drains, bus
shelters, medical centers, and natural resources management.

Rebuilding Quake Hit Villages

Suppurated by Rural Research & Development Society and Kutch Nav Nirman
Abhiyan, the Company has rebuilt “Goyersama” a village in the District of
Gujarat, which was hit by an earthquake of unprecedented scale and magnitude
on 26th Jan 2001.
Education and literacy

In addition to providing infrastructure facilities like new buildings for school,


the Company helps establish computer education programs for school children.
The Srinivasan Service Trust has successfully achieved 98% primary school
enrollment in the adopted villages.

Strategy:

CONSOLIDATION is the current theme at TVS Motor. In the intervening


period, that is, before new models are rolled out – the company seems to be
trying to refocus and offer potential customers more choice with the launch of
new variants under the existing badges.

The new variants have been fine-tuned based on customer feedback. They will
attempt to offer more value to the customer, even as competitors have been
nibbling away at the company’s market share.

The new variants are basically spruced up versions of bikes that have either
been performing below expectations or attracting customers only in specific
markets.

Strengths in the SWOT Analysis of TVS:

Multiple brands across portfolio: TVS offers mopeds, motorcycles, scooters and
three wheelers and has popular brands amongst all the categories. For example,
motorcycles include popular brands like Apache RTR and Star City etc. whereas
scooters include TVS Jupiter and Scooty pep+ etc.

Strong financial performance: TVS has experienced strong financial


performance in recent years. It recorded growth in revenues (12.3%) and operating
margin (4.8%) in FY2016. Thus, the company has improved its financial
conditions which enhance shareholder’s value and supports growth plans.

Strong R&D capabilities: TVS has set up a strong research and development
department which allows constant innovation in its product design and include
newer technologies in its products. This provides a competitive advantage to TVS.
Weaknesses in the SWOT Analysis of TVS:

Lack of Scale: Although TVS has experienced the increase in revenues in the
recent past, it still doesn’t stand tall when compared to large companies like Bajaj
Auto and hero MotoCorp. These companies have the capital advantage over TVS.

Overdependence on domestic market: India is TVS motor’s primary market


contributing over 75 percent of its revenues. TVS has limited geographical
diversity and hence is over dependent on the Indian market. Any vulnerability in
the Indian market will affect the company’s finances.
Opportunities in the SWOT Analysis of TVS:

Growing Indian 2-Wheeler market: India has witnessed rapid growth in the 2-
wheeler market which is expected to continue in the near future. India is the
second fastest growing market in the two-wheeler industry. This presents an
opportunity for TVS to encapsulate the demand created.

Growth in three-wheeler market: The three-wheeler passenger as well as load


carrier market is growing in India. The three-wheeler industry has grown with a
CAGR of 4.4% from the period 2005-2015. This also creates and opportunity for
TVS.

Optimistic outlook for global motorcycle industry: TVS must look forward to
expanding operations globally in order to tap the positive outlook for the global
motorcycle industry which is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.3% till 2019.
Threats in the SWOT Analysis of TVS:

Intense competition: The Indian two-wheeler industry is highly competitive with


the presence of various multinational and national brands such as Yamaha, Bajaj
Auto, Honda, and hero Motor Corp etc. TVS being subjected to such competition
must constantly innovate in order grow in such intense competitive atmosphere.

Environmental regulations: The Company is subjected to various stringent


environmental regulations which are constantly upgraded and hence the compliance costs
increase.

Structure is the basis for a specialization and coordination influenced primarily by


strategy and by organization activities are divided grouped and coordinated the
relationship between the personnel in the organization is the formalized intentional
structure of roles and positions in the organization.
