The document discusses the history and evolution of four inventions - the umbrella, eyeglasses, cellular phones, and videophones. It traces the umbrella back 4000 years to ancient Egypt, Assyria, Greece and China. Eyeglasses were invented in 13th century Italy to improve vision. Martin Cooper led the invention of the first portable cellular phone in 1973. In 1995, Filipino engineer Gregorio Zara invented the first videophone, allowing two-way video and audio calls over phone lines.

The invention of the umbrella can be traced back from 4,000
years ago that was used in early civilizations in Egypt, Assyria, Greece, and China. Originally, they were used as parasols to provide shade from the sun. Later on, when the Chinese waxed and lacquered their paper parasol, they invented the first waterproof umbrella for rain protection. In the present time, umbrellas were now comprised with fabric, vinyl plastic, wood and other modern materials. Thus, it become sturdier and not easily breakable. It also came in different sizes and designs which are convenient, easy to keep as well as stylish. However, its uses and importance remain the same- to protect us from the pouring rain and scorching sun. It also protects us from the diseases brought by adverse weather condition. II. MEDIEVAL TIME
Eyeglasses
The inventor being unknown, the first spectacle was
invented in Italy in the 13th century. Its primitive lenses were set into wooden, leather, or bone frames being held before in the face or perched on the nose. Eyeglasses were designed primarily to improve the user's ability to read by enlarging the letter and other objects. It helps people with poor eyesight, both nearsighted and farsighted. Through the years, eyeglasses grew to be “hands-free" with the improvement of temples to extend over the ears. In the present, it became more comfortable and fashionable to use. It becomes lightweight and came in various shapes and sizes. Hence, many people do not only use eyeglasses to aid their vision but also for aesthetic purposes. With the help of modern technology, innovators continue to improve glasses and gave birth to spectacles that held many purposes such as sun protection and anti-radiation. III. MODERN TIME
Cellular Phone
The invention of the cellular phone or in short cell phone, a
handheld device that was primarily used for communication, was led by Martin Cooper an engineer from Motorola company from 1972 to 1973. The portable device could connect to the Advanced Mobile Phone System (AMPS) that was developed by Bell Labs. It works through sending and receiving messages from mobile phones via radio frequencies. Then, the first cellular phone which called DynaTAC was launched. It weighted over 1.1 kilograms and was 23 cm tall and people can only have 35 minutes of talk before its battery ran down. In 1973, further development were done to the device which gave birth to another version of portable phone, the DynaTAC 8000x. Evidently, the cellphone was a success. Many years later, this invention evolve as the cellular phone that we are using today. The advancement of technology over the years give way to many companies to manufacture much advanced phones. Today, they comprised of many features. They are lightweight, can suit through the pocket, can be touch through the screen and came in different versions. It's function also does not limit anymore as a means of communication but also for storing data, entertainment, photography and many more. IV. PHILIPPINE INVENTION
Videophone
Gregorio Y. Zara, a renowned Filipino engineer, and
physicist invented the first videophone in the year 1995. The invention is a two-way television-telephone, a device that simultaneously transmits and receives both audio and video signals over telephone lines. Hence, it allows the people to see each other while conversing. This gives way for an effective distance learning and video conferencing. It also proved to be helpful for people who have impaired hearing. Today, given the advancement of technology, many inventions including wireless and hand-held gadgets emerged. In particular, with the use of smartphones and the internet, video calling becomes much more convenient. Reflect how we can communicate with other people face to face even at a great distance using Skype, Facebook and many others.
