I love riot grrrl. There’s something about women

screaming about how much they hate patriarchy that is
just inherently awesome, and when I was starting to
take more of an active interest in feminism, Bikini
Kill and Bratmobile were pretty much the soundtrack
to my entire existence. But I think it’s important to
remember that Riot Grrrl as a ~political movement~
was ultimately flawed. It focused heavily on the
struggles of white, cis women, and lacked inclusivity
and intersectionality.
That being said, I love the idea of DIY and grrrl
love it promoted.

There are some valuable things I learnt/gained from

riot grrrl, but I recognise that my white and cis
privilege were part of what made that possible. While
I still love riot grrrl music, I don’t think the
politics are worth reviving unless it’s gonna be a
hell of a lot more inclusive and intersectional.
