preliminary Proposal

Manhole Rehabilitation
Lining System

This document should be considered preliminary and not a specification. Upon your review and initial
acceptance, a complete; specification, method statement, warranty document and quality assurance,
inspection and testing program will be provided for review and confirmation.

Purpose
The purpose of this document is to define the engineering basis relevant to our design feasibility
recommendation. We are including details for the liner material recommendation and robotics systems
required of the application. We have reviewed the RFI provided and confirm that the liner system
proposed is suitable for the application and design life requirements defined in the documentation
provided.

The project involves lining of an existing concrete and brick manholes. The client is seeking functional and
economical solutions for the rehabilitation of the manholes.

Products Recommended

After review of the documents, we have concluded that our recommended liner system would be an
elastomeric polyurea on treated and primed concrete or brick.

The products recommended are selected based on; project specific conditions, client documents
provided, drawings, geographic location, ambient temperatures, specific soil densities, effluent, substrate
condition and robotic application capability.

The installed system will provide specific minimum, tensile, elongation, abrasion and chemical resistance
properties, be capable of bridging cracks and gaps resulting from movement or settlement without any
breach in the liner, and remain permanently bonded to the substrate
The dry film thickness of the polyurea layer shall be minimum 3mm (120 mils), and comply with the
specifications, exclusive of primer, surface treatments, repair grouts, or other integral repair materials.
The systems physical properties, process properties, test methods and inspections shall be in accordance
with Nukote Coating Systems International’s specifications, and other referenced standards included
herein.
The application requirement shall be as defined in the final approved technical specifications and comply
with the requirements contained in the approved project specific method statement, technical data
sheets (TDS) and safety data sheets (SDS).
All surface preparation and repairs to substrate, including the bonding layer, shall be carried out with
approved products in compliance with the direction from the product manufacturer.

CONCRETE LINER SYSTEM (For RCP)

Surface Conditioners: Nukote HLT SR

Surface Treatment and Repair: Premera PolyPatch CB or Nukote SPU Foam
6 # f3 closed cell foam at 6‐12mm / 1/4‐1/2 inch
Primer: Nukote EP Prime II at 100‐150 microns / 4‐6 mils

Liner: Nukote ST‐M @ minimum 120 mils

Surface Preparation, Substrate Conditioners and Ancillaries

Abrasive blasting is required

We would recommend UHP for cleaning and surface preparation if all existing repair materials, organics
and loose materials are removed. Remove existing coatings prior to application of the system which may
affect the performance and adhesion of the system.

Large voids and spalls would be filled with an acceptable twin pack epoxy mortar ‐ Premera PolyPatch CB.
Do not use cementitious mortars. Areas where ingress is present will be injected using hydrophobic
injection resins – Nukote Hydrogrout II or equivalent prior to relining.

Dewatering is required

Dewatering prior to initiation of the relining works is required. This can be phased and moved section by
section as the work proceeds.

Shunting is required

The system proposed is not a live slip line. Areas where the reline will take place need to be offline during
the work. This can be accomplished by shunting during the work between access locations.

Nukote HLT SR

Nukote HLT shall be used following surface preparation. Apply directly to the concrete substrate with
single component moderate pressure airless. Apply at a rate of 200 square feet per gallon 24 hours prior
to application of primers. No secondary abrasive blasting or water jetting is required following use of
Nukote HLT SR.

Robotic application is recommended.

Primer & Liner Products

We recommend a non‐structural liner that is fully bonded to the substrate. Primers are required where a
stronger bond to the substrate is desirable. Terminations, day‐joints, lateral intersects, and connections
at vaults are typical examples of where primers shall be used. An inter‐coat primer is specified, for use
only with repairs or when recoat windows are exceeded.

Repair materials recommended:

Premera PolyPatch CB

Premera PolyPatch CB Epoxy Repair Paste is a two‐component, moisture insensitive, high modulus, high
strength, structural epoxy pastes adhesive available in cartridge and bulk kits. Its specially formulated non‐
sag properties are perfect for large overhead and vertical repairs.

Nukote SPU Foam

Nukote SPU Foam is a two‐component, rigid polyurethane spray foam. Nukote SPU Foam systems are light
density spray polyurethane insulations designed to be fluid‐applied to construction surfaces to affect a
permanent, monolithic and dimensionally stable surface with thermal insulation.

Primers recommended:

Nukote EP Prime II

A plural component primer, that achieves good bond to concrete substrates. When combined with HLT‐
SR surface treatment, high performance levels can be expected. The product is applied manually

Premera AE T7 LF

A single component primer, that achieves strong bonds to most substrates, for use during repairs and
when overcoat windows are exceeded. The product is applied manually.

Composite liner recommended:

Nukote ST‐M

Nukote ST‐M has characteristics and physical properties best suited for these applications. Nukote ST‐M
is suitable on substrates where; faster gelling time, minimized outgassing, and minimum sagging are
desirable. Nukote ST‐M is a two‐component, 100% solids, pure Polyurea that significantly reduces
downtime in new construction and rehabilitation. This aromatic Polyurea Elastomer displays good

resistance to a broad range of chemicals including hydrogen Sulphide and methane. It has excellent
thermal stability, abrasion resistance and UV resistance.
Nukote ST‐M will be the internal surface of a composite semi structural liner. The product will be applied
over the structural elastomeric base layer.
The product will be applied robotically.

Summary

The liner system, surface preparation, surface conditioners and the primers defined above, will perform
for the design life factor utilized of 50‐years. The warrantable period – which shall not exceed 25 years‐
can be included at a cost. All the products specified are manufactured by Nukote Coating Systems in the
United States of America.

The liner system, primers and surface conditioners defined above, allow for use of robotics in the
application, guaranteeing exact dry film thickness to the specified DFT. Some manual applications will be
required; surface repair, injections and terminations will be manual. Our assumption is that 85% of the
installation shall be installed robotically.

This system meets or exceeds the 85% rule.

Robotics Recommended

The robotics recommended utilize our standard 360 Ringtech® system.

The following critical design elements were engineered and incorporated into our robotics system
proposal for these projects.

1. All robotic components to be accessible using 20” minimum diameter access ports

2. Capable for pipe diameters from 18” to 172”

3. Reach from access point to access point is 1,148 lineal feet. Robotics can be staged to apply in two
directions from a single access point

Key application details

Key application details include:

1. Material consumption per vertical foot for each diameter

2. Price range per vertical foot for each diameter

3. Robotics speed per vertical foot for each diameter

Material consumption by diameter per vertical foot

Note that the liner thickness defined is based on engineering utilizing the performance characteristics of
the liner products specified, the maximum depth, the internal pressure, effluent, regional wet and dry soil
densities, expected longitudinal and latitudinal ground movement of less than 5%, shear ground
movement of less than 1%, and other factors.

Codes and standards utilized in whole or in part include:

AWWA M28 Class III
ASHTRO Transportation Standards for use in pipe under roadways
ASTM (multiples)

Note that the application cost range defined above is inclusive of all works and costs for a turn key project.
The material costs will be less than 20% of the total included above. Extended warranty costs are also
included.

Robotics speed by diameter per vertical foot

Note that the liner installation speed defined above is limited to the time required to robotically apply the
liner to the specified thickness.

Preparation works, dewatering, repairs etc., require additional time. As with most projects the initial
works will add time to the period but when a section to line is complete the robotic timing will be
applicable.
