GRAMMAR

Simple Present Tense indicates an action which happens in the present, but it isn’t
necessary for actions to happen right now. Simple present tense indicates, unchanging
situations, general truths, scientific facts, habits, fixed arrangements and frequently
occurring events.

THE STRUCTURES OF SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE

POSITIVE FORMS (+) :
We form the present tense using the base form of the infinitive (without TO). In
general, in the third person we add 'S' in the third person.

Subject Verb The Rest of the sentence

I / you / we / they cook / play at home

he / she / it cooks / plays at home

Examples of POSITIVE
• Mr. Green works with my uncle
• She reads the newspaper every day
• You work at the library
• They play with my dog

NEGATIVE FORMS (-):
The following is the word order to construct a basic negative sentence in
English in the Present Tense using Don't or Doesn't.

Subject don't/doesn't Verb* The Rest of the

sentence
I / you / we / they don't have / buy cereal for breakfast
he / she / it doesn't eat / like
etc.

Examples of Negative Sentences with Don't and Doesn't:

QUESTION FORMS (?) :

The following is the word order to construct a basic question in English using Do or
Does.

Do/Does Subject Verb* The Rest of the sentence

Do I / you / we / they have / need a new bike?

Does he / she / it want etc.

*Verb: The verb that goes here is the base form of the infinitive = The
infinitive without TO before the verb. Instead of the infinitive To have it is
just the have part.

Remember that the infinitive is the verb before it is conjugated (changed)

and it begins with TO. For example: to have, to eat, to go, to live, to speak
etc.

7
Examples of Questions with Do and Does:

• Does she sing opera?

• Do you eat Chinese food?
• Do they walk every day together?
• Does she work for your father?
• Does he like your new car?

Short Answers with Do and Does

In questions that use do/does it is possible to give short answers to direct

questions as follows:

We form the present tense using the base form of the infinitive (without the TO).
In general, in the third person we add 'S' in the third person.

Subject Verb The Rest of the sentence

I / you / we / they speak / learn English at home

speaks /
he / she / it learns English at home
The spelling for the verb in the third person differs depending on the ending of that verb:

go – goes catch – catches wash – washes kiss – kisses fix – fixes

For verbs that end in a consonant + Y, we remove the Y and add -IES.

marry – marries study – studies carry – carries worry – worries

NOTE: For verbs that end in a vowel + Y, we just add -S.

play – plays

READING

Going to work in the morning

My job is a long distance from my home, almost 50 miles away. I have to wake up early
every morning, as I’m always in a rush. There’s never enough time for a relaxed
breakfast. At exactly 6:00 AM, I get into my car and start the long drive.
I usually like driving on the highway more than in the city. During the morning rush hour,
though, it’s not very enjoyable. The heavy traffic is a little bit annoying. So I always
listen to my favorite classical music CD’s in the car – Chopin, Mozart, and Bach. That
cheers me up a lot.
The drive to work takes about one hour. Going back home in the evening after work
takes even longer, maybe around 70 minutes. Lately I’ve been thinking about trying to
take the train to work instead of driving. That way, I could still listen to my music with
headphones, and even read a novel at the same time.

This is My autobiography.
I am Stella. I was born in Quito, Ecuador. I am 23 years old. I studied
elementary school in a town near Quito. This was a public school. I remember
this school was great, it was small and all the children from the town went there
to study. There were not many students, so I met good friends there. When I
was 15, I moved to Mexico City and I studied in a public high school. This was
difficult. I did not know many people and everywhere was crowded and noisy.
It was difficult for me to adapt to. I remember people in my group were loud, but
now I know that is Mexican style. They were great to me and we went to parties
a lot. Then I decided to study the arts. I remember painting since I was a little
girl and everybody loves what I do.

When I was 15 I received my first kiss, it was a goodbye kiss because I was
moving to Mexico. German, a boy who studied with me didn’t want me to leave
Ecuador. He was very attentive and generous to me. I liked him very much but
I didn’t love him. People from Ecuador are nice and generous but we love our
freedom and, in my case, I take love pretty seriously. That’s whyI think I have
never fallen in love.

airport as quickly as possible. The traffic on the roads was very bad and,
unfortunately, Martin's taxi arrived at the airport late. His plane left for Spain at

The Pyramids of Egypt

Why were the pyramids built?

The pyramids were built as a resting place and

to protect the Kings and queens of Egypt and
other important people. Around were 130
pyramids built, the biggest one was the Great
Pyramid of Giza. This was the tallest building in
the world for 3800 years until the Eiffel Tower
was built. It was built for the Pharaoh

Khufu and took 20 years to build it! They were built next to the River Nile, this was because
it was easier for the builders to move the large stones by boat and then they were pulled to
the building area. Scientists today are still not completely sure how the ancient Egyptians
moved the massive stones. Once a pyramid was finished it was covered with white stone
and gold was put on the top. In the bright Egyptian sunshine, the white and the gold would
have gleamed brightly.
The ancient Egyptian engineers planned the pyramids so that there were many rooms and
tunnels. It was thought that the pyramid rooms were for the pharaohs and all of their
valuables. The engineers knew that thieves would try to steal the gold and jewels, so they
made traps and false rooms. They put doors which opened onto a wall. But it didn’t stop the
thieves as many of the pyramids were robbed. Anyone who tried to steal from the pyramids
was immediately put to death.
The Egyptians believed that people would move on to another life, so they filled the pyramids
with many jewels, gold, and even food. They thought that the pharaoh wouldneed these
things in their next life. The body was cleaned and wrapped in bandages to protect it and put
it into a stone case. They also have many of their things buried with them and people drew
beautiful pictures on the walls which told the story of their lives. The ancient Egyptians used
a language called ‘Hieroglyphics’ which was a mixture of drawings and signs. So, we can
discover how these kings and queens lived.

Vocabulary
Match the words with the correct definition

 tomb  to preserve a dead body by wrapping it up
 customary  things that a person owns
 mummify  something that makes people want to visit
 possessions a location
 rob  to steal something from a place
 a structure where a dead person is buried

The Egyptian pyramids are some of the most structures inthe world. Although they
are popular tourist attractions today, the pyramids were originally built as tombs for
ancient Egyptian kings . At the time, itwas customary to mummify dead rulers and
bury them with their possessions. However, many pyramids have been robbed
throughout history ,and most are empty today. The first known pyramid was built
around 2600 B.C, for a king named Djoser. The largest and most famous Egyptian
pyramids – the Great Pyramids of Giza – were built between 2500 and 2400 B.C, and
there is still a lot of mystery surrounding their construction. It would have been very
difficult to build such massive structures without modern
technology . Historians believe that at least 20,000 workerswere needed to
complete the Great Pyramids.

Permanent communities was agriculture. A turning point in human history, the
invention of farming and the tremendous changes it brought about have been
called the agricultural revolution. After farming was developed in the Middle
East about 6500 bc, people living in tribes or family units did not have to be on

could control the production of food and be assured of a reliable annual supply
of it, their lives changed completely.

READING

Read carefully: Mount Everest

The Highest Garbage Dump in the World?

Most people know that Mount Everest is the highest mountain in fact that many people do
not know: it has become one of the dirtiest mountains in the world.
Mount Everest is one of the toughest and most exciting mountains to climb on Earth. It is not
the coldest or the windiest place on Earth, but it comes close! These challenges make it
one of the most attractive mountains for serious climbers. More than 3500 climbers tried
to reach the top. Unfortunately, most of them have left equipment and trash on the
mountain.
Trash is now one of the biggest threats to the environment on Mount Everest. Local
organizations brought tons of trash down from the mountain. One of the most interesting
projects handed over more than a ton of tin cans, glass bottles, and old climbing tools to
artists in Nepal. The artists used the trash to create works of art. Then, they sold the art to
raise money for local charities.

Circle the correct word to complete each statement.

If you go camping and want to spend the night in a
tent, you will need certain items.
Today's tents are normally made of nylon, canvas or
other light material. They aren`t the most expensive at
the stores and they are the easiest to fold together and
carry around with you, especially if you are
backpacking. The material has to be waterproof and is
easy to put up.

If you want to sleep in a tent, you will need a sleeping bag. It protects you from the
outside cold and is warmer than a blanket. Sleeping bags come in different sizes,
colors, and shapes.
Sleeping on the ground isn`t the most comfortable way. Some campers have
foam pads or air mattresses, which they lie on and it is softer than the ground.
Clothing is an important aspect when you go on a camping holiday. Be sure to take
clothes with you that will protect you from the sun, rain, and insects. Take along
some lightweight trousers, comfortable shoes, and warm shirts or a jacket for cold
evenings. Always carry a raincoat or poncho with you. Hiking boots are good if you
walk a lot.
You will also need other everyday items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, and
soap. Take along sunglasses, maps, and a compass or maybe even a GPS
device.
Campers should also have waterproof matches, extra batteries, a knife and a
lantern or torch with them.

The family climbed out of the car and walked slowly into the restaurant. Dad was in a
very good mood because it was his 60th birthday that day. He used to hate celebrating
his birthday, but now that he’s older. He enjoys the attention. It was very hot that night,
possibly the hottest night of the year. They all chose to go to the fish and Seafood
restaurant in their village. It had air-conditioning so it wouldn’t be as hot as at home.

When they sat down the waiter came quickly to bring them the menus. He told
them about the specials that evening and gave them some time to decide what they
wanted to order. Mom ordered salmon, Luke ordered shrimp and Dad decided to have
something special lobster.

They started their meal with some nice salads and delicious, crispy bread with olive oil.
They were talking about the rest of their summer holidays. Then the main courses
arrived. They all smelled absolutely fantastic. Then suddenly Dad saw something
strange. The lobster on his plate was still moving its claws. He was shocked!

The waiter came over immediately and picked up the plate with the moving
lobster. He brought it back to the kitchen and came back to the table a few minutes later
with another plate of lobster. After apologizing he offered to give him the lobster for
free. Even though Dad was surprised by what had happened he ate his lobster hungrily
and was happy to get a free meal on his birthday.

The Object Pronoun – it

Be careful when using 'it' as an object pronoun because it is only in the correct context that it has meaning. It
needs to have already been mentioned or obvious to the listener what you are referring to. Compare; You are
sitting on it! (The listener probably doesn't know what the speaker refers to).
The letter is on the sofa. You are sitting on it! (It is obvious in the second sentence that the reference is to the
