Let’s get ready, ready (Enter Abram not noticing the other two)
Samson – Hey look a Montague, Go beat him up (They Fight)

Gregory – Okay. Hey you! Yeah, you ugly… ahh… I mean (Enter Lady and Lord Capulet from one side of the stage.
Montague. Enter Lady and Lord Montague for the other side of the stage)

Abram – Capulets! You don’t know when to stop do you? Lord Capulet – My sword, I say. Old Montague has come

Abram – Do you bite your thumb at me sir? Lord Montague – Thou Villain Capulet! Hold me not, let

Gregory – Oh look another Montague Prince – Rebellious subjects, enemies to peace. Will they
not hear? (Loud as possible) STOP!!!
(Enter Tybalt)
(They all stop and go to their respective sides)
Samson – Hey Tybalt, these Montagues don’t want to
fight, they’re babies! Prince – This is the third time this year you have caused a
riot on MY streets, and I am really getting tired of it. If you ever

(Tybalt nods) Good, now, on pain of death, all men depart. Go!
(All exit except Benvolio, Lord and Lady Montague) 1 - So what’s going on?

Lady Montague – Benvolio, have you seen Romeo lately? 4 - You mean you’re not following it?

Benvolio – No, my friend has been avoiding me 1 - Well, kind of, I think

Lord Montague – He has been acting rather strange lately 3 - I’ve got that we are in Italy

Lady Montague – Find out what’s wrong with him, OK? 2 - Yeah ‘In fair Verona where we lay our scene’ That
means we are in Verona, Italy
Benvolio – Will do.
1 - I see! I get it now.
(Lord and Lady Montague Exit)
4 - And there are two families
(Romeo Enters)
1 - The Montagues (make that side of the audience cheer)
Benvolio - Romeo, Romeo!
2 - And The Capulets (make that side of the audience
Romeo – Benvolio, there is this really cool girl, Rosaline, I
cheer) and they have been fighting for years and years constantly
mean, she’s cute! Anyway I like her a lot, But she want’s nothing
killing each other.
to do with me, what do I do?
1 - And The Prince is bored of all the fighting and has
Benvolio – Don’t worry about her, there are other fish in
warned them that if it doesn’t stop he’s going to get involved and
the sea
it won’t be pretty!
Romeo – yeah whatever. But hey, I hear she’s going to be
2 - Also, the Capulets have a daughter called Juliet and
at a big party tonight, should we go?
The Montague’s have a son called Romeo
Benvolio – yes, and I will show you other girls more
3 - And Romeo is sad because he was in love with
beautiful than her. Like her! Right there in the audience (points at
someone and they don’t love him back
audience member) and I will make thee think thy swan a crow.
4 - Rosaline!
Romeo – You’re on!
1 - Bless you
(They Exit)
2 - That’s her name!
(Narrators appear)
1 - Oh! 2 & 3 -It’s her name!

3 - And this whole story has been written by Shakespeare 4 - But she doesn’t like him back, so his mate, Benvolio
has taken him to a party to see if he can meet someone new
4 - Who has written 37 plays and 154 sonnets
1, 2 &3 - Right!
2 - That’s amazing
2 - So what happens now?
1 - So what else do we know about him?
4 - Well now we go across to the Capulet house
4 - Well he invented over 1700 words in the English
langue and lots of the phrases we use today were invented by 1 - Where Juliet lives
Shakespeare, like break the ice, heart of gold, green eyed
4 - And Paris has come round to see if he will be allowed
monster, fair play…
to marry Juliet
2 - Right, hang on, that’s like loads of info, can we rewind
3 - This is more complicated than Eastenders!
a second
4 - Just be quiet and watch, it will all make sense.
1 - Yeah please

3 - So, we are in the city of Verona, Italy

Act 1 Scene 2
2 - Right
(Enter Lord Capulet and Paris)
4 - There are two families that hate each other The
Montagues and The Capulets Paris – Lord Capulet, I like your Daughter, can I marry
her?
1 - Got that
Lord Capulet – Paris buddy, listen, my daughter is only
2 - Romeo
13. She can’t even drive yet! Why don’t you wait about 2 more
3 - (Pleased with themselves) who is a Montague years and then we can talk

2 - Is in love with a girl Paris – Pleeeeeeease, Pretty Please

4 - Rosaline

1 - Bless you
Lord Capulet – Hmmm, Well I am having this really cool 2 - Yeah, I mean, I don’t even like boys, I definitely don’t
party tonight. Why don’t you come, and if Juliet likes you and says want to marry one eeerrrrrgggghhhhhhh
yes, then, why not!
4 - But you have to remember that life was very different
Paris – Awesome then

(All Exit) 2 - How?

4 - Well to start with, women weren’t allowed to work so

they needed to find someone who could look after them as they
Act 1 Scene 3
weren’t allowed money of their own.
(Enter Lady Capulet, Nurse and Juliet)
1 - Seems a bit unfair to me
Lady Capulet – Juliette, my daughter, I hear Paris thinks
4 - It was and on top of that you weren’t allowed to marry
you are really cute.
just anyone
Nurse – I have been your nurse all your life Juliette, and I
2 - What do you mean?
believe you should think about this guy
4 - Well you had to marry someone who was considered
Lady Capulet – Have you thought about marriage yet,
the same social class as them, so if you were rich then you could
because he is very good looking
only marry a rich person and if you were poor then you wouldn’t
Juliet – If I like him I will think about it even be allowed to speak to a rich person.

Nurse – Hey lets go to the party! 3 - So is that why Romeo and Juliet had never spoken

(All Exit) 4 - Exactly!

(Narrators enter) 2 - So at the party Juliet is being set up with Paris then

1 - That seems a bit unfair 3 - Because he’s from the same class and wealthy

4 - What does? 4 - Like Juliet’s family

3 - Well, she’s only 13 and her mum was trying to get her 1 - I get it! So what were these parties like then?
to get married, that seems a bit young!
4 - Well they were big posh attractions and everyone
wore masks and dressed up and danced with each other

3 - So Juliet will have to dance with Paris, even though

Act 1 Scene 4
she’s not met him yet
(Enter Romeo, Mercutio and Benvolio, wearing masks)
4 - Yeah it’s how they will be introduced
jBenvolio - Mercutio, are you sure that by wearing these
2 - Cool, well let’s get the party started then!
masks we will be safe at the Capulet party?
(They go to leave)
Mercutio – No problem, they will have no clue
3 - Hang on!
Romeo – well here we are, but I don’t see Rosaline
1, 2 & 4 - What?
Benvolio – Dude, I told you, look at the other girls
3 - I’ve just thought of something, Romeo and his friends
Romeo – Yeah, yeah.
are going to be at the party, because they want to meet girls
right? Mercutio – You need to laugh my friend, If love be rough
with you; be rough with love.
1 & 2 - Right
Romeo – Leave me alone
3 - But this is a Capulet party, if he or his boys get caught
that’s going to be big trouble! (Enter Lord and Lady Capulet, Juliet, Tybalt and Nurse.
All other characters make up partygoers in masks, all dancing
2 - Probably a good job that they are wearing masks then
around having fun)
1 – Let’s hope that they don’t do anything stupid and get
Party Dance - Taylor Swift, Love Story - into Romeo and
caught
Juliet Dance -
3 - Are all of Shakespeare’s plays this exciting?
(Romeo and Juliet notice each other and dance
4 - Yeah they are! together, they return to their groups after but can’t take their
eyes off each other)
2 - I’m definitely going to have to read more after this!
Romeo – What lady is that which doth enrich the hand of
4 - So back we go to Verona and on to the party!
yonder Knight?
Mercutio – No clue man

Romeo – (To himself whilst taking off mask to get a better Act 2 Scene 1
look at Juliet) O she doth teach the torches to burn bright

Tybalt – (Noticing Romeo) What! a Montague in the

(Enter Romeo and Juliet)
house of Capulet?
Romeo – (Seeing Juliet) But, soft what light through
Lord Capulet – Tybalt, don’t pick a fight tonight
yonder window breaks, is it the east, and Juliet is the sun
Tybalt – What!? Aghhhh…. I will get him later
Juliet – Ay Me!
(Tybalt Exits)
Romeo – (Overwhelmed with her words) She speaks! Oh
Romeo – (To Juliet) Hey you’re cute speak again bright angel

Juliet – So are you Juliet – O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?
Deny thy father and refuse thy name; Or if thou wilt not, be but
Nurse – Juliet, your mother wants to talk with you
sworn my love, and ill no longer be a Capulet, what’s in a name?
Romeo – Who is her mother? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as
sweet.
Nurse – Lady Capulet
Romeo – (Aside) She is my sworn enemy, but look at her,
Romeo – (Dramatically to audience) Noooo… my mom is WOW she hot! See, how she leans her cheek upon her hand! Oh
gonna kick off! I just fell in love with a Capulet! that I were a glove upon that hand, that I might touch that cheek.
(All Exit, except Juliet and Nurse) (Romeo is in a daze)

Juliet – Nurse who was that? Juliet – O Romeo, Romeo!... where are you? Hello! HEY
ROMEO
Nurse – Romeo a Montague
Romeo – Oh yeah sorry, just day dreaming over here, Hey
Juliet – (Dramatically to audience) Noooo… Uh oh, that’s I love you.
trouble, I just fell in love with a Montague
Juliet – and I love you
(All Exit)
Romeo – Hey I got an idea, let’s get married.
Juliet – Okay, I will send my Nurse tomorrow to find out Romeo – Yeah
the time and place of our marriage.
Friar Lawrence – (Still outraged) Are you crazy?
Romeo – cool
Romeo – But I am in love
Nurse – (Offstage) Juliet
Father Lawrence – (Very calm) well, okay. This might end
Juliet – Good night, good night! Parting is such sweet the feud between the Montagues and the Capulets
sorrow, that I shall say good night till it be the morrow
Romeo – Awesome
(Juliet exits)
(They Exit)
Romeo – I need to go talk to Friar Lawrence to figure out
this marriage thing
Act 2 Scene 3
(Romeo Exits)
(Enter Mercutio and Benvolio)

Benvolio – Mercutio, have you seen Romeo since last

Act 2 Scene 2
night party?

Mercutio – (Joking) He’s probably still in love with

(Enter Friar Lawrence) Rosaline

Friar Lawrence – Ah what a beautiful morning (Picks and (Romeo enters)

imaginary flower, sniffs in and the prick his finger) Ouch. Plants,
Romeo – Hey guys!
like people, can be both good and evil.
Mercutio – (Teasing Romeo) Still in love with Rosaline?
(Enter Romeo)
Romeo – well now that you mention it…
Friar Lawrence – Romeo, what brings you here today?
(Enter Nurse)
Romeo – I have a small request, and it’s slightly
complicated…. I want to get married… to Juliet. Nurse – So what’s the plan?
Friar Lawrence – (Outraged) The Capulet!
Mercutio – (sarcastically) Hey Romeo, now she’s better 4 - Well he just wants peace in Verona and I think he’s
that Rosaline hoping that if the children get married it will force the two
families to be nice to each other
Nurse – (To Romeo) what saucy merchant was this that
was so full of himself? 1 - I don’t think that’s going to happen

Romeo – Ignore him, Tell Juliet we will get married this 2 - Me either
afternoon at Friar Lawrence’s
4 - But its got to be worth a try, like Juliet said earlier
Nurse – Ok when she was on the balcony “What’s in a name? That which we
call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet”
(All Exit)
1 - I literally have no clue what that means
(Narrators Enter)
4 - Well she’s basically saying that a name doesn’t mean
1 - This is so exciting! I’ve never been to a wedding
anything, its just what we call people and she loves Romeo
before!
because of who he is, not who his family are.
4 - Well we aren’t supposed to be at this one, it’s a secret
1 - Well I think its lovely
wedding
2 - Yeah me too.
3 - Why is it a secret? I think it’s really nice when two
people who love each other get married 3 - Well we better get ready for the wedding

1 - So do I! I reckon these two will get married (pick a boy 1 - What needs sorting?
and girl on the front row and point at them)
4 - Well first you need to give out these flags for people
2 - Don’t be mean to wave (give flags to the children)

4 - The reason it’s a secret is because the Montagues and 3 - And you guys can have some confetti to throw when
the Capulets hate each other and would never allow them to they walk back up the aisle afterwards
marry
4 - And finally, when Friar Lawrence tells you, it’s
3 - So why is Friar Lawrence letting it happen then? important to give the happy couple a big cheer

2 - Lets practice that (get each side to cheer, then all

together)
3 - Hey here comes the Friar, looks like we are set to go! (Enter Benvolio and Mercutio. Tybalt enters from
opposite side)
(Narrators join the audience to cue them in the right
places) Tybalt – (angry) Where’s Romeo?

Mercutio – You want some of me?

Act 2 Scene 4 Tybalt – No I want Romeo

(Enter Romeo)

(Enter Friar Lawrence, Romeo and Juliet) Romeo – My good friends

Juliet – My Nurse told me to meet you here to be married Tybalt – Bring it on Romeo

Friar Lawrence – Are you ready? Romeo – I will not fight you

Romeo – ready Mercutio – (Wanting a fight) come on Romeo

Juliet – Ready Romeo – No. I have my reasons

Friar Lawrence – Okay all done, you‘re married. You can Benvolio – We should listen to Romeo
now kiss the bride.
Mercutio – Fine I’ll fight him.
(Romeo and Juliet look at each other, then at Friar
Tybalt – Bring it on
Lawrence, shaking their heads ‘No’)
(Tybalt and Mercutio Fight)
Friar Lawrence – OK fine, you can shake hands then.
Romeo – No!
(Romeo and Juliet look at each other again and decide
to high five instead, audience cheer and throw confetti as they all exit) (Tybalt stabs Mercutio)

Romeo – Mercutio!
Act 3 Scene 1 Mercutio – A Plague on both your houses

(Mercutio Dies)
Romeo – Nooooooooo, Mercutio! Aghhh… Tybalt, I’m Friar Lawrence – Yeah, I heard, not too good of you, The
really upset, I mean REALLY upset. prince says you are banished from the kingdom.

Benvolio – Romeo, remember what you said about not Romeo – Noooooooo… I will never be able to see my
fighting Juliet again!

Tybalt – Oh yeah! (Romeo collapses to the floor crying melodramatically,

Nurse enters)
Romeo – Yeah!
Nurse – Friar have you seen Romeo?
(Romeo and Tybalt fight, Tybalt is killed)
(Friar points to the ground)
Benvolio – Romeo, away, be gone.
Nurse – Oh, yeah, pretty obvious and a bit pathetic. Hey
(Romeo exits, Enter Prince, Lord and Lady Capulet and
lover boy, Juliet is pretty upset.
Lord and Lady Montague)
Romeo – Nooooooo… (Romeo tries to stab himself but
Prince – What in the world is happening here? Why are
fails miserably, Nurse takes the sword away)
there dead bodies on the ground all over MY streets? Huh?
Friar Lawrence – Why don’t you go see Juliet and then
Benvolio – Well Tybalt killed Mercutio, then Romeo killed
leave town.
Tybalt
Romeo – (Excited) Cool
Prince – Fine then Romeo is banished from Verona, and
clean up this mess! (All Exit)

(All Exit, Benvolio drags bodies off stage) (Narrators Enter)

1 - Woah! Lots of things seem to have happened really

fast!
Act 3 Scene 2
2 - You’re telling me, it’s all gone a little bit crazy!

3 - I wonder if it’s always like this in Verona?

(Enter Romeo and Friar Lawrence)
4 - As long as the Montague’s and the Capulets keep
Romeo – Friar, I did a bad thing
fighting I guess it will be
1 - But Friar Lawrence was hoping that the wedding 3 - (Getting upset) I don’t know if I can watch this, it’s just
between Romeo and Juliet would stop all of that too sad!

4 - That’s the problem with secret weddings, no-one (Narrators Exit)

knows they have happened, so how would Tybalt know that his
cousin has married Romeo
Act 4 Scene 1
1 - That’s true and that’s why Romeo couldn’t tell
Mercutio the reason he didn’t want to fight, because he was
trying to keep the marriage a secret
(Enter Romeo and Juliet)
4 - Exactly! He didn’t want to fight Tybalt, but when he
killed his best friend like that he just got angry and took revenge Juliet – Oh Romeo

1 - So now Romeo is going to have to leave Verona before Romeo – Oh Juliet, It’s almost morning, and I must leave
The Prince finds him because he will be killed too for what he has Juliet – Do you have to?
done
Romeo – I must be gone and live or stay and die. And I
2 - But what about Juliet? really prefer the going and living thing
4 - Well he’s going to have to leave her behind (Nurse Enters)
2 - That’s terrible, poor Juliet Nurse – Whoa dude, you’re still here, you better leave
3 - I know its proper emo isn’t it soon, and when I say “soon” I mean NOW! (Nurse shoves out
Romeo)
1 - Is there anything they can do to sort it all out?
(Romeo exits, Lady and Lord Capulet enter)
4 - I doubt it, the feud has been going on for centuries,
the families really hate each other Lady Capulet – Oh, by the way Juliet, you’re dad says you
have to marry Paris
2 - So what happens now?
Juliet – I don’t want to
4 - Well Romeo has gone to find Juliet so he can say
goodbye Lord Capulet – What! You will do what I say

Juliet – Fine!
(All exit but Juliet) Friar John – OK

Juliet – I need to talk with Friar Lawrence (Friar John exits)

(Friar Lawrence enters) Friar Lawrence – Good luck

Friar Lawrence – You called? (Friar Lawrence Exits)

Juliet – I want to stay with Romeo, what can I do? Juliet – to drink or not to drink, that is the question. Well
bottoms up (Juliet drinks the potion and passes out)
Friar Lawrence – No Problem, Just take this herbal
cocktail. You will look like you are dead, and when they take you (Nurse enters)
to the morgue, your Romeo will be there waiting. (Calling
Nurse – Rise and shine my dear. Juliet wake up. JULIET.
offstage) Friar John!
NOOOOOO
(Friar John Enters)
(Lady and Lord Capulet, Friar Lawrence and Paris enter)
Friar John – Yes
All – Ahhhhhh
Friar Lawrence – I need you to send a message to Romeo
Lord Capulet – My daughter
Friar John – Okay
Friar Lawrence – (To himself) Wow that was quick
(Friar John Exits)
Lord Capulet – What?
Friar Lawrence – FRIAR JOHN!
Friar Lawrence – (Faking a cough) I said, I feel sick. Now
(Friar John Enters) we need to take her to the tomb

Friar John – Yes (They pick up Juliet and carry her offstage, all exit)

Friar Lawrence – You don’t know what the message is yet (Narrators Enter)

Friar John – Oh, Ok well, what is the message? 1 - O M G Juliet is dead!

Friar Lawrence – Tell Romeo to meet Juliet at the Tomb 4 - No she isn’t
tomorrow evening
2 - She is! Look they are taking her away to a tomb, she’s 2 - Well let’s hope that Friar John gets to Romeo first then
dead because if he speaks to anyone else they might tell him that Juliet
is dead, even though she isn’t!
4 - No she isn’t
3 - That would be really bad luck if that happens!
1 - She is, she just drank the poison and now she’s dead
on the floor (big cry) (Narrators Exit)

4 - You don’t listen do you

1 - (sniffing) what….do……you….mean?

4 - It’s all a cunning plan!

1 - Really?

4 - Yeah the poison that Friar Lawrence gave Juliet isn’t Act 5 Scene 1
really a poison, it’s a special potion that just makes it seem like
she’s dead but she’s actually in a very, very deep sleep
(Enter Romeo and Balthasar)
1 - So she’s not dead? (Getting happier)
Romeo – (Very happy) Balthasar my servant, the day is
4 - No, but everyone thinks she is, so Friar John has gone
beautiful! How are you today?
to tell Romeo to got to Juliet’s tomb, which is where they will put
her because they thinks she’s dead, then when she wakes up Balthasar – Hmm, OK.
from her deep sleep Romeo and her can sneak away and go off
and be happy together. Romeo – Just OK? But the day is beautiful

3 - That’s really clever Balthasar – Well sir, ummmm, I have some bad news,
really bad news.
2 - I know right!
Romeo – Really, No good news?
4 - But it’s really important to keep it a secret because
everyone needs to believe that she’s dead for the plan to work Balthasar – Nope

Romeo – Not even just a little?

Balthasar – Nope, nada, and no. 3 - Romeo thinks that Juliet is dead for real

Romeo – What’s the bad news? 2 - And he’s going to see her in her tomb

Balthasar – Juliet is dead. 1 - Worse than that he’s taken with him some poison to
drink
Romeo – Nooooo… I am going to get some poison and kill
myself tonight in her tomb 4 - Real poison this time, not the fake stuff that Friar
Lawrence makes
(All Exit)
1 - Do you think he will get there in time to rescue them?

2 - I don’t know, I hope so

Act 5 Scene 2
4 - Well look, here comes Romeo now

Friar Lawrence – Hello Friar John, were you able to
deliver the letter to Romeo? (All Exit)

Friar John – Well I tried, but it just didn’t happen, so I got

a burger and fries instead, want one?
Act 5 Scene 3
Friar Lawrence - What! That’s not good. Bad, very bad.
Poor Juliet, closed in a dead man’s tomb. I have to go and save
them. (Juliet is lying dead on the ground, enter Romeo)
(All Exit) Romeo – I will enter her tomb and kill myself next to my

give Romeo the message Paris – My dear Romeo Montague, what are you doing
here, disturbing a Capulet? I am putting you under arrest!

Romeo – This is a bad time Paris. Tempt not a desperate (Enter Prince, Lord Capulet, Lord Montague and Friar

(Enter Friar Lawrence)
Prince – I will investigate and find out what happened
Friar Lawrence – Oh shoot I am too late here

(Juliet awakes) Friar Lawrence – I think I might know

Juliet – Oh comfortable Friar, where is my lord? Prince – Tell us or die

Friar Lawrence – Yeah, well there was a slight problem Friar Lawrence – Whoa! OK, OK… you see she liked him,

Juliet – Noooooooo! Lord Capulet and Lord Montague – What!!!

Friar Lawrence – I hear people coming, let’s go. Friar Lawrence – Anyway, they got married, Juliet faked

Song ‘You Got a Friend in Me’ Jayden Rodrigues & 4 – So now the play has finished its traditional for all of
Natasha Vella the actors to perform a dance called a ‘Bergomask Dance’

(All exit) 1 – Do we have to join in?

(Narrators Enter) 4 – Well we have been part of the play and all the actors
have to take part
3 – Is that the end of the story?
2- I’m a bit scared, I don’t do dance!
4 - Yeah
4 – You will be fine, plus it’s meant to be fun, come on
2 – Wow that’s really sad!
everyone let’s give all the performers a big round of applause.
4 – I know, that’s why it’s called a Tragedy

1 – Hang on though, I thought that because of what

BERGOMASK DANCE
happened to Romeo and Juliet the families decided to stop
fighting, so that’s kind of happy because its good news for the city
of Verona

4 – Exactly! (looking at 1) See, she isn’t that stupid after

all! Like the Nurse says in the prologue at the beginning ‘Doth
with their Death bury their parents strife’. Which means that
even though Romeo and Juliet aren’t alive anymore they stopped
lots of other people from dying, which has to be a good thing!

3 – So it is a little bit sad but not really, really, sad.

2 – I feel a better now

1 – Good cause I didn’t want to listen to you crying all the

way home!

2 – Don’t be mean!

3 – I haven’t seen any Shakespeare before but I enjoyed

that, it was fun
