Level 2 Unit 1 Fluency Intervention

By: Ms King in Second

This Unit 1 packet contains 15 targeted phonics passages and


3 Oral Reading Fluency probes. The Unit 1 packet includes the
following concepts: beginning blends, three letter blends,
ending blends, digraphs, the tch trigraph, digraph blends,
and the qu pattern. Passages include no more than 10 “sight
words” each. Each passage builds on concepts from on the
passage before it, so be sure to use the packet in order from
beginning to end. Enjoy!

WAYS TO USE THIS PRODUCT

❑ Phonological Awareness: Read the passages out loud to students and have
them identify the target sound.

❑ Word Recognition: Have student identify specific words within the passage
by highlighting, circling, underlining, etc.

❑ Progress Monitoring: Use the tracking sheet (first page) and Oral Reading
Fluency passages at the end of the packet to test students fluency at the
beginning, middle, and end of the unit to assess growth

❑ Small Group: Review the trick words at the top of each passage. Have
students preview the passage for decodable words following the target
concept. Mark up the text, discuss tricky words, or simply read for fluency.

❑ Homework: Send passages home with students to practice for nightly


review.

❑ Independent Work: Use the passages as an independent work station by


having students read to self or to a partner, list words following the target
concept, or drawing illustrations to match each passage

Beth, Quin, and Max went on a trip to the pond on a thin path 15

by the tracks. They had to get to the pond quick! Beth had a 29

thin stick to drop into the pond. Plop! Quin got a net. She thrust 43

the net off the dock. She felt a tug. “Did you catch a crab?” 57

said Max. “Not yet,” said Quin. The net did not have a crab. It 71

had a shrimp and six red fish. “I got a big shrimp!” said Quin. 85

Max went to help his pal tug the net up. Beth went to the shed. 100

She got a cup. “You can put your shrimp in the cup,” she said. 114

Max had to pluck the wet shrimp from the net and drop it into 128

the cup. “Got it!” he said. Quin got the rest of the fish. “I got a 144

the path in a big red sled. The sun was up, and the kids had so 30

much fun! Mom said to Dad, “I do not see Gus the cat.” Dad 44

had to check in the shed. Gus was not in the shed. Gus was 58

not on the step. Gus was not in the grass. Crash! There was a 73

big yelp from the back. Gus the black cat sat on a rug in the 87

back with a cup of milk which fell from the shelf. The cup had 101

split. Milk was on the rug and the quilt on the bed was wet. 115

“Gus!” said Mom, “did you drench the rug with milk?” Gus ran 127

and hid by the desk. Dad got a dish cloth to scrub the splotch 141
