Lesson Plans
• Have students write what they know about Diwali in the
“K” column on their Diwali K/W/L Chart (included in packet).
Then, write what they would like to learn in the “W”
portion. They will complete the ”L” side after reading the
text.

• Together, create a class K/W/L anchor chart including


students’ ideas from their K/W/L page. Or students can
write on sticky notes and add to a class K/W/L anchor
chart.

• Print or Project the Diwali Text.

• Read aloud to the class.

• Ask the text dependent questions.

• Have students complete the “L” side of their Diwali K/W/L

Art Project
Option 1: Students create a diya lantern
Materials: salt dough, clay, or other air-hardening dough.
Instructions:
• Flatten a large round circle of clay.
• Place a tea-light candle (or battery operated light) in the
center of the clay.
• “Pinch” up the clay around the candle to form a pot. The
pot could also be shaped like a leaf, flower or bird if desired.
• Once dry, decorate with colorful glitter, sequins and
sparkles

Option 2: Students create a rangoli design


Materials: paper plates and a variety of colored paper.
Instructions:
• Tear paper into small squares.
• Glue squares onto paper plate, creating designs and
patterns

Diwali is celebrated by Hindus all over the world. It is popular
in India. Diwali is a five day holiday. It signifies the Hindu New
Year and is celebrated sometime between the middle of
October and the middle of November.

Diwali is known as the festival of lights. On each
night of the celebration, people light many candles
and oil lamps called diyas. Light is a symbol for

People decorate for Diwali by making colorful
patterns called rangoli. These decorations are often
made with colored rice, colored sand, or flower

People eat many sweet treats during Diwali called
mithai. They also eat dried fruit and nuts.

People light fireworks, firecrackers, and sparklers.
Diwali is also a time where family and friends
