Health, safety, and security in the workplace

Ensuring the health, safety, and
security of all people in a hospitality and
tourism organization is the single most
important concern of all managers. Whilst it is
important that a business makes a profit, at
the end of the day, it is only money. There is
no quicker way to lose the confidence and
patronage of people, than by placing people at
harm.
A sad yet alarming fact is that 75% of workplace accidents and injuries are
inevitable.
By having sound health, safety, and security practices in place, the pain,
frustration, and costs associated with injuries can be reduced, to the benefit
of all people.

People do not just relate to paying customers of our organization, it also

This manual looks at how to ensure the health, safety, and security of all
people through:
 Establishing management commitment
 Consultation with external experts
 Identifying rights, obligations, and responsibilities
Implementing policies and procedures
 Ensuring suitable safety and security resources
 Training staff
 Identifying all potential risks and hazards
 Assessing risks and hazards
 Controlling risk and hazards
Before we explore how to ensure all patrons can enjoy a hospitality
organization safely and securely, it is important to understand the
following key phrases:
 Health – the physical and mental state of a person with freedom
from disease or ailment
 Safety – being free from the occurrence or risk of injury, danger,
or loss
 Security – something that secures or makes safe with freedom
from
In summary health, safety and security aim to protect the physical safety
and security of the business (profit, reputation, and liability), assets, staff,
guests, and the public from injuries or illness, or loss of property, that may
occur as a result of a breakdown in workplace actions.
6 Steps to Creating and Maintaining a Safe Workplace
1. ELIMINATE POTENTIAL HAZARDS.
 Keep the workplace free from recognized physical and chemical
hazards and make sure it complies with OSHA standards, rules, and
regulations. Use your digital signage systems to remind employees
about proper body mechanics, forklift safety, safe backing, what PPE
is necessary, and ways they can avoid slips, trips, and falls.
2. MAKE SURE ALL WORKERS ARE PROPERLY TRAINED.
 The organization must provide all workers with safety training using
language they can understand. This training should be given to all
new workers, with refresher courses offered to (or required) for
existing workers or when workers change jobs (within the company).
Use your electronic message boards to reinforce safety training,
serving it up in bite-sized messages.

3. ENSURE WORKERS HAVE THE PROPER EQUIPMENT.
 Make sure employees have and use safe tools and equipment and
properly maintain this equipment. Workplace digital signage is an
effective tool for reinforcing injury prevention. Raise awareness around
proper handling of hazardous materials, lock-out tag-out, and
machine guarding.

4. PROVIDE VISUAL SAFETY AIDS AND MESSAGES.

 Use color codes, posters, labels, and/or signs to warn employees of
potential hazards. Additionally, place OSHA posters in all work and
recreational areas – and use digital signage to broadcast important
safety information, updates, and messages. For example, employers
can display their safety recordable using automated counters. This
visual aide displays real-time data and reminds employees to stay
safe.
5. CREATE A SAFETY COMMITTEE – AND HOLD MONTHLY SAFETY
MEETINGS.
 Establish a workplace health and safety committee made up of
workers from different departments, from senior management to shop-
floor-based employees. The committee should meet at least once a
month and keep employees and senior management informed about
safety topics, inspections, injury and illness statistics, and other
safety-related issues. Use your digital signage systems to share key
safety updates to the entire workforce.
6. MAKE SAFETY FUN.
 While safety is no game, one way to help incorporate safety into
company culture is to make learning about safety fun. Use your
workplace digital signage to create safety-themed trivia, quizzes, and
videos of safety dos and don’ts. Friendly competition including prizes,
and chances for company-wide recognition are great motivators. By
adding a little fun, there's a higher chance that employees will stay
engaged, retain the information, and therefore help prevent accidents.
