a. (x − 4)(x + 2)(3x − 2)

b. (9h − k)2

2. Solve the equation (2y − 5)2 = 11.

3. Solve x 2 − 7x − 8 = 0 by factorisation.

5. Express −x − x 2 in the form - (x + r)2 + u .

6. Solve the equation.

4x − 1 16
=
4 4x − 1
7. Solve the equation x 2 − 10x − 9 = 0 by
a. completing the square

b. quadratic formula

8. Sketch the following equations. indicate their xintercepts, y intercepts and turning point.

a. y = (x + 4)(x + 2)

b. y = (x − 2)2 + 1

9. Solve for the coordinates of the x-intercepts, y-intercepts and turning point of
y = x 2 + 3x − 4. Hence, sketch y = x 2 + 3x − 4.

10. Find the range of values of x which 2x − 3 ≤ 7 and 2x + 1 ≥ − 3x − 4. Represent the

common solution on the number line.

11. The owner of a piece of land wishes to build a fence along its perimeter.
On a map with a scale of 1 : 2000, the piece of land is in the shape of a right-angled triangle
with sides of length x cm, (x +6 ) cm and (2x+5) cm. Find the actual length in metres, of the fence
needed.

12. There are 35 $2-notes and $10-notes in an envelope. If there are more $2-notes than $10-
notes and the total value of all the notes is at least $190, nd the possible numbers of $2-notes in
the envelope.
