• Reflect on the importance of K to 12 curriculum to the improvement of Philippine Education.

So Let us define first what is reforms. When you hear


the word reforms, what is it means? Anyone? (Student 8)

Educational reform is the term for the goal of changing
public education in terms of educational practice.
I know all of us are familiar of K to 12 Program right?
Because all of us here have passed through it.

What is K to 12 Curriculum Program?

The government is currently implementing a program


called K to 12. In this program, children who have not
attended kindergarten will not be admitted to first grade
as the first step in its implementation.And the other is
the two years extra in High school called Senior High
school.

In the implementation of the K-12 program, many of


us still disagree with its implementation and some of us
agree with it.

We have different views on the purpose of
implementing K-12, but I hope that whatever the 4
government’s true purpose in implementing it is for the
benefit of Filipinos.

Now let’s talk about the Salient Features of the K to 12
program. .
When we say Salient, it means important, noticeable,
remarkable like that..

1.Strengthening Early Childhood Education


(Universal Kindergarten)

First we have what we call the, Strengthening Early


Childhood Education. At the age of 5 years old,
children starts schooling and are given the chance to
slowly adjust to formal education. In Kinder Garten,
students learn the alphabet, numbers, shapes, and colors
through songs and dances.

2.Making the Curriculum relevant to learners


(Contextualized and Enhancement)

Examples, activities, poems,stories and illustration are


based on local culture, history, and reality. This makes
lessons relevant to the learners and easy to understand.

3.Building Proficiency through Languages


(Mother Tongue Based Multilingual Education)

Students are able to learn best through their first


language, the mother tongue.
There are 12 Mother Tongue Languages have been
introduced by school year 2012-2013.

4.Ensuring Integrated and Seamless Learning


(Spiral Progression)

The subject are taught form the simplest concepts to


more complicated concepts through grade levels. As
early as elementary, students gain knowledge in areas
such as biology, chemistry, geometry, algebra etc. This
ensures a mastery of knowledge and skills after each
level.

5.Gearing up for the Future


(Senior High School)

Senior High School is two years of specialized upper


secondary education; students may choose a
specialization based on aptitude, interests, and school
capacity.
The choice of career track will define the content of the
subjects a student will take in Grades 11 and 12. SHS
subjects fall under specific Tracks.

What track/strands do we have in Shs class?

General Academic Strand (GAS)
Humanities and Social Sciences
(HUMSS)
Science, Technology, Engineering,
and Mathematics (STEM)
Accountancy, Business, and
Management (ABM)
Technical-Vocational-Livelihood
(TVL)

Yes. Under the Academic Track we have the GAS,


HUMSS, STEM, and ABM.
And under the TVL we have the Home Economics,
ICT, Agricultural etc.
SHS CORE CURRICULUM
There are seven Learning Areas under the Core
Curriculum. These are Languages, Literature,
Communication, Mathematics, Philosophy, Natural
Sciences, and Social Sciences. Current content from
some General Education subjects are embedded in the
SHS curriculum.

E. Generalization
Before we officially end our lesson for today, let’s have
