What is an Accommodation?

 It is a facility that regularly or


occasionally provides
accommodation for tourists,
such as hotels, campsites,
short-term furnished
accommodation, holiday
homes, resorts, holiday
centres for children and
young people, youth hostels
and refuges, etc.
CLASSIFICATION OF
ACCOMMODATION
ESTABLISHMENT
 Hotels are typically larger establishments that offer a range of amenities and facilities, such as
restaurants, bars, conference rooms, and fitness centres. They often have multiple room
options, including single rooms, double rooms, suites, and family rooms. Hotels also tend to
have high standards of service and cleanliness.
Motel accommodations are similar to hotels, but they usually have fewer amenities and
are geared more towards travellers on the road who require a quick and convenient
place to stay for the night. Sometimes, Motels are located near highways or major
roadways.
Flats, also known as apartments or holiday/vacation rentals, are self-contained units
with separate living areas, kitchens, and bedrooms. They offer guests more space
and privacy and are a popular choice for families or groups travelling together.
Bed & breakfasts
B&Bs are smaller establishments that offer a more personalized and homey experience. They
typically offer a few guest rooms, frequently with a shared bathroom, and provide guests
with a breakfast meal included in the price of their stay. Bed & Breakfast are typically
located in residential areas or historic buildings.
Resort refer to full service accommodation located in a more natural and
relaxed environment, equipped with reception and guestrooms, generally
offering private facilities, with an onsite restaurant, room and bar service.

Systems
HOTEL GRADING SYSTEM

• a “Star System” is used to classify hotels. Others award flag, crown or rosette
instead of a star when they classify or grade a hotel.

• The criteria for grading vary among countries but the major considerations
include the size of the hotel, type of facilities and the quality of services.
A total of 1000 points have been set as the
maximum number of points that can be achieved
by Hotels, Resorts, and Apartment Hotels.

To obtain higher stars, progressively higher service


and facility quality, facility condition and improved
business practices like environmental management,
which are determined by a points system should be
provided across all areas.
Star Grading Total Score (Hotel, Resort, Apartel)

1 star 251 – 400 points

2 star 401 – 550 points

3 star 551 – 700 points

4 star 701 – 850 points

5 star 851 – 1000 points


HOTEL CLASSIFICATION
The Basis of Classification
A hotel may be classified under the following criteria

1. Size
2. Plan
3. Location
4. Length of Stay
5. Ownership
6. Type of Accommodation
7. Facilities
1. Size
• does not refer to the dimension of the property or the height of the
building
• It refers to the number of rooms held by the hotel.
• Such rooms do not include the offices and other area that are related to
the operation of the hotel

Referred as It means they have


Small Maximum 25 room
Medium Minimum 26 rooms and maximum 100 rooms
Large Minimum 101rooms and maximum 300 rooms
Very Large More than 300 rooms
2. PLANS
Plans mean a tariff rate for the services given by the hotel. They are commonly known
a meal plans. Generally, there are 5 types of plans and the services they include are
as below:

European Plan This includes only the room
Continental Plan Room + Continental Breakfast
Bermuda Plan Room + American Breakfast
American Plan Room + 2*minor meals and 2**principal
meals
Modified Amrican Plan Room +Any one of the *minor
meals+Anyone of the **principal meals
3. Location

The location of hotels can have a significant effect on its patronage. Based on locations, hotels
can be classified as:
a. Airport hotel
b. Downtown or Suburban hotel
c. Resort hotels
2. According to Price, Layout and Facilities
a. Economy room is designed for an economical rate usually short of some standard
facilities like air conditioner, television and other amenities.

b. Standard room is sold at moderate rate, equipped with standard facilities and
amenities like aircon, private toilet and bath, toiletries, television, bed, nite table,
coffee table and other basic amenities.

c. De Luxe room is more luxurious and spacious with amenities of superior quality, sold at
much higher price than the standard room.

Double room: double rooms are assigned
to two people; expect one double bed, or
two twin beds depending on the hotel.

Single rooms are assigned to one


person or a couple.
It may have one or more beds, but
the size of the bed depends on the
hotel.
•Triple room: as the name might
suggest, this room is equipped for
three people to stay. The room will
have a combination of either three
twin beds, one double bed and a
twin, or two double beds.

The family room is designed to be a


place where family and guests gather
for group recreation like talking,
reading, watching TV, and other family
activities.
Connecting rooms consist of two or more rooms
with entrance doors from the outside door
between them.

Studio room has a studio bed or a


couch which can be converted into a
bed. It may also be called an
executive room.
Suite room has a parlor or a living room connected to one or more full sized bedrooms. It is
equipped with luxury amenities and is sold at a higher price than standard rooms.
Types of Hotel Suites
2. Corner suite is a suite room that is
located on the corner of the hotel
building.

1. Junior suite a room with a bed and a


sitting area. It is also called a mini suite.
3. Penthouse suite is a suite usually located on
the penthouse or top floor of the building.

4. Executive suite is a suite designed for


a top executive, with facilities and
amenities of superior quality.
5. Hospitality suite is more than a sleeping room. It is
designed to include a function room or parlor for
entertaining guest’s visitors.

Type of Hotel Guests
Terminologies Used to Describe Various Types of Guests

1. VIP- Very Important Person, refers to a well renowned guest like a high ranking official
or an executive who warrants special treatment and handling.
2. VVIP-Very, Very Important Person, is a highly renowned person deserves extra special
treatment like dignitaries, ambassadors, etc.
3. FIT- Free Independent Traveler/ Foreign Individual Tourist, refers to a tourist or a traveler
who is travelling alone or is not with any tour group.
4. FOC- Free of Charge, or complimentary
5. JOINER -is a person joining another guest in the same room.
