What I Need to Know

In Mathematics, you might have encountered terms, expressions and

equations very often. As both combine number and/or variables, people often
misunderstand an expression from an equation. However, these two
mathematical terms are not the same. A big difference lies in their
arrangement. That explains what they represent. The best way to differentiate
algebraic expression from equation is to go through this module.

This module is all about Differentiating Algebraic Expressions and Equations.

After going through this module, you are expected to differentiate algebraic
expressions from equations. Specifically, you will:
1. state the difference between algebraic expression and equation;
2. illustrate algebraic expressions and equations; and
3. appreciate the importance of algebraic expressions and equations in
real life situations.

What Is It

Difference between Algebraic Expression and Equation

Algebraic Expression
In Mathematics, an algebraic expression is defined as a phrase that
groups together numbers (constant), letters (variables) or their combination
joined by operations ( +, -, x, /), to respect the value of something.
It does not contain any equal to ( = ) sign , so , it does not show any
relationship. Hence, it has nothing on the left or right side.
An algebraic expression can be simplified by combining like terms or it
can be evaluated, replacing values in place of the variables to arrive at a
numerical value.
Examples of an Algebraic Expressions
 2x – 4  -¼y+ 7
 2y  4x(x + y)
 (x2 +2)(x – 3)
Equation
In Mathematics, the term equation means a statement of equality. It is
a sentence in which two expressions are placed one to another. In order to
satisfy the equation, it is important to determine the value of its variable; which
is known as the solution.
An equation can be conditional or an identity. If the equation is
conditional, then the equality of the two expressions is true for a definite
value of a variable involved. However, if the equation is an identity, then the
equality is true to all values held by the variable.
Examples of an Equation
 4x + 2 = 8  2l + 2w = p
 a+b+c=0  5x3 + 3 = 2

 x-¾=5

6
To sum it up, the points given below summarize the differences between
expression and equation.

value.

The explanation above clearly shows the big difference between these
two mathematical concepts. An algebraic expression does not reveal any
relationship while an equation does. In the case of an algebraic expression
there is no equal sign. So there is no definite solution and cannot end up
displaying the value of a variable involved. While an equation contains an
equal sign; therefore, it shows a solution and end up representing the value of
the variable.
