1.0 INTRODUCTION
The proposed SewageTreatment Plant includes 3 underground circular concrete tanks, and others
are steel tanks those are rest on ground.
It includes 1 raw sewage sump tank of size of diameter 6.0m x 4.0m deep which collects the sewage
sump. Then the filtered through screen chamber and oil & grease chamber. After this the fluid is
transferred to a equilization tank of size of diameter 5.0m x 2.9m deep. At final stage after all
treatment process finished the water is collected at Treated water tank of size of diameter 4.0m x
2.5m deep, 1

BASE SLAB DESIGN

Water table is well below GL & hence there is no uplift

Depth of water at mid of tank = 1.8 m

Cover to tension reinforcement, c d' = 40 mm

Thickness of slab t = 350 mm
Effective Depth, d = 292 mm
Assumed dia of rebar ɸrebar = 12 mm

Self wt of slab = 8.75 kN/sq.m

Total udl on slab = 26.75 kN/sq.m

Self weight of tank

Total Load coming on the Soil, (wall + slab weight) DL = 893 kN
(self weight of tank)
Check for Buoyancy:
Downward Force = Self Weight of Pit , W = 893 kN
(Min Restoring force,W for Pit Inside empty conditions)

Height of water table from base bottom , H = 2.30m (assumed)

Total uplift force, Fu = gw * H * π * r2 = 650.31 kN

Factor of Safety (FOS)S 1.37 > 1.2

Hence Safe against Buoyancy

Load Combination for Bearing Pressure Check

Load Combination 1 ( DL ) = Self Weight = 893 kN

Area of base = 34 m2
(DL) = 893 / 34
= 26.11 kN/m2

Load Combination 2 ( DL + Water load )

Water Load = 19.01 kN
(DL + Water load) = 26.1 + 19
= 45.11 kN/m2

BASE SLAB DESIGN

Water table is well below GL & hence there is no uplift

Depth of water at mid of tank = 2.6 m

Cover to tension reinforcement, c d' = 40 mm

Thickness of slab t = 250 mm
Effective Depth, d = 195 mm
Assumed dia of rebar ɸrebar = 10 mm

Self wt of slab = 6.25 kN/sq.m

Total udl on slab = 32.25 kN/sq.m

Self weight of tank

Total Load coming on the Soil, (wall + slab weight) DL = 447 kN
(self weight of tank)
Check for Buoyancy:
Downward Force = Self Weight of Pit , W = 447 kN
(Min Restoring force,W for Pit Inside empty conditions)

Height of water table from base bottom , H = 0.5 m (assumed)

Total uplift force, Fu = gw * H * π * r2 = 98.17 kN

Factor of Safety (FOS)S 4.56 > 1.2

Hence Safe against Buoyancy
Load Combination for Bearing Pressure Check
Load Combination 1 ( DL ) = Self Weight = 447 kN
Area of base = 24 m2
(DL) = 447 / 24
= 18.83 kN/m2

Load Combination 2 ( DL + Water load )

Water Load = 4.13 kN
(DL + Water load) = 18.8 + 4.1
= 22.96 kN/m2

Maximum Gross Bearing Pressure = 22.96 kN/m2

Maximum Gross Safe Bearing Capacity of Soil = = 150 kN/m2
Hence, Safe against Bearing Pressure

BASE SLAB DESIGN

Water table is well below GL & hence there is no uplift

Depth of water at mid of tank = 2m

Cover to tension reinforcement, c d' = 40 mm

Thickness of slab t = 250 mm
Effective Depth, d = 195 mm
Assumed dia of rebar ɸrebar = 10 mm

Self wt of slab = 6.25 kN/sq.m

Total udl on slab = 26.25 kN/sq.m

Self weight of tank

Total Load coming on the Soil, (wall + slab weight) DL = 308 kN
(self weight of tank)
Check for Buoyancy:
Downward Force = Self Weight of Pit , W = 308 kN
(Min Restoring force,W for Pit Inside empty conditions)

Height of water table from base bottom , H = 0.5 m (assumed)

Total uplift force, Fu = gw * H * π * r2 = 62.83 kN

Factor of Safety (FOS)S 4.90 > 1.2

Hence Safe against Buoyancy

Load Combination for Bearing Pressure Check

Load Combination 1 ( DL ) = Self Weight = 308 kN

Area of base = 16 m2
(DL) = 308 / 16
= 19.37 kN/m2

Load Combination 2 ( DL + Water load )

Water Load = 3.95 kN
(DL + Water load) = 19.4 + 4
= 23.32 kN/m2

a/b α
1.00 0.0138
1.20 0.0188
0.96 0.013
α = 0.013
α is taken from Roark's Formula 7Th Ed, Table 11.4 Case 8a: All edges fixed. Uniformly over entire plate
Maximum deflection of plate Ymax =
α x Pd x a4 / (E x ta3)
Modulus of Elasticity E =
2.0E+05 N/mm2
2.0E+08 kPa
Ymax = 1.187 mm
Ymax < 0.5 ta
1.187 < 2.5
Hence, adopted thickness is satisfactory - no stiffener is required
Minimum required moment of inertia, for bottom stiffener (Beam fixed a both ends)
Imin_R1 =12 xα x Pd x a3 / x E x ta/2
= 1.29 mm4
= 0.00013 cm4
Provided horizontal stiffener Flat 50 x 6
Moment inertia of used stiffener Ixx = Iyy = 0.0025 cm4
Hence, adopted Vertical stiffener is sufficient
