UR20-4AI-TC-DIAG (1315710000)

Measuring higher voltages and currents with u-remote

Abstract:
This application note describes how higher voltages and currents can be measured using
UR20-4AI-TC-DIAG in differential input voltage mode and external resistors being
integrated in Weidmüller terminal blocks. By setting the input voltage range and choosing
the right values for the resistors an application suitable range can be defined for all by
Weidmüller supported fieldbuses.

2 Example Application
2.1 Circuit diagram and wiring to measure up to 45V / 10A

The above picture shows a circuit and all needed components for a 0…45V / 10A measuring
application. Inside the terminal block A2T 2.5 EM2 D/0 voltage divider resistors R1 = 1.1 kΩ and
R2 = 100 kΩ are soldered for the voltage measurement. Inside the terminal block A2T 2.5 EM1
D/0 the shunt Rs = 0.005 Ω is soldered for the current measurement. The voltage at the shunt is
being measured at channel 0 (set to ± 62,5 mV) of the UR20-4AI-TC-DIAG. The voltage at R2 of
the voltage divider is being measured at channel 1 of the UR20-4AI-TC-DIAG (set to ± 500 mV).
Scaling und calculations to obtain the values in volts/ampere are realized in a PLC (CODESYS
on UC20-WL2000-AC, in this example).

2.2 Configuration of UR20-4AI-TC-DIAG

Set up the u-remote station via the integrated web browser. Connect the usb service cable to the
station and your computer, open a web browser and type in the IP address in the address field
(here: 192.168.1.202):

By clicking on the UR20-4AI-TC-DIAG the channel configuration can be set:

Channel 0 to ± 62,5 mV
Channel 1 to ± 500 mV

Settings must be saved by clicking on the coupler and the button “module parameter”.

3 Calculations / Limitations / Hints

3.1 Calculating the measured voltage
The voltages can be calculated as follows:

𝑈𝑐ℎ,𝐷
𝑈𝑐ℎ [𝑚𝑉] = ∙𝑈
32767 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑓𝑖𝑔

𝑅1 + 𝑅2
𝑈𝑚𝑒𝑠 [𝑉] = 𝑈𝑐ℎ [𝑚𝑉] ∙ ∙ 0.001
𝑅1

𝑈𝑐ℎ,𝐷 : Decimal value at channel → max. 32767 [16 Bit]

𝑈𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑓𝑖𝑔 [mV]: Channel configured input range at channel
𝑈𝑐ℎ [𝑚𝑉]: Measured value at channel in mV
𝑈𝑚𝑒𝑠 [𝑉]: Measured voltage in V

3.2 Calculating the measured current

The currents can be calculated as follows:

𝑈𝑠,𝐷
𝑈𝑠 [𝑚𝑉] = ∙𝑈
32767 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑓𝑖𝑔

𝑈𝑠 [𝑚𝑉]
𝐼𝑚𝑒𝑠 [𝐴] =
𝑅𝑠

𝑈𝑠,𝐷 : Decimal value at channel → max. 32767 [16Bit]

𝑈𝑠 [𝑚𝑉]: Voltage at shunt
𝑅𝑠: Shunt Value in Ohm
𝑈𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑓𝑖𝑔 : Channel configured input range at channel
𝐼𝑚𝑒𝑠 [𝐴]: Measured current in A

3.3 Avoiding voltage measuring error

Avoid higher load currents flowing through sense wires in order to minimize voltage measuring
error.

3.4 Max. power dissipation at resistors and terminal blocks

The maximum power dissipation at resistors used must comply to technical data:

𝑈 2 [𝑉]
𝑃𝑑𝑟 [𝑊] = = 𝐼 2 ∙ 𝑅𝑠
𝑅𝑠

The max. temperature of the terminal blocks used must comply to technical data.

3.5 Voltage Limitations

The voltage at the terminal block of the UR20-4AI-TC-DIAG is limited to 160 VDC.
The channel-to-channel voltage for the UR20-4AI-TC-DIAG is limited to ± 2 V.

3.6 Accuracy
The accuracy of this application depends on used resistors, wiring and the accuracy of the module
UR20-4AI-TC-DIAG.

In the example application above with 45 V / 10 A, the accuracy can be calculated as follows:

𝑅1 = 1100 −> 𝑅1 ∙ 1% = 11
𝑅2 = 100000 → 𝑅2 ∙ 1% = 1000
4𝐴𝐼 − 𝑇𝐶: 10𝑢𝑉 + 0,1% 𝑜𝑓 𝐼𝑛𝑝𝑢𝑡 𝑅𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒

Voltage Divider [VD]:

𝑅1
𝑇𝑦𝑝: = 0,010880317
𝑅1 + 𝑅2

𝑅1 + 11
𝑀𝑎𝑥: = 0,011100121
𝑅1 − 11 + 𝑅2 − 1000

𝑅1 − 11
𝑀𝑖𝑛: = 0,010880317
𝑅1 + 11 + 𝑅2 + 1000

4AI-TC [TC]:

𝑀𝑎𝑥: 𝑉𝐷𝑚𝑎𝑥 + 10𝑢𝑉 + (0,1% ∙ 500𝑚𝑉) = 0,50000644

𝑀𝑖𝑛: 𝑉𝐷𝑚𝑖𝑛 − 10𝑢𝑉 − (0,1% ∙ 500𝑚𝑉) = 0,48911324

Rel. accuracy for 25°C ambient temperature: ±2%

Temperature drift of resistors and UR20-4AI-TC-DIAG must be added to the overall accuracy if
temperature differs to 25°C.

3.7 Channel and Measurement Limitations

Since the channels of the UR20-4AI-TC-DIAG are not isolated, the risk for shortcuts in the
application circuit is given. Therefore, it is recommended to use the UR20-4AI-TC-DIAG for only
one combined voltage and current measurement (1 channel for current / 1 channel for voltage)
and to leave the other two channels unused.
