Unit Title: Reasoning and Proof Lesson: Laws of Syllogism and Detachment

Lesson Idea/Topic and To be able to generate conjectures using the laws.

Rational/Relevance:

Content Standards: HSG-CO.C.9 Prove theorems about lines and angles.

HSG-CO.C.10 Prove theorems about triangles.

HSG-CO.C.11 Prove theorems about parallelograms.

HSG-SRT.B.4 Prove theorems about triangles.

Standards for MP3 Construct Viable Arguments and Critique the Reasoning of Others:
Mathematical Practice:

Understandings: (Big Ideas) I can understand reasoning and proofs

Inquiry Questions: (Essential questions relating knowledge at end of the unit of instruction, select applicable questions from standard)

How can we determine objective truths about the world?

Evidence Outcomes: (Learning Targets)

● I can use inductive and deductive reasoning.

● I can identify arguments made using the law of syllogism and the law of detachment.
● I can construct conjectures using the law of syllogism and the law of detachment.
Every student will be able to: (Create your own lesson objectives from the standard using student voice)

This means: I can identify the hypothesis and conclusion of a conjecture. I can identify different laws being used in the creation of conjectures. I can write
conjectures using the laws of syllogism and detachment.

List of Assessments: (Write the number of the learning targets associated with each assessment)

● Weekly (Every monday) Check for understanding based around previously taught material
● Team Test & Individual Exam: Before Christmas Break
Planned Lesson Activities

Name and Purpose of Inductive and Deductive Reasoning

Lesson
To understand how arguments are constructed. To construct conjectures and prove/disprove them.

Approx. Time and Time: 86 mins

Materials
Materials: Smart board, test, pencils and highlighters (multicolor), and a calculator.

Anticipatory Set SEL: Would you rather discover a new planet or a lost civilization?

10 mins? Launch: “Which one doesn’t belong?” Students will compare 4 different pictures and construct conjectures about which
doesn’t belong, explaining their reasoning.

Teacher Actions Important Notes

Procedures Start by having the students take out their
2.2 notes so that they may be completed.

Start with introducing counter-examples. Do Core Vocabulary:

the first problem with them, having them ● Counter-example
come up with the numbers to test. ● Deductive Reasoning
They do one, attempting. I will go over it at
the end.

Talk about deductive reasoning.

● Law of Detachment
○ Example together
● Law of Syllogism
○ Example together → Try one

How to identify the use of Detachment vs.

Syllogism.
● 2 Examples. Color code the p q r

Pass out 2 worksheets

● More Practice →
Detachment/Syllogism
● Writing Conjectures.

Closure Allow students time to work on, and possibly complete, the two worksheets. They can ask me questions about the
problems, and how to identify different uses of the laws.
