Employer Service Learning Journal

I volunteered at a fund raiser put on through Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center to
raise money that goes toward The James Cancer Center. This event was hosted and put on by one
of the nurses in the Radiation Oncology department. The event took place at Topgolf just north
of Columbus, Ohio. Those who attended the event were treated to a lunch, then groups were
broken up into different virtual golf bayes where each player took turns hitting golf balls at the
different targets. The setup is similar to a range on a golf course, with different targets
representing different point values. Players competed in different challenges, while trying to
accrue the most total points. While one player took their turn swinging the clubs, other members
were invited to watch, compete in a silent auction, or partake in other games set up inside. My
job was assisting with the silent auction and running the games set up inside. These games
consisted of pop-a-shot, corn hole, giant checkers, and giant Jenga. Those who wished to play
the indoor games were encouraged to make a small donation prior to starting the games. All
proceeds would go to the hospital. At the end of the round, prizes were awarded to those who
came in first, second and third overall and I announced silent auction winners. The nurse that put
on the event told me the outing raised more than $12,000. It was a great experience that I was
able to share with others in my department. There were other dosimetrists, radiation therapists,
PCA’s, and physicians that helped volunteer and I enjoyed being a part of the group as we all
worked together to put on a special event.
