June 2023 - Year 10 French

Study guide for Annual Examinations

You will be assessed on the 4 skills:

Listening skills /comprehension – understanding of spoken French.


You will have three short passages to listen to and answer questions (out of 25).

Reading skills/ comprehension & Written skills. You will have three Reading
comprehensions (out of 25) and two pieces of Writing (out of 25 – one short and
one longer /5 and /20).

Talking performance / Oral: answering questions (role play)/ description of a


picture (or 2 pictures to compare) and/ or an exchange of information with prompts/
pictures to help. Each student will have three short tasks to complete for the oral.
It will be out of 25.

The exams will cover all topics covered in Yr. 9 and 10 with an emphasis on the
main 2 themes seen this year.

What do I need to learn?

Everything we have learned and seen in class (Lesson Starter/ vocabulary lists, new
vocabulary from activities/ exercises, grammar….) and at home (homework)…But a
gentle reminder to also go over what you have learned in Year 7 (eg: numbers, days of
the week, months, verb endings in the present tense), Year 8 and Year 9 (for basic and
recap of vocabulary and grammar but also to be able to describe you/ your family/ friends/
to be able to talk about music/ films/ new tech).

Vocabulaire

The main themes/ topics are:

Ma ville/ l’environnement et les problèmes à l’échelle mondiale / My town/


environnement and global issues

Education – school – all vocabulary and structures related to school/


uniform/ clothes

Grammaire

All verbs learned this year and previously (eg: verbes réguliers/ irréguliers/ verbes
pronominaux/ reflexive verbs in the past (2 tenses), present and future (2 tenses)

All grammatical structures seen this year and previously

Recap of adverbs and linking words/connectives (esp. for the Writing part)

Adjectives and adjective agreements – make sure you go over this. The adjective
must agree with the noun it describes.

Divers

Les mots interrogatifs - question words

A few interesting and good websites to improve your French skills

Reading skills

The major national newspaper can all be read online: www.lefigaro.fr, www.lemonde.fr,
www.leparisien.fr, www.liberation.fr, www.lequipe.fr

The following magazines are also worth looking at: www.telerama.fr (also short videos),
www.lexpress.fr, www.letudiant.fr

World news can be read on www.courrierinternational.com

It is also worth looking at www.1jour1actu.com, which is a resume of news articles


(Reading and also short videos) aimed at French children. Some articles from this website
have been used (and adapted) for the Matsec exams.
