TITLE: SOILS

AIM: To compare the water-holding capacity of different soils.

MATERIAL/APPARATUS:
Sandy soil
Loam soil
Clay soil
Water
Measuring cylinders
Triple beam balance
Funnels
Filter paper
Beakers
Dropper
Spatula
Stop watch

Note when labelling the diagram put all the labels on one side as you know they should be.

DRAWING OF SETUP OF APPARATUS

METHOD:
Three measuring cylinders were setup as shown in the drawing of setup of apparatus. Then
20g of sandy soil, 20g of clay soil and 20g of clay soil were placed into each funnel. 50cm 3 of
water was poured over each soil sample.Each sample was allowed to drain for 10 minutes. The
amount of water collected in the measuring cylinder was measured and recorded. The amount
of water retained by each type of soil was calculated. The results were recorded in a table.
