THE GOOFY GAZETTE

OCTOBER 14, 2011

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE WEEK OF OCTOBER 10 - 14:
We read Fifi Ferrets Flute, added many F items/pictures to our letter F baggie and learned what sound the letter F makes (please review this sound with me at home, in the car, or in the bathtub!). We added three new words to our word wall for the letter F for, four, five. We wrote our name with fruit loops (and ate a few too!). We graphed Fall Candy Corn M & Ms, yummy! We painted with a fly swatter. We talked about fire safety since it is fire safety week. Our Scholastics weekly reader taught us what to do in case of a fire in our home-get low and go. We melted crayons on paper leaves using a candle warmer. The results were stunning! Nature could not have made the leaves any better than my friends did. They loved how to watch the crayons melt and to see what color they made when mixing two or three colors together. We classified all the beautiful leaves brought in from the leaf hunts my friends went on this past weekend. We classified them by size, shape and color. We painted with our feet! We LOVED this activity We tossed our alphabet beach ball around our circle. When we caught it we had to tell the letter and sound for the letter that our right thumb was on. We use our alphabet beach ball to reinforce letter recognition, initial sound recognition, picture recognition, letter/sound correspondence and initial letter and sound correspondence. Fun way to learn! We went fishing with Dr. Seuss One fish Two fish Red fish Blue fish Game. We read with a friend in the dark with our flashlights on Friday! We read the Foot Book by Dr. Seuss and traced our foot on paper. We then measured how long our foot was with cubes! We wore flip-flops in honor of letter F on Friday! While wearing our flip-flops we made a quick, cute class book, Guess Whos Feet? By the flip-flop wearing kids at Brilliant Minds Preschool. As you look through the book, see if you can guys whose feet are on each page! We played a new game, Avalanche Fruit Stand. A great game that exercises preschoolers color matching and fine motor skills. We practiced writing the letter Ff and our name on paper. We read through our Letter Ff book and circled all letter Ffs.

We each painted our own pumpkin and placed the face just where we thought it belonged! Now we have our own little pumpkin patch, actually jack-o-lantern patch! We started making our bats to hang from the ceiling for Halloween! We added the penny (name, color, value) to our morning circle time wall. We learned one new Sing & Spell sight word song this week (words below). In sign language we reviewed how to say the following: What is your name, my name is, old and new. We learned how to say the following: Nice to meet you, alike and different. During Storybook Caf, we read Leaf Man and made Aut-Yum leaves! We then made our own leaf man using all our leaves from our leaf hunt.

WORDS OF WISDOM....PUT OFF ONE DAY AND TEN DAYS WILL PASS.

INFO & REMINDERS

So sorry, I forgot to send the basket home with Eva last Friday. EVA will be our Star of the Week for next week! Please send a back pack with your child each day. We stay very active here at the preschool and depend on back pack express to get items to and from school each and every day! The concept activity bags are sent home on Mondays and do not need to be returned until the following Monday. If you chose to send your bag back early, a new bag will not be sent home until the next Monday. Children will not receive a new bag until the previous bag is returned. Our numbers interactive class book and Eleven Apples Up On Top class book are making their rounds! We are also sending around our Shape Concentration game that we made. Please take about 2 days to read/interact with the book and send it back so another friend can take a turn. Enjoy!

MARK YOUR CALENDAR

Harvest/Halloween Party will be Friday, October 28th. Your child is welcome to wear his/her Halloween costume. Please send in 10 individually wrapped treats to share that day (candy or food)! OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD! PACK A SHOE BOX!
In hopes of getting everyone in the holiday giving spirit and teach our little ones the importance of giving, the preschool will be participating in Operation Christmas Child. Our goal is to fill a shoe box for one little girl between the age of 2 and 4 years old. We will begin filling our preprinted shoe this coming Monday, October 17th and will end Friday, November 11th. Participation is optional, but I hope all will consider giving to this little girl. Below is a list of gift suggestions. I was thinking if each family gave 2-3 items we could fill our shoe box. If you arent able to give anything or do not wish to participate, no problem I understand. If you wish to give more than 2-3 items that would be wonderful, she will take them and be blessed by them I know. PLEASE NOTEITEMS MUST BE NEW. NO USED OR DAMAGED ITEMS WILL BE ACCEPTED. We will have the opportunity to follow our box* and find out its destination as well! Happy giving and may you all be blessed :)

GIFT SUGGESTIONS SCHOOL SUPPLIES: pens, pencils and sharpeners, crayons or markers, stamps and ink pads, writing pads or paper, coloring and picture books TOYS: balls, small dolls or stuffed animals, kazoos, harmonicas, yo-yos, jump ropes, small Etch A Sketch, toys that light up or make noise (with extra batteries), Slinky, etc. HYGIENE ITEMS: toothbrush, toothpaste, mild bar soap (in plastic bag), comb, washcloth, etc. OTHER: hard candy, lollipops, gum, T-shirts, socks, sunhat, sunglasses, hair clips, toy jewelry, watches, flashlights (with extra batteries) *It does say that we may enclose a note to the child and a photo of ourselves with name and address as the child MAY write back. If it is ok with all our families here at Brilliant Minds Preschool, I think it would be really neat for us to make a card and have all the children sign their name to it and include our class picture. The child could then see firsthand who the shoe box was from! Please let me know if you do not want your child included in the picture. ME I can spell me, M E, M E, Me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me! M E, M E! (repeat)
