QUESTIONS

1.) When it comes to their structure, formaldehyde has a simple structure rather than
acetaldehyde and benzaldehyde with it only containing two hydrogen atoms and one
oxygen atom bonded to a single carbon atom. Formaldehyde is regarded to be more
toxic and reactive than acetaldehyde and benzaldehyde and can cause health
complications if inhaled for a prolonged amount of time.
2.) The aliphatic aldehyde (benzaldehyde) that we used in the experiment has a faster
reaction time and seems to react more quickly compared to aromatic aldehydes
(formaldehyde and acetaldehyde) which usually takes a few minutes. The Fehling,
Schille and Tollen test are indicators to detect aldehydes and determine their rate of
reactiveness.
3.) Formaldehyde is primarily used in preservation of animal specimens and production
of detergents and cosmetic products. When it comes to medicine, it is utilized as an
antibacterial agent and as an embalming agent to preserve human cadavers from
decaying quickly after death.

GENERALIZATION
 Aldehydes are an organic compound in which the carbonyl group is attached to a
carbon atom at the end of a carbon chain. They are compounds that has a lot of
uses in producing cleaning agents, cosmetics and hygiene products. They are
categorized by the formula R−CH=O and most of the aldehydes are known to
have a strong and distinctive odor. Each aldehyde compound, although relatively
similar is different to one another when it comes to their chemical structure and
odor for example.
