SPECIFIC GRAVITY TEST OF PAINTS

1. PURPOSE
This standard aims at specifying the methods of measuring specific gravity of the materials used for coating and
protection against corrosion in the painting and assembly shops in order to determine their physical properties.

2. SCOPE
This standard applies to the test method for specific gravity of the paint, pretreatment / electro-deposition, sealer
and wax used in the painting and assembly shops.

3. DEFINITION

3.1. Specific gravity: Ratio of the density of a substance to that of a standard substance. For solids and
liquids, the standard substance is usually water at 39.2°F (4.0°C), which has a density of 1.00 kg/liter. Gases are
usually compared to dry air, which has a density of 1.29 g/liter at 32°F (0°C) and 1 atmosphere pressure. Because
it is a ratio of two quantities that have the same dimensions (mass per unit volume), specific gravity has no
dimension

4. SAMPLING AND NUMBER OF TEST PIECE

4.1. Obtain the test sample from a lot with same quality with a sampler, and fill the sample in a sealed
container to prevent it from evaporation. Stir the sample in such a fashion that the sample gets uniformity prior to
use for the test.

5. TEST CONDITIONS

5.1. The test site shall, in principle, be under conditions of temperature at 20±2℃ & humidity at 65±5%, not be
exposed a direct ray of light and be indoor where is no gas affected test and bad ventilation. If the site fails to
satisfy the conditions above, record the actual temperature and the humidity on the test result sheet.

6. SPECIFIC GRAVITY MEASUREMENT USING SPECIFIC GRAVITY CUP

6.1. TEST EQUIPMENT

6.1.1. Specific gravity cup(mass of water shall be 100±1g, JIS K 5400 clause 4.6.2)

6.1.2. Balance (capable to measure the second decimal point.)

6.2. Measuring method

6.2.1. Wash the specific gravity cup shown in Fig 1 with solvent, dry with a dry piece of cloth or air at the
ambient temperature.

SPECIFIC GRAVITY TEST OF PAINTS

6.2.2. After drying specific gravity cup at the ambient temperature, put specific gravity cup on balance and then
settle with zero

6.2.3. Set test piece 20℃ with exposing it for min. 2 hours at 20℃ thermostat. When it is difficult to adjust the
temperature to, the measured temperature shall be recorded.

6.2.4. After putting specific gravity cup down from balance, fill up with the sample so that the sample overflow a
little as capping the specific gravity cup. At this time, fill up the specific gravity cup with the sample without letting
bubbles enter the cup. If bubbles are generated, remove that by all means.

6.2.5. After capping the cup, wipe the sample overflowing through the cap hole with a dry cloth. At this time,
wipe the surrounding and lower part of specific gravity cup.

6.2.6. After putting specific gravity cup on balance carefully, weigh the weight (W1). at this time balance status
shall be initial settlement with zero.

6.2.7. After weighting, remove the sample in the specific gravity cup. And then, wash with solvent and dry with a
dry piece of cloth or air at the ambient temperature.

6.3. Evaluation method

6.3.1. Gravity of sample = W1 / 100

7. SPECIFIC GRAVITY MEASUREMENT USING HYDROMETER

7.1. Test equipment

7.1.1. Hydrometer (KS B 5213)

SPECIFIC GRAVITY TEST OF PAINTS

7.1.2. Beaker or mess cylinder with diameter 40mm or more and height 250mm or higher.

7.2. Measurement method

7.2.1. Place coating material in a constant temperature oven at 20℃ and soak it for 2 hours or longer to set its
temperature at 20℃. If temperature is not 20℃, record the coating material’s actual temperature.

7.2.2. Fill sample into a beaker or mess cylinder of diameter 40mm and height 250mm or more to about 80
percent of capacity. Here, pour it slowly to prevent foam generation.

7.2.3. After sample pouring, place the hydrometer into the test sample. Use appropriate hydrometer for
anticipated test condition. If the hydrometer either sinks to the bottom or floats on sample, use a different
hydrometer until its needle points to the sample surface.

7.2.4. Read the hydrometer reading at the sample surface level.

7.3. Evaluation

7.3.1. Take three measurements of hydrometer and take its arithmetic mean as the specific gravity of the
sample.
