TEST METHOD FOR HUMIDITY OF PAINT EDS-T-7951
COATINGS

1. PU0RPOSE

This standard aims at specifying the method of humidity test to determine physical properties of the wax applied

to the finished vehicle for improved corrosion resistance.

2. SCOPE

This standard applies to humidity test of cavity wax, underbody wax and engine room wax.

3. TEST CONDITION

3.1. The test site shall, in principle, be under conditions of temperature at 20±2℃ & humidity at 65±5%, not
be exposed a direct ray of light and be indoor where is no gas affected test and bad ventilation. If the site fails to
satisfy the conditions above, record the actual temperature and the humidity on the test result sheet.

3.2. In principle, a test piece should take the form of a complete-built vehicle with the prescribed coating
specifications applied. For the sake of convenience, the test piece can be a sample that is manufactured using the
same materials and specifications as the complete-built car.

3.3. There must be no foreign particles on the specimen's surface to avoid by-affects.

4. TEST EQUIPMENT

4.1. Humidity chamber

4.2. Cutter : agreed with jis k 5400 (encouraging NT cutter A type)

4.3. Tape : 3m #610 or cellophane adhesive tape having identical performance

4.4. Cutting equipment(width 1㎜, width 2㎜) and chisel (encouraging min. 15mm width)

4.5. Brush made by strong polyamide

5. TEMPERATURE & HUMIDITY CHAMBER

5.1. Humidity control : Humidity is generated when distilled or ion-exchange water evaporates from tank set
up in a chamber.

5.2. Heating : Heating process starts with the heater set up on the bottom through the medium of distilled

water.

5.3. Heat cycle : Heat cycle starts when the heater stabilizes the temperature inside the chamber for a certain
time.

5.4. Air circulation equipment : Air circulation equipment is used to circulate air to maintain a temperature
change within 0.5℃ at any point.

5.5. Chamber must be totally airtight when closed, and be made of strongly corrosion-resistant material that
does not affect a test piece.

5.6. Test shelf must be made of corrosion-resistant material or coated for anti-corrosion. The material and
coating must not affect a test piece.

5.7. Temperature and humidity of chamber shall be kept constant

5.8. A test piece must placed 100 mm away from the inner wall and its bottom surface must be kept 200 mm
away from the distilled water surface. Close the equipment and wait until the humidity and temperature comes up
to a specified point within one hour and half.

6. TEST METHOD

6.1. A test piece must be fabricated in the same specification and material as a finished car. Leave the test at
room temperature for 72 hours after paint hardening and then in a moisture-resistant chamber (40±3℃, 98%RH
or higher) for a specified time. Be careful that any factor that may affect the test should not appear on the paint film
and may-be-rusty every cutting section and corner must be coated before the input to the chamber.

6.2. Be careful that a test piece should not contact another and a drop of water should not fall down from one
to another. So, keep the inter-piece distance at more than 20 mm.

6.3. After specific time, take test piece out in humidity chamber.

6.4. For electro and final/semi-final painting test pieces, take them out of the chamber, wash them with water,
and then leave them at room temperature for an hour or longer. Evaluate the outer appearance, paint polish grade,
color, and looseness. To check the looseness, follow ASTM D714. Leave them at room temperature for 24 hours
and perform an adhesiveness test according to EDS-T-7910.

6.5. Leave the wax layer at room temperature for 24 hours and check water absorption and washaway. Use a
chisel and strip wax layer to check corrosion.

6.6. Leave PVC U/COAT sealant at room temperature for 24 hours and check the outer appearance,
looseness, and corrosion. Then, perform an adhesiveness test according to EDS-T-7910.

6.7. Leave the other sealants at room temperature for 24 hours and check the outer appearance, looseness,
and corrosion. Then, perform an adhesiveness test on a 1mm width of a cross-cut section according to EDS-T-
7910.

7. Evaluating Degree of Blistering of Paints (ASTM D714)

7.1. Following figures are included to illustrate two characteristic of blistering size and frequency

7.2. Size

7.2.1. Following figures illustrate four steps as to size on a numerical scale from 10 to 0

7.2.2. 10 represent no blistering, blistering standard no. 8 represents the smallest size blister easily seen by the
unaided eye. Blistering standards no.6, 4 and 2 represent progressively larger sizes.

7.3. frequency

7.3.1. Following figures are containing the four steps in frequency.

7.3.2. DENSE : D

7.3.3. MEDIUM DENSE : MD

7.3.4. MEDIUM : M

7.3.5. FEW : F

7.4. A quantitative physical description of blistering would include the following characteristics determined by
actual count :. size distribution in terms of mensuration units, frequency of occurrence per unit area, pattern of
distribution over the surface and shape of blister

7.5. Evaluation method

7.6. Degree of Blistering of Paints shall be compared with following figures as specific test condition and
decide the size and frequency
