LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS

GRADE: 7 QUARTER: 2 WEEK: 8 DAY:4

COMPETENCY & The learner solves problems involving equations and inequalities in one
OBJECTIVES : variable.(M7AL-IIj-2)
 Solve problems involving equations and inequalities in one variable
CONTENT : Solving Problems Involving Equations and Inequalities in One Variable
LEARNING
:
RESOURCES SLM, Quarter 2, Module 8
PROCEDURE A. Preparation
Routinary activities
 Prayer
 Checking of the attendance
B. Motivation
The teacher will post a problem on the board and let the students analyze
and answer the given problem.
Problem:
Mang Kanor, a sili-ice cream vendor, sold twice as much ice cream in the
afternoon than in the morning. If he sold 216 cups of ice cream on that day,
how many cups of ice cream did he sell in the morning?
C. Presentation
Guide Questions:
1. What is asked in the given problem?
2. What are the given information that will help you solve the problem?
A. Discussion/Abstraction
To solve a word problem, one must know how to write equations. There
are steps to follow when writing equation and finally finding the
solution.
1.Read and explore the problem. Choose a variable to represent the
unknown number in the problem. This is called defining the variable.
2.Use this variable in writing expressions for other unknown numbers in
the problem
3.Read the problem again and decide how the unknown number relates to
other information in the problem.
4.Write an equation to represent the relationship.
5.Solve for the unknown.
6.Check by going back to the original statement.

Example 1. Number Relation

One number is 3 less than another number. If their sum is 49, find
the two numbers.
Solution:
Step 1: Let x be the first number Step 6: Check
Step 2: Let x−3 be the second number x + ( x−3 )=49
Step 3: The sum of two numbers is 49. 26+23=49
Step 4: x + ( x−3 )=49 49=49
Step 5: x + x−3=49
2 x−3+3=49+3
2 x=52
2 x 52
=
2 2
x=26 the first number
x−3=26−3=23 the second number

There are problems in real life that require several answers.

These problems use the concept of inequality. To solve a word
problem, one must know how to write equations. There are steps to
follow when writing equation and finally finding the solution.
 Read and understand the problem carefully
 Represent the unknown using variables.
 Formulate an inequality.
 Solve the inequality formulated. .
 Check or justify your answer.

Example: The sum of four consecutive integers decreased by 18 is greater

than twice the smallest of the four. What are the four smallest such
integers?
Solution:
Step 1. Let x be the smallest of the four integers
Step 2: The other integers are x +1 , x +2 ,∧x +3.
Step 3: x + ( x+ 1 )+ ( x+2 )+ ( x +3 ) −18>2 x
Step 4: x + x+ 1+ x +2+ x +3−18>2 x
4 x−12>2 x
4 x−2 x >12
2 x> 12
x >6

Therefore, the smallest of the four integers is at least 7, in which case, the
four consecutive integers are 7, 8, 9, 10.
Step 5: Check:
(7+ 8+9+10 ¿−18>2(7) (6+7 +8+9 ¿−18>2(6)
34−18>14 30−18>¿12
16>14 True 12>12 False

E. Exercises
Board work
Problem:

Karen is twice as old as Lori. Three years from now, the sum of their ages
will be 42. How old is Karen?
Guide Questions:
1. What is asked in the problem?
2. What is the present age of Karen? Lori?
3. What is the age of Karen three years from now? Lori?
4. What is the mathematical sentence that shows that the sum of their ages
is 42, three years from now?
5. What is Lori’s age?
6. How old is Karen?
F.Generalization
What are the steps in solving problems involving linear equations and
inequalities?
What are some things to consider in solving problems like these?
G. Application
1. What is the importance of learning and mastering the skills in
solving problems involving linear equations and inequalities?
2. Can you cite some type of real-world problems where linear
equations and inequalities are relevant and useful.
H. Evaluation
Directions: Solving the following problems.
1. Karen is twice as old as Lori. Three years from now, the sum of
their ages will be 36. How old is Karen?
2. Sam and Alex play in the same soccer team. Last Saturday Alex
scored 4 more goals than Sam, but together they scored less
than 12 goals. What are the possible number of goals Alex
scored?
3. Kevin wants to buy some pencils at a price of P4.50 each. He
does not want to spend more than P75.00. What is the greatest
number of pencils can Kevin buy?
