Cooling System
SMCS - 1350
This engine has a pressure type cooling system. A pressure type cooling system gives two
advantages. First, the cooling system can be operated safely at a temperature that is higher than the
boiling point of water. Also, cavitation in the water pump is prevented. It is more difficult for air or
steam pockets to be made in the cooling system.

The jacket water pump (12) provides coolant to the engine oil cooler (11) and to the power train oil
coolers (9) and (10). Coolant then flows through the engine block and into the cylinder heads. From
the cylinder heads, the coolant flows into a thermostat housing (5). The thermostat then directs the
coolant to either the jacket water pump (12) for recirculation or to the radiator (4) for cooling
depending on the temperature of the coolant.
Coolant then flows through the radiator with a small amount of flow of the coolant to the hydraulic
oil cooler (13) before returning the coolant to the jacket water pump (12). Also, a small amount of
coolant flows to turbochargers (3) and (8) for cooling, and then back to the shunt tank (1). Coolant
from the shunt tank then flows to the jacket water pump.
