1. Use the method of cylindrical shells to find the volume generated by ro-
tating the region bounded by the given curves about the specified line.
Sketch the region and a typical shell.

a) y = x, y = x, y = 12 ; about x = 1.

b) y = x, y = x, y = 12 ; about y = 2.

c) y = x, y = x, y = 12 ; about y = 12 .

2. Find the length of the curve

3. Use Simpson’s rule with n = 6 to approximate the area of the surface

obtained by rotating the curve about the given line.
a) y = ln x, 1 ≤ x ≤ 3 about the y-axis.

b) y = e−x , 0 ≤ x ≤ 1 about the line y = −1.
4. If the infinite curve f (x) = 2−x + 1, x ≥ 0, is rotated about the line y = 1,
find the area of the resulting surface.

5. Estimate the volume of the solid that lies below the surface f (x, y) = xy
and above the region R = [0, 6] × [0, 4] by using a Riemann sum with four
regular subintervals for [0, 6] and three regular subintervals for [0, 4]. Take
sample points to be the right corner of each square.(i.e. the sample point
of each interval is the right end point.) Use double integrals to compute
the actual volume and give the error involved.
