Previous research has shown that women talk almost three times as much as men.

In fact, an
average woman notches up 20,000 words in a day, which is about 13,000 more than the
average man.

Three Notable Mothers in The Bible

There are many stories in the Bible involving mothers. I’ve chosen the following three to
highlight.

1. Jochebed, the mother of Moses. We hear far more about her son than her, but her
role deserves highlighting. Moses was born when the Israelites were slaves in Egypt and
the Pharaoh was killing baby boys.
Because Jochebed hid her baby boy in the river in a basket that was found by Pharaoh’s
daughter, he was not killed. Instead, he grew up and was used by God to deliver the
nation of Israel.

2. Hannah, the mother of Samuel. Before he was born, she was barren and grief-
stricken. She went to the temple crying out to the Lord and she was given Samuel. Her
gratitude led her to sacrifice raising the boy herself and she took him to the prophet Eli.
And she said to him, “Pardon me, my lord. As surely as you live, I am the woman who
stood here beside you praying to the Lord. I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted
me what I asked of him. So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he will be given
over to the Lord.” And he worshiped the Lord there (1 Samuel 1:26-28).
Hannah’s sacrifice did not go unnoticed by God.
And the LORD blessed Hannah, and she conceived and gave birth to three sons and two
daughters. Meanwhile, Samuel grew up in the presence of the LORD (1 Samuel 2:21).
3. Nameless mother of the living child
We hear about the wisdom of Solomon. The most famous story regarding his wisdom
involves mothering.
The story is of two women who were prostitutes that both gave birth to boys three days
apart. One of the women accidentally smothered her son and switched the babies in the
middle of the night.

In the morning, the nameless mother of the living noticed the switch, but the nameless
mother of the dead refused to return him.
The matter was brought before King Solomon who responded to their arguing with
wisdom revealing the true mother — the one who’d rather give him up than have him
killed — a giver of life.
And the king said, “Bring me a sword.” So a sword was brought before the king. And the
king said, “Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one and half to the
other.” Then the woman whose son was alive said to the king, because her heart yearned
for her son, “Oh, my lord, give her the living child, and by no means put him to death.” But
the other said, “He shall be neither mine nor yours; divide him.” Then the king answered
and said, “Give the living child to the first woman, and by no means put him to death; she
is his mother” (1 Kings 3:24-28).

The Mother’s Heart

In all three of the preceding examples, the mother’s demonstrated sacrificial love.
Again, we see this in the heart of God.

Here are a few Bible verses about the character traits of godly mothers and what
Biblical motherhood looks like:

1. A godly mother fears the Lord

Psalm 111:10 says, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; a good
understanding has all those who do His commandments."

Deuteronomy 6:18 also says, "And you shall do what is right and good in the sight of
the Lord, that it may be well with you...."

To have the right understanding of godly parenting, a Christian mother recognizes that
Biblical motherhood isn't a popularity contest; it is a commitment to God's standards
for life and motherhood. A godly mom chooses not to fret about gaining worldly
acceptance and meeting unrealistic expectations. Instead, she devotes herself to living
in a way that is pleasing to God.

2. A godly mother trusts in God

Psalm 9:10 says, "And those who know Your name will put their trust in You; for
You, Lord, have not forsaken those who seek You."

Her trust in God is most evident during the most trying and depleting seasons of her
life. Like the widow of Zarephath, she lives by faith and not by sight. She trusts that
God will provide for her family’s needs. When it seems like she’s drowning in despair,
she keeps her eyes on God and claims His promises for each day.

3. She admitted when she had failed.

Every mother fails at motherhood, many times on a daily basis. My mom had her
moments of failure too. But a moment of failure does not mean you should give up
entirely. “For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again…” (Prov. 24:16).
Instead of giving up when she fell short, or worse yet, pretending it didn't happen, she
admitted her failure both to the Lord and to her children.

The humility of a godly mother takes place on two fronts:

 Humility before God

 Humility towards her children

A mother's humility before God recognizes her own weakness and her need to depend
on the spirit of God each moment of the day. A humble mother keeps her focus on God,
knowing that she cannot be a godly mother through her own strength and wisdom. She
digs into scripture, nurturing her own spirit, knowing that she cannot pour from an
empty vessel.

A mother's humility toward her children might look like apologizing when she has said
hurtful words to them. It might look like being honest with them about her weaknesses
and being an example of how to depend on God.

4. A godly mother cheerfully serves her family as unto God

Colossians 3:23 says, "And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men."

Philippians 2:14 also says, "Do all things without complaining and disputing."

As a home missionary, a godly mom recognizes she has been appointed by Christ to serve Him
as a missionary in her own home. She realizes ministry doesn't only happen in the mission field
and in church — it happens daily in the seemingly mundane and ordinary moments that unfold
within the four walls of her home. Her service to God is an act of wholehearted praise and
worship.

Proverbs 14:1 says, "The wise woman builds her house, but the foolish pulls it down
with her hands."

Drawing wisdom and guidance from the Bible, a Christian mother will partner with God
and her husband to build a solid foundation for their home. As one, she and her husband
lead their family in worship, prayer, and the reading of the Bible. They engage their
children in discussions about challenges and world events in light of Scripture. Every
morning, she asked the Holy Spirit to reveal various of creating a Christ-centered home.
5. A godly mother prays for her family
Colossians 4:2 says, "Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving."

A praying mother intercedes for her children daily. Her prayers protect her children from being
deceived by the lies of the world. She prays for their salvation and asks God to give them
teachable hearts so they may be ready to receive and accept the blessings of engaging and
trusting in God's Word.

6. A godly mother seeks godly counsel

Proverbs 19:20-21 says, “Listen to counsel and receive instruction, that you may be wise in your
latter days. There are many plans in a man’s heart, nevertheless the Lord’s counsel—that will
stand.”

She seeks counsel and guidance from God-fearing mentors who encourage her and keep her
accountable. She maintains a posture of learning and proactively looks for counselors who live
according to God’s Word. While seeking counsel, she walks in obedience and searches Scripture
for wisdom, direction, and clarity. She prays for God to grant her discernment to know which
counsel is in accordance with God’s will.

The greatest biblical role of a mother is that of a disciple maker. She solemnly takes on her role
in the great commission by pointing her children to God. Matthew 28:19 says, "Go therefore
and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son
and of the Holy Spirit."

A Christian mother is God's chosen home missionary to her children. She is her children’s first
window into the life and character of Christ. In the mundane moments, a godly mother who is
raising her children for Christ is planting seeds of gospel truth in their hearts. The Holy Spirit
works alongside her to transform her children’s hearts and prepare them for their future life.

There seems to be no equal to the wonder and greatness of a mother's love. For that
we praise God and give him thanks. We pray that God will give our mothers all that they need
to continue to show that love.
But we also realize that there is a greater love. It is the love of God, the unfailing,
constant love of God. It is shown to us in the sending of his only Son to pay for our sins. It is
always with us in our joys and sorrows, in every experience of life. We can know this love and
be sure of it because it is like the love of a faithful and caring mother.

Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has
borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! (Isaiah 49:15).
