PAGES WITHOUT NAME AND ROLL NUMBER WILL NOT BE EVALUATED
➢ ASSUME ANY DATA/ FIGURE/TABLE IF MISSING
➢ Rename your answer script as “roll number” followed by “CPED”
➢ Late submission will lead to deduction of marks

Attempt any 6 questions

1. Explain the type of vessel supports with their applications. Discuss briefly the designing of
horizontal and vertical decanters. [2.5+2.5]

2. Describe briefly and gas-solid separators and their parameters to be designed. Explain various
types of crystallizers, their applications. [2.5+2.5]

3. i) Explain each and every types of head and closures, their strength, and applications in
chemical industries. [2.5]
ii) Discuss types of losses encountered in storage of volatile liquids. [2.5]

4. i) Explain various types of stresses in a cylinder. [1+4]

ii) A process vessel is to be designed for the maximum operating pressure of 500 kN/m2. The
vessel has nominal diameter has 1.2 m and tangent to tangent length of 2.4 m. Maximum
allowable stress of the vessel is 118 MN/m2. The corrosion allowance can be taken as 2mm for
the life span. The weld joint efficiency can be taken as 0.85. Calculate:
i- What will be standard plate thickness to fabricate the vessel.
ii- If spherical vessel having same diameter and thickness is fabricated with same quality of steel,
what will be maximum internal pressure which a vessel could withstand.

5. A moist non hygroscopic granular solid at 260 ºC is to be dried from 20% initial moisture to
0.3% final moisture in a rotary dryer at a rate of 1500 kg/h. The hot air enters the dryer at 1350
ºC with a humidity of 0.015. With condition that the temperature of the solid leaving the dryer
must not exceed 1100 ºC and the air velocity must not exceed 1.5 m/s in order to avoid dust carry
over. Cps = 0.85 kJ/kg.K. Calculate the diameter of the dryer. [5]

6. Describe the types of flows in a distillation column. Explain the role of pressure drop in
distillation column. Explain the role of downcomers in design of column. [2+2+1]

7. Describe the types of evaporators. Explain the AICHE method of predicting plate efficiencies
of distillation column. [2.5+2.5]
