Instruction
1. Hang banners in the corners of the blackboard.
2. Teacher will show groups of words.
3. Pupils choose a corner to stand at.
4. If pupils get it right, they will continue playing the game.
5. If pupils are wrong, they are out of the game.
6. Pupils who are correct get a sticker.
(Teacher shows ten groups of words. Pupil with the most stickers is
the Game Champ!)

d) LESSON PROPER
1. MOTIVATION

The teacher will post a conversation. The pupils will be asked to pair up to enact the
conversation with correct expressions.
(After the activity, the pupils will be asked why they need to clearly read sentences with proper
expressions.)

Guide questions:
 What did you notice in that conversation?
 What are the purpose of each sentence (for example, asking a question, or telling
someone to do something)?
 Why do we need to use punctuation marks?
 Are they essential to form a sentence?
 What do you think is our lesson for today?

2. ACTIVITY
The students will be divided in to four; each group will be given pieces of paper with words
written on them. They will be asked to arrange the words in order to make a sentence.

They will come up with the following sentences:


1. Philippines is rich in natural resources.
2. When did you visit the white island?
3. Please give the certificate to me.
4. I can’t believe it! We won!

3. PRESENTATION AND ANALYSIS


Can anybody tell me what he/she notices with the following sentences?
Now, let me introduce to you the four kinds of sentences.
Sentence 1 is declarative sentence.
Sentence 2 is an interrogative sentence.
Sentence 3 is an imperative sentence.
Sentence 4 is an exclamatory sentence.

KINDS OF SENTENCES ACCORDING TO FUNCTION


A sentence is a group of words that makes complete thought, contains a main verb, and
begins with a capital letter, and ends with a punctuation mark.

Sentence used to make a statement or express opinion: DECLARATIVE

“I want to be a good writer.” (Makes a statement)

“My friend is a really good writer.” (Expresses an opinion)

to ask questions: INTERROGATIVE


“When are you going to turn in your writing assignment?”

“Do you know what the weather will be tomorrow?”


to give command or make a request: IMPERATIVE

“Please sit down.”


“Come here at once!”

to express strong feelings: EXCLAMATORY

You’re driving too fast!


It’s so cold!

4. ABSTRACTION

 Why is it important to know the different kinds of sentences according to use?


 What are the uses of the different punctuation marks?
 How the change in punctuation changes the tone and feelings of the sentences?
 How can we incorporate these sentences in our future writing (paragraph)?

5. APPLICATION:

The class will be divided into 3 groups. Each group will be given materials needed for the
activity.
Instruction:
1. Each group will be given same pictures at the same time. They will have to form
different types of sentences according to function in just 1 minute.
2. Each group will present their work in front to check if the sentences are
grammatically correct, properly punctuated, and written properly.
3. Each correct sentence will be equivalent to 1 point.
4. The group with the most number of points after 5 round will win the game.

e) GENERALIZATION
What are the four kinds of sentences according to function?

 Every sentence serves one of four functions. It must either make a


statement, issue a command, ask a question, or exclaim and
emotion or idea.
 The four kinds of sentences according to functions are declarative,
interrogative, imperative and exclamatory.
 Declarative sentences make statements. Most sentences are
declarative. Declarative sentences always end with a period.
 Imperative sentences issue commands.
 Interrogative sentences ask questions. All interrogative sentences
end in question marks.
 Exclamatory sentences express excitement or emotion. . Every
exclamatory sentence should end in an exclamation point.

 Why do we need to use punctuation marks?


 Are they essential to form a sentence?
 Why do you think it is important to read sentences correctly and
clearly with expressions?

f) EVALUATION
Directions: Add the correct ending punctuation. Then write whether the sentence is
declarative, imperative, interrogative, or exclamatory.

declarative, 4 imperative, 4 exclamatory and 4 interrogative sentences.
