Some Suggested MTE599 Final Year Projects

1. Design and Implementation of a Waiter Robot

This project involves the design and implementation of a mobile robot system that can take
customer orders in a restaurant and serve. It should also be capable of receiving payments. It
involves the design and construction of the necessary robotic body, the sensors and actuators,
power supply and communication devices. The robot should be able to avoid obstacles and
interact safely with humans. Software components of the project will involve the operating
protocol, control algorithms and navigation systems, planning and execution algorithms and
communication protocols. Several videos and journal articles are available to assist in carrying
out the project. (Suggested by Prof. J. D. Jiya)
2. Design and Construction of a Robot Helper
This project is aimed at designing and constructing a two-wheel robotic system that can be able
to carry load from one location to another. The necessary sensors include a gyroscope to
maintain stable upright position of the robot, since it will be operated on two wheels. The
control of the vertical position of the robot can be achieved using PID control design. Intelligent
control techniques can also be implemented to achieve a smarter system. Several videos and
journal articles are available to assist in carrying out this project. (Suggested by Prof. J. D. Jiya)
3. Design and Construction of a Smart Weeding Robot
This robot should be able to autonomously detect and remove weeds from crops, gardens or
lawns. It will help reduce the use of herbicides and improve crop yield. The physical
construction of this project can take the form of a lawn mower, while the instrumentation can
consist of cameras and proximity sensors for obstacle avoidance. The software part will include
image processing algorithms to distinguish between useful plants and weeds, as well as a
decision algorithm. Videos and journals are available to assist with this project. (Suggested by
Prof. J. D. Jiya)
4. Design and Construction of a Smart Back Pack Power Sprayer Machine
This project entails the design of a smart insecticide and pesticide sprayer for crops that will
monitor wind direction and speed as the parameters to determine the spraying power. This is
to reduce wastage and also prevent the operator from coming into contact with the harmful
chemicals. Artificial intelligent algorithms will be incorporated to ensure a smart system.
Videos and tutorials are available to assist with this project. (Suggested by Prof. J. D. Jiya)
5. Design and Construction of Smart Baby Comforter and Monitoring System
This project aims to improve on an existing project which was carried out in the department
with a view to improving on it. The system is designed to assist nursing mothers comfort their
babies by automatically rocking the baby’s bed when the baby starts crying. It also has a remote
monitoring system such that the mother can receive in real time, sound coming from the baby.
The system can be converted to a smart one by incorporating artificial intelligence techniques
for the comforting of the baby e.g the speed of the rocking can be determined by the baby’s
cries etc. (Suggested by A. G. Ibrahim)
6. Design and Construction of a Solar Tracking Cooker
This project was also carried out at the department, and can be studied with a view to improving
on it. Due to global warming caused by deforestation and other man-made environmental
factors, this design is necessary to reduce the rate of felling down of trees used as firewood for
cooking. The project converts sunlight directly into thermal energy by the use of a parabolic
dish which converges the sun’s rays into a focal point. The solar tracking is essential to ensure
maximum harvest of energy at all times. The project can be improved by four axes tracking
rather than two. (Suggested by A. G. Ibrahim)
7. Conceptual Design and Construction of a Security and Surveillance Drone
This project is about developing manufacturing drawings and procedures as well as outlining
a detailed manufacturing processes of a security and surveillance drone. This includes
materials, technology selection and quality assurance, test procedures and costing. An air to
ground communication protocol in real-time will also be designed and implemented. Several
journal articles are available to assist in carrying out this project (Suggested by A. G. Ibrahim).
8. Design and Implementation of a Voice Recognition System
The project is about development of software tools for audio signal analysis using signal
processing and machine learning algorithms. Existing audio recordings from publicly available
datasets and/or new audio recordings will be used for the experimental evaluation. (Suggested
by A. G. Ibrahim)
9. Design and Implementation of a Smart Secure Monitoring System
Internet technology has significantly changed our daily life today. Smart system based on
internet has been used widely. This project is to design and implement a smart secure
monitoring system for home security applications based on wireless webcam. The system will
be able to detect 'object', automatically record and transmit/send (message) to designated user.
(Suggested by A. G. Ibrahim)
10. Design and Implementation of a Smart Brushless DC Motor Torque Controller
Brushless DC motors are used in electric vehicles and due to their high ratio of power to mass,
they are regaining interest in bicycles and also light motor bikes. The challenge for this project
is to design a controller and commutator control for the torque control of these motors using
smart and intelligent techniques. (Suggested by A. G. Ibrahim)
11. Design and Construction a Search and Find Robot
Design and development of a wheeled robot that will thoroughly and efficiently search its
environment and locate an object. Image processing techniques as well as machine learning
algorithms will be developed and implemented for this work. (Suggested by A. G. Ibrahim)
12. Design and Implementation of a Gesture Controlled Mobile Robot.
The project entails the design of a mobile robot that responds to hand gesture control for its
movements. A gyroscope-based hand unit will be designed and constructed, as well as the
communication protocol with the mobile robot. (Suggested by A. G. Ibrahim)
