Course Information: The Listening and Speaking class aims to provide students with necessary level of
proficiency to understand the spoken interactions they listen to. In addition, the speaking class aims to
help students use the language fluently in their spoken interactions and spoken productions.
In the 2022-2023 Spring term, there will be 5 contact hours in the Listening and Speaking course. As the
course book, Pathways Listening, Speaking and Critical Thinking 3 will be used.
Students who successfully complete the Listening and Speaking course will be able to
understand extended speech and lectures and follow even complex lines of argument provided the topic
is reasonably familiar,
keep up a conversation on a fairly wide range of topics,
understand announcements and messages on concrete and abstract topics spoken in standard language
at normal speed,
understand most radio documentaries and most other recorded or broadcast audio, material delivered
in standard language and identify the speaker’s mood, tone, etc.,
make presentations or create detailed definitions about topics of personal or professional interest,
interact spontaneously in various contexts and discuss concrete or abstract topics by giving detailed
information,
take part in interviews and give spontaneous answers to predictable questions,
make deductions by using context clues and give advice to others about those situations,
develop critical thinking skills by taking active participation in class discussions,
increase their learner autonomy by taking active part in classroom activities such as discussion, pair
work, group work, and presentations.

Student Assessment:
There will be no additional assessment tool for the Listening and Speaking course. Students’ listening and
speaking skills will be tested through two midterms, one final, a portfolio task and a speaking quiz
throughout the term. In addition, students’ speaking performance will be evaluated based on their overall
speaking performance during the classes throughout the semester.
Academic Integrity
Students at TOBB ETU are expected to carry out their assignments as reliable, responsible, and honourable
individuals. Therefore, any attempt of plagiarism, deception, cheating, impersonation etc. is strongly
prohibited. Students who get involved in any such act will be penalised in accordance with TOBB ETU
student discipline regulations.
Students with Disabilities
Students with any disabilities that can hinder their performance in the classroom or during the exams
should inform their instructors and the department administration in advance so that the necessary
precautions can be taken.
