Journal Reflection
2nd Week of SLMC Maternal Rotation
October 26-28, 2023

On our second week of our rotation in SLMC we took the vital signs of our assigned patients as
per usual and most of the vital signs showed normal results, however, one case in particular that
caught my attention was from the case of our patient San jose, Dyanne on October 27,
specifically her baby. The newborn went through phototherapy because of jaundice. Newborn's
liver is still developing and may not be as efficient at processing bilirubin like an adult's liver.
This can lead to an accumulation of bilirubin in the baby's bloodstream. The usual treatment for
this is phototherapy and even just basking the baby under the sunlight at between 7am & 9am
in the morning because vitamin d helps with absorbing bilirubin in the body of the baby.

And then another case that caught my attention was from a 37 years old mother,
berganio-gupilan, where we experienced the draining of the urine bag for the first time and
measured 150ml/cc of urine. After that day I reflected on why mothers need to go through an
indwelling catheter. I thought that its purpose was to prevent discomfort such as having the
possibility of gaining infection from the incision in the perineal area and also to prevent urinary
retention.
