INTRODUCTION
The Church is the Body of Christ; and Christ is
the Head of the Church (Ephesians 1:22-23;
Colossians 1:18; Ephesians 5:23). In John
16:18, Christ announced a very clear agenda
and intention that has been with God before the
foundation of the world.

That agenda is the birth and coming into

physical manifestation, the Body of Christ – the
Church. Just as the human body is made up of
THEME many different but connected parts, so the
“UNITED Church has many different parts. Jesus Christ,
as part of the Triune (One) God knew the
FOR challenge the Church – His Body – will
GOD’S encounter centuries after He had left His
GLORY” physical earthly ministry, and so prayed for the
(John 17:21) Father to grant the grace and spirit for the
Church to be one.

The expectation of Christ, as articulated in His

prayer for all those who will believe in Him
down the centuries, is that all will be one and be
in harmony (John 17:20-23) as exists in the
Triune God.

The Lord is not oblivious to the tendency for,

GHANA PENTECOSTAL
AND CHARISMATIC
and apparent divisions that the Church will
COUNCIL, WEEK 2023 contend with. Being a spiritual institution with
Page 1
human beings at the helm of affairs, the
dif iculty to maintain united is not a surprise to
the Lord Jesus Christ. He foresaw this
tendency and already committed it to the
Father in prayer whilst He (Christ) was
ful illing His earthly ministry over 2000 years
ago. The desire of our Lord however, is for the
Church to remain united and stand together as
one. It is worth noting that if we as the Body of
Christ are to bring honor and glory to His name,
and are to operate in the full power of the Holy
Spirit, then we must be in harmony with each
THEME
other, just as there is harmony with the Father,
“UNITED Son and Holy Spirit (John 17:21).
FOR
GOD’S Division reduces our abilities and makes us
GLORY” less effective. When divided, we even spend
(John 17:21) our efforts against each other, instead of for
each other. Where we are divided, our focus is
diverted from the main agenda of the Master,
and we rather focus on trivialities and
attacking each other. Divisions in the Church –
the Body of Christ – is the number one agenda
of the devil. During the declaration that
heralded the birth of the church, Christ
announced that “the gates of hades shall not
prevail against” the Church. Thus, victory was
GHANA PENTECOSTAL declared for the Church even before the birth of
AND CHARISMATIC
COUNCIL, WEEK 2023
the Church in Acts 2.

TOPICS FOR THE DAYS
MAINTAINING THE UNITY IN CHRIST
(John 17:21; 1 Corinthians 3:1-9)

In John 17:21-23, there is a focal element in the

prayer of Christ for the believers who will
come to believe in Him through the preaching
of the gospel. The desire of Jesus Christ which
He pleads with the Father, is for all those who
believe in Him and become part of the family
THEME and household of God (Ephesians 2:19) to be
“UNITED united and perfected as one body (John 17:23).
FOR
GOD’S Our (Triune) God dwells in harmony with
GLORY” Himself, and the Church cannot dwell in Him
(God) as a fragmented and divided body. As an
(John 17:21)
ecumenical council, our different
denominations / churches may have some
differences in our practices and doctrines.
These should not be so essential as to separate
and divide us, if our individual and collective
focus remains on the Lord Jesus Christ and His
inished work for our salvation.

As the GPCC Constitution states in Article 3

GHANA PENTECOSTAL (Doctrinal Foundation of GPCC);
AND CHARISMATIC
COUNCIL, WEEK 2023
Page 3
“In Essential Beliefs – we have unity”;

“In Non-Essential Beliefs – we have liberty”;

and

“In All Our Beliefs – we show charity”.

Thus, we do not allow denominational and

minor doctrinal (and practice) differences to
divert our focus from Christ and the mission
THEME (message of the gospel) that He has assigned us
(His Church). The Apostle Paul addressed the
“UNITED tendency of divisions in the Body with the
FOR church in Corinth (1 Corinthians 1:10-17; 3:1-
GOD’S 8).
GLORY”
(John 17:21) From the example in the church at Corinth, let
us focus on our Lord, Savior and Master Jesus
Christ and not focus on the minor issues of
denominations and names of founders of our
churches. Indeed, we must fully honor and
gloriously celebrate our founders and leaders
who yielded themselves (and continue to yield)
as instruments and vessels through whom the
gospel of Christ has reached us and is still being
taken further to others. But we must endeavor
GHANA PENTECOSTAL
AND CHARISMATIC at all times to preach Christ and Him cruci ied”

for the salvation of all mankind.

UNITED BY ONE FAITH AND
ONE BAPTISM IN ONE LORD
(1 Corinthians 1:13;
8:4b-6; Ephesians 4:3-6;)
One Lord

In John 14:6, Jesus Christ declared, “I Am the

Way, the Truth and the Life, no one comes to the
Father except by Me”. The preceding quotation
highlights the very unique Person and nature of
the Lord Jesus Christ. No other being (whether
THEME in heaven, on earth or under the earth) has the
“UNITED audacity to make such a de inite and
categorical statement. The Greek word
FOR
translated as “Lord”, is “Adonai”. The word –
GOD’S Adonai – also means Master. It refers to a
GLORY” person to whom one pays homage and takes
(John 17:21) instructions from. It is unusual and a show of
gross disrespect for someone to say “no” or
decline an instruction given by his/her master.
This is also exempli ied in the typical slave –
master relationship. It is unthinkable that the
slave will object or refuse to do the master's
bidding. Jesus Christ is our Adonai (Lord and
Master)

For us as believers in Christ, “there is no other

GHANA PENTECOSTAL
AND CHARISMATIC
God but one. For even if there are so-called gods,
COUNCIL, WEEK 2023 whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there
Page 5
are many gods and many lords), yet for us there is
one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and
we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through
whom are all things, and through whom we live”
(1 Corinthians 8:4b-6).

Our individual and collective allegiance for

worship and service is to the Lord Jesus Christ.
He suffered and died to save us and to make us
adopted into the beloved household of God. As
Lord over all His creation, He resurrected for
THEME our justi ication and is presently seated on the
right-hand of the Father interceding and
“UNITED advocating for us.
FOR
GOD’S One Faith
GLORY” Faith is one of the very important and key
(John 17:21) words very common to a Christian. “For by
grace you have been saved through faith, and
that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of
works, lest anyone should boast” (Ephesians 2:8-
9). Our faith is uni-directional; “in Christ Jesus”.
Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the
word of God (Romans 10:17). The Christian
must have his/her faith deeply grounded and
rooted in Christ, and in no other person or
thing. Hebrews 12:1-2 instructs us to put aside
GHANA PENTECOSTAL every other thing that hinders us from pursuing
AND CHARISMATIC
COUNCIL, WEEK 2023 to the end, the agenda that God has set for us.
Page 6
The scripture goes on to direct that we ix our
gaze on Jesus “the author and inisher of our
faith”. Jesus Christ is the beginning, the middle,
and the end of our faith. “Nor is there salvation
in any other, for there is no other name under
heaven given among men by which we must be
saved” (Acts 4:12).

For anyone to have eternal life, and be born into

the Kingdom of God, the person must believe
and have faith in Jesus Christ as the Son of God
THEME and the sacri icial Lamb, Who died to take away
the sins of the world. It does not matter the
“UNITED church denomination you belong to; if you are
FOR saved, then you must have believed in and
GOD’S surrendered your life and will to the Lord Jesus
GLORY” Christ by faith. There is no other way by which
anybody can be born of God into the Body of
(John 17:21)
Christ. Only one faith: Jesus Christ the Word of
God (John 1:1-4, 14-15).

One Baptism
Baptism means full, total and complete
immersion. In baptism, one is fully covered.
Every part of your body – including your hair –
must necessarily be submerged in the
baptismal process. There is no exception to
GHANA PENTECOSTAL any part of the body. One easy way of
AND CHARISMATIC
COUNCIL, WEEK 2023
explaining what baptism is like, is the burial of
Page 7 a dead body. In burial we ensure (and insist)
that the whole corpse is covered in the ground.
Our baptism in water signi ies that when we
came to Christ, the old nature died and was
(symbolically) fully buried with Christ. This is
symbolized by the total and complete
immersion of our body into water. But Christ
rose again from the dead in newness of power
and glory. Our being raised out of the water,
then signi ies that a new person (spiritually)
emerged or resurrected with Christ. this new
person also resurrects with Christ in newness
of life in power and glory (Romans 6:3-4).
THEME
“UNITED In water baptism, we portray the death of our
FOR old nature, and the emergence of a new
GOD’S creation in Christ. “Therefore, if anyone is in
GLORY” Christ, he is a new creation; old things have
(John 17:21) passed away; behold, all things have become
new” (2 Corinthians 5:17). One cannot come to
Christ a n d keep t he old n a t u re a live
(Colossians 3:1-10). The old nature (buried in
baptism) yielded to and was enslaved in sin.
The new creation (resurrected) in Christ,
yields to righteousness and honors God with
his/her life. The (physical) baptism that we
experience, signi ies a spiritual
transformation and miracle that only God
performs. Let us all as one, endeavor to walk in
GHANA PENTECOSTAL
AND CHARISMATIC the newness of life in Christ.
COUNCIL, WEEK 2023
Page 8
BENEFITS OF UNITY IN THE BODY
OF CHRIST (PSALM 133:1-3;
GENESIS 11:1-6;)
a. Demonstrate that we are God's
children
We are all God's children; thus, we cannot
be of the same family and be split. One of
the best ways to demonstrate to the world
that we have a common father is to
maintain our unity in Christ. God, who
dwells in harmony, is our father (Matthew
THEME 6:9; John 1:12-13, 20:17), and our brother
“UNITED Jesus is the Prince of Peace. Thus,
upholding unity is one of the ways we may
FOR show the world that we are, in fact, God's
GOD’S children and this beauty will draw others
GLORY” to him. Just as each part of the body has a
(John 17:21) speci ic function, but all the parts
cooperate to accomplish a common goal
(1 Corinthians 12:12–21) so is the church
made up of many separate parts but one.
Therefore, we in the GPCC (individuals
and denominations) are numerous and
diverse, but are uni ied for the sake of the
glory of Christ and share what Christ has.

b. Makes us strong and effective

GHANA PENTECOSTAL The Church can only effectively intercede,
AND CHARISMATIC
COUNCIL, WEEK 2023 receive strength for great deeds, and have
Page 9 our prayers answered when we are
united. The Bible records that after
being threatened and freed in Acts 4, the
Apostles Peter and John went to their
own friends and told them everything
the chief priests and elders had said to
them and when they heard that, they all
joined together to pray to God. (Acts
4:23-24).

c. Causes growth and maturity

Unity is an ingredient for growth and
THEME maturity in Christ. Entrenched
divisions, strife and envy are indications
“UNITED of immaturity and carnality (1
FOR Corinthians 3:3-4). The Lord Himself is
GOD’S working on us collectively to bring us all
GLORY” “to the unity of the faith and the
(John 17:21)
knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect
man, to the measure of the stature of the
fullness of Christ” (Ephesians 4:13).

d. Source of blessings to his Church

The blessings of God do not low to
places of division, strife and envy. On the
contrary, His blessings low to places of
unity and love; “how good and how
pleasant it is for brethren to dwell
GHANA PENTECOSTAL together in unity;” “for there the LORD
AND CHARISMATIC
COUNCIL, WEEK 2023
commanded the blessing”
Page 10 (Psalm 133:1, 3).
e. An avenue for God to show his might
God displays His strength and splendor
whenever His people unite in love and
unity of purpose. This, Christ prayed in
John 17:22 that His Church would be
one (have a common aim) and witness
His glory. When we preserve the unity
of the Spirit, the Church will be able to
experience God's outstanding grandeur.

WHERE THE LORD COMMANDS

THEME HIS BLESSINGS
“UNITED (Ps. 133:3; Jn. 17:21-23)
FOR Unity does not mean being physically at the
GOD’S same place all the time. Unity is not in a given
GLORY” place. Psalm 133:3 identi ies a place of God's
blessings. That place is the place of unity. Our
(John 17:21)
God acknowledges that when a people are
united in their purpose, nothing can stop them
from achieving that purpose (Genesis 11:6).

As the Body of Christ, we all do not have to be in

the same church denomination to show unity.
Across our various church denominations, we
can, and we must stand united in purpose for
the cause of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is in our
GHANA PENTECOSTAL unity as the Body of Christ that the blessings
AND CHARISMATIC
COUNCIL, WEEK 2023
and favour of God will be released on us as a
Page 11 whole.
Divisions, strife and envy among Christians and
churches are only indications of immaturity
and carnality (1 Corinthians 3:3-4). The Lord
Himself is working on us collectively to bring us
all “to the unity of the faith and the knowledge of
the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure
of the stature of the fullness of Christ”
(Ephesians 4:13). Christ, Who is the Head of
the Church, is working on us to “grow up in all
things into Him, from Whom the whole Body,
joined and knit together by what every joint
supplies, according to the effective working by
THEME
which every part does its share, causes growth of
“UNITED the body for the edifying of itself in love”
FOR (Ephesians 4:15-16).
GOD’S
GLORY” The different church denominations and
(John 17:21) ministries supply various nutrients to different
parts of the Body of Christ. when these
supplies are done right in love, contributes to
the strengthening and growth of the Church.

The blessings of God Almighty does not low to

places of division, strife and envy. On the
contrary, His blessings low to places of unity
and love; “how good and how pleasant it is for
brethren to dwell together in unity;” “for there
GHANA PENTECOSTAL
AND CHARISMATIC
the LORD commanded the blessing” (Psalm
COUNCIL, WEEK 2023 133:1, 3).
Page 12
KEEP THE UNITY OF THE SPIRIT
(Eph. 4:2-5; John 13:34-35;
Rom. 12:9-12)
The Church is physically situated within the
society. This means that we are not physically
immune to the happenings in the society
which we are physically part of. The prayer of
our Lord Jesus Christ as recorded in John 17:15
was to the effect that the Father should protect
the believers (the Church) from the evil one.
Undoubtedly, one of the schemes of the evil
THEME one is to in iltrate the Church unnoticed, to
“UNITED pollute the saints (Jude 1:4; Num. 11:4) and
FOR create disaffection and division among
GOD’S believers (Jude 1:19;). The Lord admonishes
GLORY” us to stay away from divisive persons and
(John 17:21)
rather cling to what is good and progressive
(Romans 16:17-18; 1 Peter 3:8). It is good and
rewarding to remain united.

Though Christ prayed the Father to protect us

from the evil one whiles we are still in this
world, we also have the responsibility of
making every effort to keep the unity of the
Spirit in the bond of peace (Ephesians 4:3). In
order to keep this unity which our Lord Jesus
GHANA PENTECOSTAL
AND CHARISMATIC
Christ so desired and prayed for, we must let
COUNCIL, WEEK 2023 brotherly love continue (Hebrews 13:1). We
Page 13 must continue doing good to all, especially to
those who are of the household of faith
(Galatians 6:10). Each of us, as disciples of the
Lord must be diligent in whatever we are
assigned in life so that we will not be dependent
on others; for each of us must carry his/her
own burden (Galatians 6:5) and yet have
enough strength to bear one another's burdens,
and so ful ill the law of Christ (Galatians 6:2).

UNITED FOR GOD'S GLORY

(Acts 2:1-3; 2 Sam. 5:1-7;
THEME John 17:21-23)
“UNITED Whenever the people of God stand together in
FOR unity of purpose and in love, God manifests His
GOD’S power and glory. This is why Christ prayed that
GLORY” the Church will be one (united in purpose) and
(John 17:21) will experience His glory (John 17:22). There is
no way that the Church can collectively
experience God's amazing glory when we make
exalt personal and self-interest above Christ's
will and interest; and His will and interest is
that His followers may be one (in purpose).

As mentioned earlier, the intention of Christ is

not for the entire Body of Christ to be one
church denomination; He used the ministries of
GHANA PENTECOSTAL
AND CHARISMATIC
various founding fathers to reach different
COUNCIL, WEEK 2023 people in different places and at different levels
Page 14
(1 Corinthians 1:13 and 3:3-6). Very often we
get ixated on the founders of our church
denominations. We must honor, celebrate and
learn from our founding fathers and leaders (1
Corinthians 4:15-16) but not to use this as an
occasion to create divisions, and in the process
inhibit the growth and progress of the Body of
Christ; for where there are divisions and strife
(sel ish interests), the devil manifests all kinds
of evil (James 3:16).

THEME God manifests His glory when His people are

“UNITED united. In the Acts of the Apostles, the early
church was blessed with the outpouring of the
FOR
promised Holy Spirit also because “they were
GOD’S all with one accord in one place” (Acts 2:1). The
GLORY” early church increased in numbers and in
(John 17:21) power because the Church was united in
purpose (Acts 2:40-47; 4:23-24).

The walls of Jericho came down when in a

united spirit , Israel followed God's
instructions given to Joshua. Indeed, when
sel ishness manifested through the sin of
Achan, Israel suffered an unexpected
humiliating defeat (Joshua 7:1-21). Israel
chalked some of their greatest war victories
GHANA PENTECOSTAL
AND CHARISMATIC recorded in the Old Testament when all the
COUNCIL, WEEK 2023
elders of Israel came to make David king over
Page 15
Israel and with oneness of heart declared
allegiance to him (2 Samuel 5:3). With
oneness of heart, today's Church must declare
total allegiance to Jesus Christ over and above
individual denominations.

CONCLUSION
It is the Lord Jesus Christ who conceived and
gave birth through the Holy Spirit to the
Church. the Church is the Body of Christ and
THEME He is the Head of the Church. We all as
“UNITED believers and disciples of Christ Jesus have
FOR been baptized in Him and belong to the
GOD’S household and family of God. We have been
GLORY” born again “not of (earthly) blood, nor of the
will of the lesh, nor of the will of man, but of
(John 17:21)
God” (John 1:13).

We are collectively heirs and joint heirs with

Christ (Romans 8:17) Who is our senior
Brother. Let us all “endeavor to keep the unity
of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one
Body and one Spirit, just as we were called in
one hope of our calling; one Lord, one faith, one
baptism; one God and Father of all, Who is above
GHANA PENTECOSTAL all and through all, and in us all” (Ephesians
AND CHARISMATIC
COUNCIL, WEEK 2023 4:3-6).
