CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

It is impossible to separate human need from the extremely rapid

growth of technology. Technology is not just available to adults; kids

may utilize it too. The existence of technical media, particularly

social media that leverages the internet, raises concerns about the

potential effects on families, necessitating research to get a clear

understanding. Families represent not only the environments in

which their members live, but also entire complex social systems.

Thus, family functioning refers to processes and interactions in which

members of the system are involved to meet their needs, make

decisions, define goals, and establish rules for themselves and the

system as a whole. Levels of communication openness and

interaction healthiness are distinguishing features of a family's ability

to function adequately, and they are associated with positive

outcomes at both the individual and family levels. With regard to

systems that include adolescents, mutual acceptance and open

communication among family members can aid in stress

management and negotiating adolescents' individuation by allowing

children to talk with their parents about daily concerns, activities,

METRO MANILA COLLEGE 2

issue, and in turn parents being adequately supportive of them.

Perceived efficacy in managing various aspects of daily relationships,

interactions, and tasks within the system plays a central role,

according to social cognitive theory. "members' beliefs in the

capabilities of their family to work together to promote each other's

development and well-being, maintain beneficial ties to extrafamilial

systems, and to exhibit resilience to adversity" is the definition of

family collective efficacy. According to research, a higher level of

collective family efficacy is associated with higher levels of family

contentment, effective parental monitoring, open communication,

and conflict resolution. This level of efficacy is a protective factor

that helps parents achieve positive outcomes for their family system

as a whole by managing the demands and issues of parenthood

(Flora Gatti 2019). According to Scott, the demise of conventional

families is a result of people growing more autonomous and

spending less time with their families. Understanding the

psychological mechanisms through which symbolic communications

affects human thinking, emotion, and behavior is of utmost

importance in today's culture where social media plays a significant

role. Human behavior is frequently described in terms of

Our Your Future

METRO MANILA COLLEGE 3

unidirectional causal relationships, in which actions are formed and

controlled either by internal or external forces. Social media is

generally regarded as a beneficial development, but it also seems to

be contributing to relationship issues, particularly those involving

communication, privacy, and time demands. According to Galasso-

Bonanno, social bolster can be a solid indicator of positive mental

wellbeing. Passionate back has been appeared to secure us from a

wide cluster of both psychiatric and physical afflictions. Be that as it

may, not all like online fellowship, real-life connections takes time

and exertion. They offer assistance for us to learn approximately

others and eventually ourselves. Based on the discussion above, it

was possible to identify a two-fold problem that served as a starting

point for the present investigation. As it has been noted above, one

problem area is a possible trend of developing online network

connections between families and friends instead of nurturing face to

face connections. While some individuals thrive on face to face

interactions, others use the convenience of social media to conduct

most of their communications. The second problem area involve

better understanding how social media impacts relationship

between families. In essence , communication styles vary

Our Your Future

METRO MANILA COLLEGE 4

considerably among older adults and young adult , as does personal

propensity to undertake efforts and of effective communication. It is

these differences that underlie the problem areas of this study. Once

relationships are established between family social networks and

social bonds, strategies can be explored to promote healthier

communication and interaction. Communication is a very important

in building healthier relationships. The findings of this study will

help raise awareness about the impact of social media on family

relationship.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Reviews literatures were taken from different books, articles,

newspaper articles, websites, and previous research. According to

Hertlein’s the ecological influences related to social media features,

the changes social media use brings with reference to family

structure, and the ones related to family processes are

interconnected and interdependent. Thus, due to the spread of new

ways of communicating and to the consequences they can bring with

reference to the functionality and habits of the family parents can

Our Your Future

METRO MANILA COLLEGE 5

have ambivalent perceptions about their impact on relationships and

communications with their adolescent children. Consistently, studies

about families, which include adolescents, brought ambivalent

results too, ranging from higher social support to lower family

cohesion and progressive isolation of family members within the

same house.

The ease with which social media allows for communication is a

huge benefit. It aids in the maintenance of family relationships.

Every social media platform supports video calls, audio calls,

messaging, and voice chats. It facilitates connecting family members

based on the user's preferences for video, audio, or voice chat based

on time and engagements in daily routines.

This can serve as a substitute for a formal meeting. If someone is

unable to meet, he or she can leave a voice message as an excuse,

which is far preferable to not interacting at all. Doing so maintains

family relationships.

Social media is a large platform for sharing your thoughts,

expressing yourself, staying up to date, and connecting with

changing trends, family, and friends. It had an impact on family

Our Your Future

METRO MANILA COLLEGE 6

relationships by decreasing genuine face-to-face communication and

interaction. However, it also facilitated family relationships. It has

the potential to positively impact our relationships. It is critical to

limit its use to specific occasions and times of day. As Erik Qualman

stated, "we don't have a choice on whether we do social media, the

question is how well we do it." Social media helps us connect

virtually, but it is negatively affecting family relationships.

The impact of social media on families has been studied to

determine the negative and positive effects. Psychologists are

becoming increasingly concerned that technology is destroying

family communication. It has the potential to deprive families of

attention, communication, and a sense of safety within the family

unit. Alone Together, a book by Sherry Turkle, discusses a study in

which parents and children were asked their thoughts on technology.

The end result was stunning. Many children reported that their

parents appeared to be addicted to their phone or computer.

Children expressed a desire for their parents to interact with them

and spend quality time with them. This study demonstrates the rise

of social media addiction in families as well as the need for more

family social interaction. (FairGaze 2023).

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

Figure 1

This study is supported by British psychologist Richard Gregory’s

Top-Down processing Theory where he stated, “Top-down theories

Our Your Future

METRO MANILA COLLEGE 8

are hypotheses-driven, and stress the importance of higher mental

processes such as expectations, beliefs, values, and social

influences” He explained that past experience and prior knowledge

related to a stimulus help us make inferences. For Gregory,

perception is all about making the best guess or a hypothesis about

what we see. Furthermore, in our study parents’ outlooks or

perceptions play a vital role in making decision in their child school-

related issues especially the implementation of limited Face-to-face

classes amidst the pandemic.

For them to trust the school administration in implementing

limited Face-to-face classes, parents must have a more positive

attitude towards the school and its staff, and gain more confidence

in assisting their children by being involved with their education.

Further researcher stated that, the ability of schools to adjust and

react to rapid societal changes is reflected in ‘parents’ satisfaction

with school. In general, the construct describes a situation in which

parents are satisfied with how schools handle their child’s education

or with more general school qualities and performance, such as

school infrastructures and communication.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study will be undertaken to find out the effects of social media

that affects relationship of families. The results of the study will be

of great benefits of the following:

Students The result will provide the students with some knowledge

on how technology may affect their relationship to their families.

Parents This study will benefit them to have deeper knowledge

about social media and its use.

Relatives Like parents, relatives too will be aware of the possible

effects of social media to the relationship of families.

Friends This research benefits their friends to prevent them from

misleading and improper use of social media.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This study mainly focuses on the impact of social media on family

Our Your Future

METRO MANILA COLLEGE 12

relationships. Our study will survey 100 respondents from 12 th grade

students in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at

Metro Manila College. The main purpose of this study is to identify

the common problems they face and suggest possible solutions

related to these studies.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

The following terms are defined conceptually for a better

understanding of the study.

Connection- A relationship in which a person, thing or idea is linked

or associated with something else.

Communication- Means of sending or receiving information such

as phone lines or computer

Discussion- This action or process of talking about something in

order to reach a decision or to exchange ideas.

Effects- A change which is a result or consequence of an action or

other cause.

Family- A group of one or more parents and their children living

together as a unit.

Our Your Future

METRO MANILA COLLEGE 13

Influence- The capacity to have an effect on the character,

development, or behavior of someone or something, or the effect

itself.

Relationship- The way in which two or more concepts, objects, or

people are connected, or the state of being connected

Social media- Websites and applications that enable users to

create and share content or to participate in social networking.

Support- Give assistance to, especially financially; enable to

function or act.

Society- The aggregate of people living together in a more or less

ordered community.

CHAPTER 2

METHODS

In this study, judgement (purposive) sampling is used in gathering

the needed data and information for the accomplishment of the

research. The methods used are composed of Research design,

Our Your Future

METRO MANILA COLLEGE 14

respondents, sampling technique, instrument used, construction and

retrieval of the research instrument, and statistical treatment of

data.

RESEARCH DESIGN

This study used a quantitative research method. This quantitative

study was designed to better understand the impact of social media.

Descriptive argument is a appropriate because this method aims to

describe, analyze and truly understand each persons’ perspective,

which is really useful in this study. This strategy helps to make the

research more detailed. Quantitative research includes objectives

and general results, as well as based on the treatment of various

probabilities and statistical theories supported by simulation and

empirical data (Guo S. 2013). Regression analysis is important in

modern statistical methods. Quantitative techniques can be applied

to any scientific study, from sampling to data processing. According

to Voxco, descriptive survey research is a method of gathering

relevant information and maintaining reliable information. It is a

lifesaving research method that also deals with people who are

focused of the research and examines more than one variable.

Our Your Future

METRO MANILA COLLEGE 15

RESPONDENTS

The respondents of our study are the selected Grade 12-HUMSS

students of Metro Manila College in the school year 2022-2023. They

are the ones who have enough knowledge to answer the problems

posed in our study. We need at least 100 HUMSS students to

become our respondents in our study so we are conducting a survey

and asking for some information regarding their current situations

about their family.

SAMPLING TECHNIQUE

A sampling technique is used to acquire samples in the study, the

researcher used a purposive sampling technique that was drawn to

recruit a selected participant— individuals or groups of individuals

with proficiency and well-informed about a phenomenon of interest.

Purposive sampling is the process of selecting samples by taking

subjects that are chosen for their specific purpose instead of their

level or area. (Arikunto 2010).

Our Your Future

METRO MANILA COLLEGE 16

INSTRUMENT USED

In this study, the researcher will use a survey question in gathering

information from the respondents. The researcher will distribute the

survey to the students at Metro Manila College and the data will be

gathered and collected from the respondents face-to-face.

CONSTRUCTION AND VALIDATION OF INSTRUMENT

Reading and reviewing relevant material and studies was done by

the researchers. The development and creation of the questionnaire

was based on the problems with the study that the researchers had

gathered. To develop a better method of designing questions,

discussions with the research adviser and instructor were held. The

researchers thought there were enough elements to address every

facet and every query raised by the problem statement. The

concerns in the tool are appropriate and crucial to the topic matter

and were designed so that participants could anticipate the

synchronized series of pertinent inquiries. The researchers next

provided. Their adviser reviewed and edited the questionnaire before

it was released.

Our Your Future

METRO MANILA COLLEGE 17

ADMINISTRATION AND RETRIEVAL OF THE INSTRUMENT

The researcher will confer the approval to further conduct the

research to the respondent's parent/guardian or teacher. Thereafter,

questionnaires will be distributed by the researcher to lay a question

of and will further explain to the respondents the content of the

questionnaires. Respondents will only have limited time to answer

the questionnaires to avoid consuming their time any further.

STATISTICAL TREATMENT OF THE DATA

Thenceforth, the gathered data will be methodized and subjected to

statistical treatment to further answer the questions proposed in the

study.
