ANOVA is used as a test of means for two or more populations.

Problem Statement
A pharmaceutical company conducts an experiment to test the effect of a new cholesterol
medication. The company selects 15 subjects randomly from a larger population. Each subject is
randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups. Within each treament group, subjects receive
a different dose of the new medication. In Group 1, subjects receive 0 mg/day; in Group 2, 50
mg/day; and in Group 3, 100 mg/day.
The treatment levels represent all the levels of interest to the experimenter, so this
experiment used a fixed-effects model to select treatment levels for study.
After 30 days, doctors measure the cholesterol level of each subject. The results for all 15
subjects appear in the table below:

Dosage
0 mg 50 mg 100 mg
210 210 180
240 240 210
270 240 210
270 270 210
300 270 240

A chemical engineer wants to compare the hardness of four blends of paint. Six samples of
each paint blend were applied to a piece of metal. The pieces of metal were cured. Then each
sample was measured for hardness. In order to test for the equality of means and to assess the
differences between pairs of means, the analyst uses one-way ANOVA.

Suppose the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) wants to examine the safety of
compact cars, midsize cars, and full-size cars. It collects a sample of three for each of the
treatments (cars types). Using the hypothetical data provided below, test whether the mean
pressure applied to the driver’s head during a crash test is equal for each types of car. Use α =5%.

The company will be interested in identifying if there are any differences among the agents.
So the source of variation of interest here is AGENTS. In other words, we are interested in one
factor or one-way analysis of variance.

An article in Nature describes an experiment to investigate the effect of consuming

chocolate on cardiovascular health (“Plasma Antioxidants from Chocolate,” Nature, Vol. 424,
2003, pp. 1013). The experiment consisted of using three different types of chocolates: 100 g of
dark chocolate, 100 g of dark chocolate with 200 mL of full-fat milk, and 200 g of milk chocolate.
A total of 12 subjects were used, 7 women and 5 men, with an average age range of 32.2 ± 1 years,
an average weight of 65.8 ± 3.1 kg, and body-mass index of 21.9 ± 0.4 kg m−2. On different days
a subject consumed one of the chocolate-factor levels and 1 hour later the total antioxidant
capacity of their blood plasma was measured in an assay. Data similar to that summarized in the
article are shown in Table.
