Introduction
Tekomar XPERT (XPERT) is the application for structured recording and intelligent analysis of engine
and ship performance data. Performance Readings from one to many equipment(s) of installations
(ships) in a fleet can be handled. After normalization and ISO-corrections, Readings are evaluated
against the (shop test / sea trial) reference and/or makers' limits. In Evaluation, resulting deviations
are highlighted and comments and recommendations are generated. Optimization potential derived
from the measurement is calculated.
Equipment of different type and make can be easily compared in (Comparison). The Evaluation
results are listed in a synoptic table, using only the deviations classification (low, normal , high).
Both the Evaluation and the Comparison can be compiled into a PDF report, where also the Reading ,
the Performance Curve chart and optionally Trend charts are appended.

Activation
After successful installation, activate the software with a purchased subscription or trial license.
The only requirement for activation is a license file *.tpl. If a product key supplied with an earlier
version (before 2.7) is available, this key can be used alternatively.
Note: Missing license files can be requested from CH-support.tekomar@abb.com
Start the activation process: About -> License -> Activate.
Trial version
Having a timely limited trial version, the application will lock the Installations after trial period
expiration (Installations appear as grayed-out and Readings are only available in read-only mode). In
such case the activation has to be executed again. To activate the software with a new / modified
license file go to About -> License -> Change license. This will deactivate the software and activation
must be performed again.
Subscription license
Activation is handled by one license file *.tpl, but set on Installation level. Accordingly, each
Installation may have an own expiration date (limited license), or be licensed for lifetime.
If the license for an Installation has expired, the Installation will be listed as grayed-out and related
Readings are only available in read-only mode.
Once the subscription is renewed (ABB Turbo Systems will contact you prior to the license expiration
date), there are two ways to obtain the new license:
· Upon connection to the Cloud Workspace, the application automatically downloads the updated
license file
· Without Internet connection, use the *.tpl license file which is sent by E-mail (contact your
administrator), refer to Activation
Settings
In the tab Settings, initial actions like setti ng the Workspace location or adding Configurations are
performed. Additional options for customization are also available here.
Workspace location
The Workspace location is the folder in file system or a database where all configurations (*.tpi, in
sub-folder "Installations") and Readings (*.tpr in sub-folder "Readings") are stored.
Configurations
Each Installation (ship) in the software is defined by a configuration. Configurations can be loaded by
either importing a *.tpi configuration file, or from the Installation Repository (Tekomar web server).
You can always try to obtain the configuration(s) online using the Update Installations function in tab
Settings, below the Workspace location.
Without an Internet connection, the Configuration can be loaded as file *.tpi. Use the function Add
next to the filter section in the main page.
Note: It is recommended to always use the most recent version. Compare dates in Installation
Repository (online) or file name ([SHIPNAME]_[ID]_yymmddhhmmss.tpi)
Sending files
For transmission of Readings between locations (e.g. vessel to onshore office), you may use the
button Export.
Opening files
1. The files selected for opening are listed in this dialog (check boxes are checked by default):
Using the Tekomar Cloud Workspace (included in subscription licenses) enables all users to connect
to the same Workspace no matter where they are located geographically.
For setti ng up the connection to the Tekomar Cloud Workspace in the application, please refer to
Workspace location.
ABB Turbo Systems provides, as add-on to the Tekomar Cloud Workspace, a web service that is useful
if users don't have an active internet connection, but the ability to send e-mails with attachments.
If users send *.tpr Readings as attachments to cloud.tpe@tekomar.com and the service is enabled for
the related Installations, the following actions/responses are generated by the service.

Duplicate Readings
If *.tpr Reading files are placed in the Workspace location sub-folder Readings manually (i.e. not by
the application via import), it is possible that one Reading (identified by an internal ID) exists as more
than one copy. The file-system allows this if the file name is different, but the application will by
default only load the most recent reading. If such duplicates exist, at Workspace initialization
(application start-up), this dialog will be shown unless the duplicates are cleaned up:
Important: If you are sharing a Workspace with other users, it is advisable to coordinate who is taking
care of the duplicate removal and that the other users are not using XPERT linked to this Workspace
at the same time. To skip removing duplicates (and continue working with the most recent Readings),
click Ignore.
Note: It can be challenging to decide which version of the Reading to keep. You may need to look in
to the Reading data first. To do so, setup a (temporary) second Workspace and view all versions of the
Reading (Import->Overwrite->Readings->Edit).
Removing the duplicates using the displayed dialog:
· For each pair of duplicates, select the one to keep. By default, the one having the more recent
change date is selected.
· Click Resolve duplicates. The not selected files will be moved to the folder
[Workspace]/Readings/Duplicates.
Note: In very rare cases it may happen that also duplicate Installations exist in the Workspace.
Resolving duplicate Installations works in the same way as described above for Readings. Duplicate
*.tpi Installation files would be moved to [Workspace]/Installations/Duplicates.
Fleets
If many Installations are to be handled, it may be convenient to group them in Fleets. Fleets are
defined on every user profile individually. It is a client side restriction of the current view and has no
impact on data storage.
Important: If several Workspace locations are used, it may happen that Fleets are being displayed as
empty because the allocated Installations are in a different Workspaces. This is no issue - just be
aware not to delete a Fleet because with the current Workspace Location setti ng the installations are
displayed as UNKONWN.
Depending on your license type, the application may already provide fleets in the drop-down. This
information is retrieved from the server upon connection with the cloud workspace and can only be
changed by the administrator. You may create custom fleets additionally.
Changing Fleets
Either go to tab Settings -> Fleets -> Edit, or click on Edit fleets directly in the main window.
Automatic updates
By default, application updates will be checked, downloaded and installed on a 2 weeks poll interval.
You can change the update policy in tab Settings -> Automatic Updates:
· Automatic
· Check only
· Disabled
Note: If the option check only is selected and you initiate the update, you may have to run the update
several times until all incremental update packages - downloaded but not installed - are applied and
the latest version is installed.
Updates
New application versions or Configurations can be retrieved in two ways, depending on the
availability of an Internet connection.
We recommend to always use the latest version of both, Software and Configuration.
Online
Online application updates can be triggered (check, download and installation) in tab About.
Make sure to allow these applications internet access and/or elevated privileges when prompted:
· wyUpdate.exe (will check for application updates)
The frequency of automatic updates can be defined in tab Settings.
For Configuration updates, go to tab Settings -> Workspace location -> Update Installations.
Offline
Application update packages for off-line updates can be downloaded as “.zip” file and sent by e-mail
or CD-ROM to off-line sites.
Important: Only download the off-line updater package corresponding to the currently installed
version (see About -> Version), the update will fail otherwise!
Running the off-line update:
1. Extract all files in the *.zip package to a folder on your hard drive. Consider procedures described
in README.txt
2. Run the batch file ..._OfflineUpdater.bat.
User interface
The main menu consists of only 3 pages: Home, Settings and About. In the Home page, all operational
data and related actions are directly available.
The upper part of the window displays the Time-line control. The first 3 columns in the left display
available Installations, their Equipment and equipment type. Each column can be filtered to restrict
the view - just type in the heading row to filter by "contains". To the right of it, existing Readings for
equipment are displayed as colored markers, on the date of recording (set in the Reading). The color
of the marker indicates the fuel oil saving potential. In the top-right, above the time-line, find filters
for view restriction and KPI:
· Fleets: list/hide Installations as set-up in Fleet Editor
· Activity filter: list/hide Equipment depending on date of last Reading
· Potential filter: list/hide Equipment depending on fuel oil saving potential
The button Compare will trigger a comparison of the last Reading for all visible (depending on the
filters) Equipment.
To add either, Configuration (*.tpi) or Reading (*.tpr) to the current workspace, click on Add, select
the file(s) in the file chooser dialog and follow the steps in the Add from file dialog.
Use the footer of the time-line to set the visible date range by either selecting from the date
selection drop down, or, mouse-wheel scroll in/out on the x-axis date labels. The horizontal divider
below the time-line control can be moved to adjust the vertical split.
The lower part of the window contains the list-box "Readings" where Readings for the selected
(highlighted) Equipment are listed in tabular layout. The headings vary depending on the selection
(one or many equipments) and can be used for sorting. Just above the list-box in the right, find
actions related to the selected equipment.
· New: Create a new Reading for the selected Equipment
· Print blank Reading: Get a PDF for printout and filling in during visual inspection of the
equipment
Note: These are the only active controls when starting from scratch (no Readings in workspace or no
Readings selected) and an Equipment is selected.
Actions for the selected Readings are arranged in the bottom-right of the list-box:
· Edit: Open the selected Reading in the Reading page
· Export: Get a list of export actions, see Sending files

Readings
Find the list-box with readings in the lower part of the main window. The number of Readings listed
depends on the currently selected Equipment(s).
Below the list-box Readings, find actions related to one or multiple, currently selected Readings:
· New: Creates a new Reading and opens the Reading page (input form).
· Edit: Opens the Reading in the Reading page. Note: There is no View button.
· Export: Shows actions for file export (see Sending Files).
· Delete: Permanently deletes the Reading.
Note: Multiple selections on Installations, Equipment or Readings can always be made by pressing
the Ctrl or Shift key.
· Print blank Reading: Opens a blank input form in the PDF viewer. For printout and hand-written
recording.
Page Reading
The page Reading is the data input and display form. It consists of a general group, containing primary
information like recording date/time and title (these values are used in the tab Readings for later
identification in the list-box), and groups for each section of the engine.
Calculated fields can normally not be overwritten. In some cases, they are editable and instead of the
default calculated value, the user can make an input. Removing the input from such field will trigger
calculation of the default value again.
Moving from one input field to the next can be done by Tab or Enter key (or of course with the mouse
cursor).
Note: Always measure and record the values in the unit displayed in the form.
Calculations
On the right side are all yellow input fields. Typically, the input for several cylinders / turbochargers
is aggregated to an average value (AVG.).
If any theoretical relationship allows, the AVG is computed by (e.g.) ISO-correction to a calculated
value (CALC.).
In the left-most column, the reference value (REF.) is shown. This value is derived from underlying
baselines and user input.
CALC. and REF. values can be compared directly, because both are now free from ambient conditions,
etc. influence. The deviation of the CALC. value from REF., depending on the set limits, is visible as
classification - a traffic light. Also refer to Technical Aspects.
Performance curves
The Performance Curves chart can be accessed from various pages. One common use can be that
during / after filling in a Reading, the Performance Curves chart is used to immediately get an
overview of the situation.
In the top-left corner of the Reading page, select the corresponding icon. Also from the main
window, the Performance Curves chart can be opened directly (for selected Readings) by the button
Curves.
Display features
· Zoom in/out: Press CTRL + scroll the mouse wheel / touch pad. Zooming in is also possible by
CTRL+Double-Click
· Zoom to fit: Reset the zoom to default. The button is in the top-left corner of the chart.
Alternatively, press F4 when the chart is active.
· Pan: Press mouse-left on the display and drag to move it.
· Magnify: Press CTRL and select an area of the chart display to zoom enlarge that area to full
display size.
· Tool-tip text: On mouse over, the description of the data point / line and detail reading
information is shown.
· Context menu: Right click to copy a screen shot of the chart display to Clipboard, or to save the
screens hot to file. This will capture the current (zoomed or magnified) view.
Data
Reference lines are drawing baselines over the whole load range.
Data points are (if applicable) always ISO-corrected. The colour of the data point (only for the
average of all units) indicates the deviation class (also visible in the Reading page). If the ISO-
correction is not possible because of missing input, the colour of the data point turns grey.
Where applicable, data points are plotted for each Cylinder / Turbocharger. Additionally, displayed is
always the average value of all units. Use the mouse pointer to get tool-tip information about the
points.
There can be multiple reference lines for the same indication. Depending on the selected option
(AUX BLOWER operation, Count T/C in operation) one or the other line applies.
Note: When analyzing the chart, pay attention to the colour of the data points. Even for Readings
taken at similar loads different reference lines may apply. The colour of the data point will make this
relation more visible.
Axis and grid
Both axis and grids are automatically generated. There is no option to modify the appearance (except
zoom and pan).
Horizontal lines (blue when selected)
The points of a Reading are connected by a vertical line. The line is labelled with the sequential
number of the selected readings. Double-click the line to open the corresponding Reading.
Size and aspect ratio
If the screen has low vertical resolution, consider printing the Performance Curves chart as PDF. This
will change the aspect ratio to the default A4 portrait on the printout.
Trending
The Trending chart can be opened from the main window. The time interval reflected in the trend is
always determined by the dates of the selected Readings. Accordingly, to start the trending chart,
first select multiple Readings (use Ctrl or Shift) in the main window and click on Charts -> Trending.
The Trending chart inherits many features of the Performance curves chart. Please refer to there for
explanation of basic functionality.
· Display: This control lets you set the visibility of markers, lines and trend lines for the current
view. Changes are not persistently saved, i.e. the chart will always load using the default
setti ngs.
· Drop-down: Switch to other Trending charts directly without leaving the Trending window.
· Indication and measure: Each graph in the chart has its own y-Axis incl. description and unit. The
description is amended by the type of measure:
o Rel. deviation: (MEASURED - REFERENCE) / REFERENCE (as percentage)
o Deviation: MEASURED - REFERENCE
o No amendment: MEASURED
· Mouse-over: Moving the mouse cursor over a vertical line highlights all points of the same
Reading. Moving the cursor over a data line highlights the markers and line of the unit (Cylinder /
Turbocharger) in all graphs.
Note: Trending is always performed on highly normalized data. Underlying data is (ISO-) corrected
where applicable. Most of the trends are based on calculated deviations of the indications compared
to their references. Since the references are reflecting the ideal operation point considering site
conditions and load, all ambient- and other influences are eliminated. This concept makes the use of
filters obsolete. However, since all trends are based on the selection of Readings in the main
window, it is possible to use the headings of the list-box readings for sorting and only select the
Readings which fall into the desired range of an indication (e.g. load <50%).
The MAN CoCoS EDS system, optionally applied on MAN B&W MC- and ME engines, has the
possibility to export CSV data files which can imported to XPERT for Engines.
Note: The availability of this feature in XPERT depends on the configuration (*.tpi)
To extract the data from CoCos EDS perform the following in CoCoS:
1. System -> Enter Password -> type Chief
This will enable the export.
2. Monitor -> click Line Recorder
The Trend View window is displayed.
3. Select the time range (e.g. 30 min) and make
sure to only include data where load
conditions were stable.
This selection will be shown in enlarged view.
11. Click Export. The screen of CoCoS may freeze for some time (up to one minute) until the file is
written completely to the above selected path.
12. Once this file is transferred to the computer where TPE runs, pick this file in a new or existing
Reading:
Import -> MAN CoCos (all unit systems)
Note: Importing data to a Reading will overwrite any existing data in the Reading's corresponding
fields.
Combustion Monitoring
Cylinder pressure measurements taken by a digital cylinder pressure indication device (DPI) can be
imported, evaluated, saved and applied to a performance reading.
DPI devices record the cylinder pressure over the whole cycle(s) and store it in a proprietary file or
CSV (text) export file. This raw data will be processed in XPERT. The purpose of this module is not to
import the already evaluated values of firing pressure, calculated compression pressure and mean
indicated pressures.
General
· Apply to Reading: Update the performance reading with the imported / calculated values.
Display: Control the visibility of derivative or compression curve, visible range.
Engine Parameters: Configured geometry parameters of the engine. If possible, verify correctness.
Engine: Displays the value of Charge / Scavenge air pressure in both the Reading and the cylinder
pressure curve data (calculated). Set the effective value here (will shift the curve and values
vertically).
Import data
Note: As a prerequisite, depending on the device type/make, it may not be sufficient to locate the
data file on the hard drive, but to run on the device's software a data export first before the data can
be imported.
TEKOMAR TCM-S: No files required. Software will detect the device and read from it
automatically when connected, see TCM-S

** Note: Delimiters used in the CSV format depend on your OS locale, i.e. you will have to use the
corresponding import for reading it ("...comma delimited" or "...semicolon delimited).
Evaluate
Evaluating cylinder pressure data in the Combustion Monitoring page means to apply the actual TDC
shift to the x-axis. Depending on the DPI device, the data may be already tuned fine, or extensive
shift may be required.
Note: XPERT Combustion Monitoring utilizes the data from devices using only the raw x and y values.
If the device (or its software) has already calculated the TDC adjustment, this information will be
ignored. It is not necessarily an indication of the measurement's quality if the measured data is not
well adjusted after import. However, large deviations from TDC may be an indication of the TDC-
signal sensor not being connected to the indication device.
An example of measured data right after import (no TDC shift applied):
Performing the Auto adjust TDC will calculate the actual TDC based on the theoretical compression
pressure curve (simulating a cycle without injection/combustion).
In cases like above where the injection is early before TDC (and therefore the combustion can be
seen free of injection/combustion energy) the result will be straight forward. To check the
correctness, the compression pressure curves shall be displayed (Show compression).
In cases where the automatic TDC adjustment does not produce satisfactory results, proceed like this
for each cylinder unit:
1. Place the cursor in the field TDC [°CA]
2. Use the keyboard keys up- or down-arrow to change the value. Alternatively, use the arrows next
to the input field.
3. Observe the (highlighted) curves. The target is that (dotted) theoretical compression curve and
measured cylinder pressure curves become congruent (having the best overlap in the range of -30 to
0 °CA).
Note: If the injection timing is set to start the injection before TDC, the curves will only match in a
range before the injection start. Also consider that compression pressure and measured pressure at
actual TDC are not the same then!
If the manual adjustment fails, use Reset TDC (to values as imported originally) and start all over.
Manual (same as automatic adjustment) to TDC is only possible in a limited range. The engine
geometry parameters are very important for this calculation; therefore these are already
programmed and cannot be changed by the user.
Finally, to make any changes on this page persistent, click Save.
To apply the Combustion Monitoring evaluation result to the Reading, click Apply to Reading which
opens a window with an overview and controls:
For each indication, the values from Combustion Monitoring evaluation, and the values currently
present in the reading (blank if it was a new Reading) are listed. Select in the header row which
values to apply.
Click Ok to modify the Reading's corresponding fields and then close the Combustion Monitoring
page to return to the Reading.
Technical aspects
This section applies to Engines. The results from the application are accurate under the condition that
the originally recorded data is correct and coherent. A few things must be kept in mind during
recording to ensure the highest possible level of data quality:
· Engine load must be stable for at least 10 minutes before the recording starts and during the
entire measurement. Measuring under heavy sea condition, in shallow water or with frequent
strong rudder movements will not produce reliable results.
· Even though the application will be able to evaluate at any engine load, preferably record in a
normal service load range.
· Make sure all necessary indication instruments are in good working order.
· Record all data required on the Reading page - this will give the most accurate results. However,
missing values will not lead to wrong calculation. In general, if input is missing, calculations will
not be performed.
For practical, step-by-step instructions, please also refer to the Operators Guide:
· Engines
Basics
A baseline is a polynomial function derived from readings made at test run. Typically, the baseline
for an engine is calculated from shop-test readings. All values are ISO corrected [1]. The function is
the reference for later comparison of measurements.
The input for the baseline function is in general the engine load (or a combination of it with other
input). The result of it is a reference (REF. in the Reading page) value is what is to be expected for the
parameter if the engine would be running exactly according specification and as during baseline
measurement.
Each baseline has absolute or relative limits. If a compared value [2] (ISO corrected [3]) falls outside
of the respective range, the deviation is classified into high or low, and the indication will be listed in
the Evaluation reports. The classification (traffic-light) in the Reading page is also determined from
here.
ISO correction
To make Readings recorded at different time - and consequentially different ambient conditions -
comparable, certain values need to be corrected to ISO conditions.
ISO conditions are:
Measuring
When taking the readings on the engine, pay attention to the below hints.
AUX BLOWER operation: Select if the auxiliary blower is running or not during the measurement. This
influences the reference values applied. This applies to 2-stroke engines only.
Air temp. BLOWER in: The temperature of the suction air at the turbocharger air inlet grid. This
temperature is unevenly distributed around the suction grid. For best results, measure the
temperatures at 4 locations around the suction grids and use the average value. The value is
important input for ISO-correction.
Count TC in operation: If (only for 2-stroke engines) a turbocharger can be cut-out automatically or is
blinded permanently, select the number of turbochargers in operation during the Reading. This
influences the reference values applied.
Limits for fuel type: Select on which fuel the engine is operated. Possible input is Heavy Fuel Oil
(HFO) or Marine Diesel Oil (MDO). This influences references calculations and limits for exhaust gas
temperatures and fuel oil viscosity/temp. Default is HFO. Note that for fuels with typical viscosity
lower that for MDO (e.g. GDO), the option MDO is to be selected.
Fuel properties, LCV: Lower calorific value of fuel oil. To be taken from the laboratory analysis of fuel
oil in use during the Reading. Make sure to enter it as kJ/kg.
Fuel properties, Density: Specific gravity of the fuel oil. Use kg/m3.
Fuel properties, Viscosity: Read normally on the instrument of the fuel temperature controller.
Fuel properties, Sulfur content: Relevant for calculation of REF. cylinder lubrication feed rate (2-
stroke engines only). Sulfur contents of more than 3% will raise the recommended nominal feed
rate.
Fuel oil system, Temp ENGINE in: Read normally on the instrument of the fuel temperature
controller. Relevant for calculating fuel density and eventually Fuel Index correction. The REF. is
calculated from the "Limits for fuel type" switch, and (in case of HFO) the fuel oil analysis viscosity at
50°C. Expected fuel oil viscosity is calculated based on this input.
Fuel oil system, Temp FLOWMETER: Relevant for calculating fuel consumption as mass flow (t/h) from
measured volume flow (m3/h).
Fuel oil, Absolute consumption: Select the input unit. Depending on the selection, additional
parameters may be required. Net of supply line and return line.
Optimization potential
The Engine Evaluation report lists for various indications the potential compared to REF conditions:
· Fuel: Specific fuel oil consumption, potential saving (=lower operation cost, better efficiency)
· Cylinder lub. oil: Lower operation cost, better efficiency
Important: The potential saving / reduction is calculated from the deviation of the indication's
measured value MEAS (or if applicable CALC.) and its reference REF. In this relation, it is irrelevant
what deviation in consumption is effectively measured. It is well possible that e.g. specific fuel oil
consumption is in the normal range and still an optimization potential is calculated (e.g. from slightly
too low firing press. or to high charge. air temp.).
Power estimation
The accurate determination of the engine power is of central importance for engine performance
analysis. One reliable source of power determination is a shaft torsiometer. This is however not
installed on all engines, and even if it is available, there may be doubts about its accuracy.
Application version 2.6.0 and configuration release C.16 (or higher) does no longer require user
interaction for determination of power estimation methods to be used. An advanced algorithm will
calculate the XPERT power and use this by default. The below procedure can be skipped accordingly.
The Reading page offers a smart and easy-to-use way of determining engine power. It features all
possible ways of determining engine power and permits to choose which method to use and which
to exclude.
Note: Calculation results are only available after that the respective values have been entered into
the respective fields. Since all these are ISO-corrected, also ambient condition and engine power
used for initial calculation need to be set.
The following estimation methods are available (all prefixed power estimation by):
· MOP / WECS: Estimated power by engine control, user input as load %
· TORSIOM.: If installed and calibrated correctly, torsiometer measurement is very reliable.
· FI*rpm: The product of fuel index and engine speed. Is a good approximation, provided the (in
case of mechanical systems) fuel regulating linkage is not worn out and the fuel oil properties are
correctly entered.
· pscav: Scavenge air pressure is approximately proportional to the engine load and serves as a
good indicator.
· TC rpm: Turbocharger speed is to be considered as good indicator for engine power.
· MEP: Mean effective pressure. If an electronic cylinder pressure measuring device is available,
the mean indicated pressure (MIP) can be used to calculate the MEP and accordingly the effective
power. Consider that this measurement must be conducted at the very same time as the rest of
the record, and that configuration and adjustment during the measurement are of high
importance. Can only be considered as exact if the MIP is measured/calculated reliably. Excluded
by default.
· rpm: Engine speed is only a very rough power estimation method. If no other input is available, it
will display the engine power at (theoretical) 5% sea margin.
7. Repeat the last step until (usually after a few iteration steps only) the two fields are close
to equal.
Note: If the difference between Engine power estimated and Engine power effective is higher than
5%, the classification in the AVG field will turn yellow. This is a sign of data inconsistency and will be
listed as deviation in the Engine Evaluation report as Engine power validation.

Ship Performance
Page Reading
The speed on water (Log speed) is the most important and sensitive input for accurate Ship
Performance Evaluation. It is recommended to take the average ship speed over water during at least
one hour. The same applies to M/E speed, power and fuel oil consumption.
The MAIN ENGINE fuel saving potential is to be taken from the corresponding Tekomar XPERT for
Engines Evaluation.
To calculate the current Ship's Energy Efficiency Operational Index (EEOI) it is necessary to
additionally record the SHIP's cargo, fuel oil consumption of the DIESEL GENERATORS and BOILER.
Depending on the ship type, the cargo can be either tonnage (t) or TEU.
Calculations:
The measured (column MEAS) M/E shaft power, speed and fuel consumption are converted (column
CALC.) to reference conditions. For this conversion the current sea condition (wind, wind direction,
wave height, water under keel) and vessel draft are part of the necessary program inputs. The
applied ship reference (column REF) is based on the official SEATRIAL record at new VESSEL condition
converted to design draft and calm sea (no wind, no wave and infinite water under keel), respectively
the M/E shop trail for consumption. In the last row of the table, the same calculation is made based
on the CHARTER CONTRACT. The evaluation is made at constant ship speed over water as set for the
current measurement. It always compares the normalized values in CALC. with the reference value in
REF.
Performance curves
Please refer to Performance curves paragraph above for general features of the chart.
All displayed points and curves are corrected to the listed CHARTER CONTRACT conditions (or
SEATRIAL if this label is not present).
Evaluation
The first section lists the measured fuel oil consumption (by flow-meter, tank sounding, etc.) and the
corrections to CHARTER CONTRACT conditions.
· REF: SEATRIAL and CHARTER CONTRACT fuel oil consumption at current ship speed (Log) and
CHARTER CONTRACT conditions
· CALC.: Draft, wind, sea, etc. corrected (to CHARTER CONTRACT conditions) fuel oil consumption,
at current ship speed
· MEAS: Measured consumption and corrections
The second section lists calculated deviations in fuel oil consumption based on M/E power compared
to SEATRIAL (at design conditions). This is computed from measured M/E power, draft, sea and wind
conditions and completely independent from the measured fuel oil consumption.
· HULL condition: FOC deviation calculated from higher M/E power caused by HULL aging
· PROPELLER condition: FOC deviation calculated from higher M/E power caused by PROPELLER
aging
· MAIN ENGINE operation point: Influence of operation point (sea margin) to MAIN ENGINE fuel
consumption
· Potential MAIN ENGINE: Transferred from M/E Evaluation in TPE for Engines
Note: Engine internal optimization potential is to be evaluated in TPE engines. The result (g/kWh) is
recorded in the Reading page. Potential MAIN ENGINE shows this value converted to absolute value
t/d.
The third section compares the result from the first two sections.
· MEASURED: CALC fuel oil consumption - REF fuel oil consumption
· ESTIMATED: fuel oil consumption at CALC M/E power - fuel oil consumption at REF M/E power
· DIFFERENCE: is likely not exactly 0 and to be explained as measurement (or input) error
Energy efficiency
The Ship's Energy Efficiency Operation Index (EEOI) is a key figure to benchmark the ship in regard of
emitted CO2 emissions (fuel consumption) per transported cargo (tonnes, TEU) and nautical mile
(ground).
As defined by the authorities (International Maritime Organisation), the EEOI (MEASURED) is based on
the effective measured total fuel consumption (incl. ancillary system, without ISO correction) at
current ship speed, sea condition and draft. With this procedure ships efficiency at current tonnage,
vessel and sea condition is indicated.
The following inputs are required to calculated the EEOI:
· SHIP current cargo/tonnage
· DIESEL GENERATOR and BOILER current fuel oil consumption
· Recovered waste heat (WHR) power (if applicable)
For evaluation, a virtual reference EEOI over the whole vessel speed range is drawn in Performance
Curves chart. This virtual EEOI is based on reference condition (design cargo, design draft, clean hull,
calm sea, ISO corrected fuel oil consumption).
The IMO reference limit respectively Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) is a guidance value for
new buildings in the phase 0 (2013-01-01 to 2014-12-31). The index is only valid for the design speed
and cannot be directly compared with the measured EEOI. But it can be additionally used as
benchmark for the currently measured EEOI.
