Experiment 20

AIM - The aim of this experiment is to determine the strength of potassium permanganate by
titrating it against a standard solution of M / 40 mohr’s salt

MARERIAL SREQUIRED:-

Burette mohar salt

Burette Stand, unknown kmno4
Pipette Titration flask,
Test tube, Funnel,
Beaker,

REACTION
Oxidation half reaction – [Fe2+ → Fe3+ + e–] x 5
Reduction half reaction – MnO4– + 8H+ + 5e– → Mn2+ + 4H2O
Overall ionic equation – MnO4– + 8H+ + 5Fe2+ → Mn2+ + 5Fe3+ + 4H2O

Overall reaction –

2KMnO4 + 10FeSO4(NH4)2SO4.6H2O+ 8H2SO4 → K2SO4+ 2MnSO4+ 5Fe2(SO4)3+ 10(NH4)2SO4+

68H2O

Preparation of 100ml of M \ 40 Mohr’s salt solution

Molar mass of Mohr’s salt 392 g/mol

Amount of Mohr salt required to prepare 100 ml of M/40 solution
Wb = M x Mb x V
1000
Wb = 0.025 x 392 x100
1000 Wb = 0.98 gm in 100 ml water .

1. In burette – KMnO4 solution

2. In Conical flask – 10ml of mohr salt + sulphuric acid
3. Indicator – Self indicator (KMnO4)
4. End Point – Appearance of permanent pale pink colour.
5.

PROCEDURE

1. Rinse the burette with the potassium permanganate solution and fill the burette with potassium
permanganate solution.
2. Fix the burette in the burette stand and place the white tile below the burette in order to find the
end point correctly.
3. Pipette out 10ml of standard mohr salt solution in a conical flask.
4. Add a test tube full of sulphuric acid in order to prevent oxidation of manganese to form
manganese dioxide.
5. Note down the initial reading in the burette before starting the titration.

Observation

CALCULAITON
M kmno4 = 2 x M mohr x V mohr
10 x VKmno4

MKmno4 = 2 x 0.025 x 10 MKmno4 = 0.02 M

10 x 2.5 ml
Strength = Molarity x Molar mass = 0.02 x 392 = 7.8 gm / liter

Results
1. The molarity of KMnO4 is 0.02 M
2. The Strength of KMnO4 is 7.8 gm / l
