Let us read a poem and let us find out

mother.

Who Loves Mother Best?

“Oh happy birthday, Mama dear.”

Sang Ben, Liz and Bess with cheer
“We love you much, we love you true.”
They kissed their mother, hugged her too.

Then quickly Ben skipped out to play

And went with playmates all the day.
Then rushed home in time to see
His sister Liz aglow with glee.

For Liz held up an ice cream cone,

Enjoying it, she sat alone.
Ben grabbed the cone, and slipped away,
So Liz cried out, “For that you’ll pay!”

Like cats and dogs the two did struggle

Each making sure to win the battle.
They tried to push and then to pull,

BACHELOR OF SECONDARY EDUCATION – THIRD YEAR, BLOCK A

“What do you see on the picture?” “A girl is eating a cone of ice

cream.”
“What happened to Liz when she was
eating “Liz was happy (aglow with
a cone of ice cream?” glee)”

Liz was aglow with glee, answers what

happens to Liz when she eats a cone of ice
cream. This is called the effect.

Look again at the picture,

“What do you notice on Liz’s face?”
“Liz was happy (aglow with
“Why was Liz aglow with glee?” glee)”

Because she was eating a cone of ice “Because she was eating a cone of ice
cream, answers why Liz was aglow with cream.”
glee. This is called the cause.

And that’s what we call the Cause-and-

effect relationship.

Generalization
“A cause and effect relationship describes
something that happens and why it
happens.”

“What happens is called the effect; and why

it happens is called the cause.”

“The cause is usually introduced by the

connective because.”

There lived a very strong giant named
Ang-ngalo. He was very, very tall. When
he went fishing in the sea, the water was
only up his knees. When he walked along
the mountains, the highest mountain stood
no higher than his ankles.
One day, the people in the village did
not have salt anymore. The waves were
very big and strong. They could not go out
into the sea riding on their small boats.
Then they remembered Ang-ngalo. “Why
don’t we ask Ang-ngalo to put his leg
across the ocean? Then we don’t have to
ride in our small boats,” said an old man.
“Yes, indeed,” agreed the others.
“Let’s go and ask Ang-ngalo to help us.”
So the people went to see the giant.
“Allow us to cross the sea over your long
legs,” they said.
Ang-ngalo was a kind giant and was
willing to help the people. So he sat down
and placed one of his legs across the sea.
“Cross over now my friends,” he said.
“Please be careful not to move your
leg while we are crossing,” the men said to
Ang-ngalo.
So the men with their empty sacks
crossed on Ang-ngalo’s leg to the other
side of the sea.
It happened that what Ang-ngalo
threw his leg across the sea, his heel landed
on a hill of red ants. When he saw some
ants, he trembled with fear and became
very pale. This time he closed his eyes and
waited until the last man had reached the
other shore. Then he placed his leg in the
sea to get rid of the red ants.
The men had their sacks filled with
salt. “Put back your leg now, Ang-galo. We
are ready to go home!” they shouted.
Ang-ngalo remembered the red ants.
He did not want to stretch out his leg
anymore.

“Please, Ang-ngalo,” pleaded the
women. “We need salt for our food. We
need salt for the fish and the meat that we
will dry. If we don’t have salt, all our food
will get spoiled. We cannot fetch our men
in our small boats. We are afraid to cross
the rough sea.”
Ang-ngalo felt ashamed when he
heard these words. So he stretched his leg
across the sea once again.
“Hurry,” shouted Ang-ngalo to the
men. “The red ants might come and crawl
on my legs again.”
“Yes,” answered the men. But they
talked and laughed as they walked along
the giant’s leg.
“Hurry, Hurry!” shouted Ang-ngalo
again. “The ants are crawling on my legs
now.”
“Such a big man and yet he is afraid
of the ants,” laughed the men. They walked
slowly as before.
“Hurry! Hurry!” shouted Ang-ngalo.
“The ants are biting me now.”
But the men did not listen to him.
They walked slowly, telling Ang-ngalo not
to mind the ants.
Ang-ngalo’s legs were full of red
ants. The ants bites were very painful. He
bent his leg and dipped it into the water.
The man fell into the sea with their
bags of salt. Ang-ngalo helped the men out
of the water and saved their lives. But the
salt had dissolved in the water.
That is why the sea is salty.
