EE 311 Power Electronics and Lab
Assignment (quiz 3 equivalent)

Instructions:
 Solve all the questions, except starred ones. Submit a neatly handwritten assignment
submission, prepared on A4 sheets utilising both sides.
 Starred ones can be part of the end-sem, but need not be submitted as part of
assignment.
 Write and draw neatly. Overwritten answers will not be considered for evaluation.
 Write all the relevant steps with adequate explanation for complete credit.
 Make suitable assumption(s) wherever necessary. State them explicitly and justify them.

1. A rectifier is operating from an input ac voltage source of triangular waveform

of peak voltage 100 V and frequency 1250 Hz as shown in Figure 3(a). The
rectifier output has an LC filter followed by a load as shown in Figure 3(b). The
diodes may be considered ideal. The inductor is large enough such that the
inductor current may be considered continuous and ripple-free. Voltage ripple
at the output voltage 𝒗𝑶 of the rectifier is negligible. Given that 𝑹 = 𝟓𝛀.

a. Compute the average output voltage.
b. Estimate the peak-to-peak current ripple in the inductor if L=10mH.
Assume that the output capacitor is large enough such that load voltage
is ripple free.

c. For the chosen value of inductor as above, compute the peak-to-peak
ripple in the capacitor voltage, if the C was not so large and (i) C=1000µF
(ii) C=10000 µF
2. For the 3-phase circuit in Figure 2, Given 𝑣𝐴 = 𝑣𝐵 = 𝑣𝐶 = 𝑣𝑆 (𝑖𝑛 𝑟𝑚𝑠), sketch the
(i) output voltage 𝑣𝑂 and (ii) current through the diode DA, if 𝑣𝑆 =
25𝑉(𝑟𝑚𝑠) 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐸 = 24𝑉. Given R=10Ω.

3. A single-phase, 4 thyristor, controlled rectifier is supplying to a series RL load,

with a large inductor value such that the load current is essentially ripple-free.
The rectifier is supplied from a 230V, 50Hz 1-phase supply. The power delivered
in the load is 4kW for a resistor value R= 1Ω for the RL load and for some firing
angle 𝜶.
a. Find the value of 𝜶.
b. Sketch the output voltage waveform, output current waveform, input
current waveform and the top thyristor current waveforms synchronized
to the input voltage waveform.
c. Determine the rms current conduction rating and peak voltage blocking
capability of the thyristors.
d. Compute the RMS value of the fundamental component of the quasi-
squarewave current IS1(rms).
e. Compute the RMS value of the quasi-squarewave current IS(rms).
f. Compute the magnitude of the 3rd harmonic component in the current
waveform using Fourier analysis.

g. Compare and comment on the harmonic performance of single phase
diode rectifier and 3-phase diode rectifier with heavily inductive RL load.
4. A single phase H- bridge inverter has a DC link voltage of 300V.
a. Compute the range of fundamental voltage (RMS) it can generate when
operated using phase shift voltage cancellation method for fundamental.
b. Compute the range of fundamental voltage (RMS) it can generate when
operated using Sine PWM in linear range.
c. Explain (i) unipolar and (ii) Bipolar PWM implementation strategies for Sine
PWM technique. Compare the performance of the two.
5. Figure 3 shows a three phase square wave inverter feeding an AC motor with
isolated neutral.
a. Sketch neatly the voltages VaN, VbN, VcN, VNn, Vab and Van and indicate the
salient features of the waveforms in terms of Vdc and ωt. (Waveforms
should have the same origin and the relative positions should be
indicated. Draw separate axes for each waveform.)
b. If the motor is to be operated at the rated line-line voltage of 400V and
rated frequency of 50Hz, what must the value of the dc link voltage for
the square-wave inverter? [Hint: Useful power delivered to the motor is
due to the fundamental components of voltage and current.]
c. List all the space vector combinations for the inverter while operating in
square wave mode (Indicate them on the hexagonal structure formed).
