TO RETIRE EARLY

A career as a teacher is considered a good

(noble) profession as their main (primary)
responsibility is to give (impart) knowledge to the
children of our country. However, there is an issue
where teachers choose to retire early instead of
working until the retirement age set by the Malaysian
government. According to the Jabatan
Perkhidmatan Awam Malaysia (2022), the
mandatory retirement age for public sector
employees is 60 years, effective from 1 January
2012. Besides that, Kesatuan Perkhidmatan
APPENDIX 1

Perguruan Kebangsaan Semenanjung Malaysia

(NUTP) has reported that over 10,000 teachers
submit applications for early retirement each year,
with numbers increasing every year (annually). The
question is, why can such an issue exist in our
country?

Excessive workload in the education system

is one of the main reasons many teachers choose to
retire early. Apart from teaching, teachers are often
burdened with additional responsibilities that are
beyond their job scope. For instance, they have to
manage clerical work, student attendance
records, sports, clubs and uniformed units
(Sinar Harian, 2023). Moreover, teachers often
have to complete these tasks at home,
disrupting family time. According to Berita
Harian (2023), This pressure and exhaustion
may be why teachers choose to retire early and
find (seek) a more balanced lifestyle. This
situation caused the government to find new
substitute teachers as soon as possible to prevent
this issue from continuing and disrupting the national
education system.

Next, many teachers retire early because

they struggle to keep up with technological
advancements. According to Berita Harian
(2023), teachers who lack IT skills may feel left
behind and unable to adapt to such changes.
Furthermore, due to the COVID-19 pandemic,
students are required to study from home as all
school (educational institutions) throughout
Malaysia are closed, making IT skills more important

(crucial) than ever. The teachers need to use

applications such as Google Meet, Zoom, and
Google Classroom to teach and assign schoolwork
to students. Due to the current situation, many
experienced educators have left. However, this
situation has give (opened up) opportunities for new
teachers to serve.

The question is, how to deal with this issue

from continuing to happen? The government has
taken quick action by speeding up the recruitment
process (expediting the recruitment) of new
teachers through a one-off special recruitment
process. The one-off recruitment process means
special recruitment made only once but with a
large number of recruitments (EduBestari,
2021). This recruitment can prevent (overcome) the
teacher shortage and provide an excellent
opportunity for non-education degree holders to
become teachers. The government can improve
(enhance) the education system by assigning other
positions to manage tasks related to clerical work.
This way, the teachers can fully concentrate on
teaching in the classroom and dedicate their time
and efforts to improving the quality of education.

In conclusion, the issue of teachers retiring

early has become a significant concern in education
and is likely to continued (persist). The government
has a important (significant) role in identifying the
best possible solution for this problem, which may
lead to significant issues if left unaddressed.
Teachers in Malaysia also need to realise that
teaching is a challenging profession that requires

incredible patience and hard work (dedication) to be

a great teacher.
