CHAPTER – 6 (ELECTROMAGNETIC INDUCTION)

1. Predict the polarity of the capacitor in the situation described below

2. Two identical loops, one of copper and another of aluminium are rotated with the same speed in the
same magnetic field. In which case (i) the induced emf (ii) the induced current will be more and why?
3. The magnetic flux through a coil perpendicular to the plane is varying according to the relation
𝜙 = 5𝑡 3 + 4𝑡 2 + 2𝑡 − 5 𝑊𝑏. Calculate the induced current through the coil at t = 2s, if the resistance
of the coil is 5Ω.
4. What are the eddy currents? Write their two advantages and disadvantages.
5. (i) State Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction. (ii) A jet plane is travelling towards west at a
speed of 1800 km/h. What is the voltage difference developed between the ends of the wing having a
span of 25 m, if the earth’s magnetic field at the location has magnitude of 5 × 10 – 4 𝑇 and the dip angle
of 300?
6. Define mutual inductance between a pair of coils. Derive an expression for the mutual inductance of two
long coaxial solenoids of same length wound one over the other.
7. Define self-inductance of a coil. Obtain the expression for the energy stored in an inductor L connected
across a source of emf.
8. (i) Draw a labelled diagram of an ac generator. Obtain the expression for the emf induced in the rotating
coil of N turns each of cross-sectional area A, in the presence of a magnetic field .
(ii) A horizontal conducting rod 10 m long extending from east to west is falling with a speed 5.0 m/s at
right angles to the horizontal component of the Earth’s magnetic field , 0.3 × 10 – 4 𝑊𝑏 𝑚 – 2 . Find the
instantaneous value of the emf induced in the rod.
9. (i) Explain the meaning of the term mutual inductance. Consider two concentric circular coils, one of the
radius r1 and the other r2 (r1 < r2) placed coaxially with centres coinciding with each other. Obtain the
expression for the mutual inductance of the arrangement.
(ii) A rectangular coil of area A, having number of turns N is rotated at f revolutions per second in a
uniform magnetic field B, the field being perpendicular to the coil. Prove that the maximum emf induced
in the coil is 2πfNBA.
10. How does the mutual – inductance of a pair of coils change when:
(i) The distance between the coils is increased?
(ii) The number of turns in each coil is decreased?
(iii) A thin iron sheet is placed between the two coils other factors remaining the same?
Justify your answer in each case.
